But the headline for most people is going to be the fact that Apple finally put a touchscreen on a Mac.

But the thing is, the touchscreen is probably the least impressive aspect of the new MacBook Pro with PROLED XDR Display from a technology standpoint. The real innovation here is Apple’s implementation of a tandem OLED display in its new top-of-the-line laptops.

PROLED XDR Brings Tandem OLED to MacBook Pro

Instead of relying on a traditional backlight, the new PROLED XDR display uses a tandem OLED architecture similar to what Apple first introduced on the M4 iPad Pro models in 2024. This tandem OLED architecture uses two self-illuminating pixel layers, producing deep blacks, bright highlights, and precise per-pixel color control without the blooming associated with backlit display technologies.

Apple says the new display is capable of up to 2,000 nits of peak brightness for both HDR and SDR, an extraordinary 10,000,000:1 contrast ratio, and adaptive ProMotion refresh rates from 10Hz to 120Hz. Plus, the display covers both P3 and Adobe RGB color spaces and, according to Apple, more than 80 percent of Rec. 2020. In short, this gives photographers, colorists, and other video professionals a true-reference grade display on the go.

Each panel requires a precise manufacturing process and undergoes precision factory calibration, Apple says. Apple also developed a new display engine that actively manages pixel luminance and color while compensating for factors such as panel usage and temperature. But Apple is also positioning Touch as a creative tool. Designers can work directly on a canvas, musicians can play software instruments onscreen, and developers can now test touch interactions in their iPhone and iPad apps directly on the screen of their MacBook Pro.

When it comes to third-party support, Apple says macOS can translate touches into clicks in many existing apps, while developers can build more tailored experiences using updated gesture APIs. Adobe Lightroom, DaVinci Resolve, Blender, Cinema 4D, Shapr3D, and other professional applications are among the software that Apple says will soon have bespoke support for touch workflows. Of course, Apple’s own Creator Studio apps are gaining specific interactions sooner: Final Cut Pro users can mark ranges and position clips by touch; Pixelmator Pro users can draw and select on their canvas; and Logic Pro users can play a Multi-Touch keyboard and onscreen pads.

Glowing Apple Logo Returns

<figure class="wp-block-image
