Rating: 4/5 It's a short converter cable January 12, 2015 It was a while ago that I purchased this so I believe I'm right in saying that this was an add-on item, offered as I was checking out. I opted for it for at the time I was interested in these converters, FireWire 400 to 800 since my MacBook Pro had an FW800 port and all my external drives were FW400. I added it to my order without giving much thought to the dimensions. In case you haven't thought about it, 12" is not long for a cable between your computer and peripheral. I've used it primarily as a connector for a Time Machine backup drive with my MacBook Pro. It would awkward to say the least to use this with a desktop. The cable is not made for that, it's made to connect an external device that will sit close to your computer on a desk. It does what it does well and transfer speeds have been the same as they have with other more expensive cables of this sort I've used.

As of this writing, I've placed a second hard drive into my MBP and use it as an always connected backup. I've passed this cable on to a friend with her first Mac (13" MacBook Pro) which she uses at a desk where her external backup sits next to her computer. It works well

Rating: 4/5 Stiff but Durable July 16, 2014 Cables such as this have become important to me as Apple has made current Macs with Firewire 800 connectors yet my old peripherals (drives, etc) still have 400 ports. This one is durable, shielded and a good length. However, due to it's thickness it is not that flexible. This means, coming off of a port, this cable makes a wide loop as one bends it around desk and chair to peripheral. Stiff, it'll resist damage but some of its usefulness is taken away when it's just impossible to maneuver it behind a desk or simply to a device sitting next to your laptop or CPU. Worse, as bad as it sticks out of a (particularly front) port damage could come to the port from snagging or knocking the excess cable. In other words, this cable is best if it's to be installed between a computer and a peripheral that isn't going to be moved much from a back port of a desktop.

Otherwise, this is a typical cable with typical usefulness when used as an adapter piece.

Rating: 5/5 If you have a MacBook Pro, you need this January 11, 2013 I always have used Apple computers. But they sometimes make BAD decisions. One of the worst is removing FW400 to leave place to that stupid FW800 port that causes problems to a lot of people. To be forgotten, they should include this FW800/FW400 adapter with every machine they sell !

Lucky there is OWC.
