Accessing multiple drives couldn't be simpler as Voyager's unique design makes hot-swapping drives a breeze. Just insert any standard 2.5" or 3.5" SATA drive with up to 6.0TB capacity into the Voyager, and connect it to your Mac or PC via USB 3.0 or USB 2.0. There's nothing else to install or configure!

When you're finished using a drive, a simple press of the eject button lifts the drive off the SATA connector, allowing the drive to be easily removed.

Note: These Voyager docks are designed to spin down the hard drive and sleep after 15 minutes of inactivity, even if "Put drives to sleep when possible" is disabled in System Preferences. This is a power-saving and heat management feature.

Rating: 4/5 Overall very good. March 14, 2016 I have used an earlier model for weekly backups and archiving files for the past 3-4 years and never had any problems, nor with this one in the 3 months of use. The older model has a 2 TB drive limitation but I have used this one with 4 TB hard drives.

It would be nice if there was a flap or separate cover which would entirely block the drive opening instead of just reducing it to a 2.5" drive outline. I live in a very dusty house and the opening just invites dust and lint settling on the drive connectors. I guess I can use an inelegant plastic bag when the drive is not in use.

The power adapter as I have it now is plugged directly into a powerstrip and with my strip covers a total of 4 outlets! It looks like one should be able to remove the plug and perhaps use a cord instead but I just looked at my box and do not see or recall seeing a separate cord. I tried to remove the plug and it is in there so tightly or the release button just is not working I was worried about breaking it just to see what kind of cord it would take.

The older design which sat with the shorter side towards the user fit better on my shelf.

I like the addition of power button but is is at the back of the unit and fiddly to reach instead of on the top front as part of the operation light display (it just looks like a button). My information may be out of date but even with a power button of this kind the adapter may still draw power when the unit is turned off so I like to keep mine plugged into a powerstrip I can turn off completely. If the adapter were inside the unit the power button could really fill a purpose and it would reduce clutter.

Data throughput for large files is 160+MBytes/sec. Sometimes I will see close to 200MBytes/sec. Much better than the USB 2/Firewire 800 docking station I was using.

Rating: 5/5 This is a great tool for backups! April 25, 2015 I recently purchased a NewerTech Voyager S3 SATA disk dock from OWC for use with my Mac Mini. So what is the Voyager S3? It is a stand into which 3.5" or 2.5" SATA disk drives up to 6 TB in size can be 'plugged in'. The Voyager S3 has it's own external power source and attaches to your computer via a USB (USB 3.0, backwards compatible with 2.0) connection.

The stand has a power and activity light on the front, and a power button on the rear. An eject button on the top of the unit assists in removing drives. With the industry standard USB connection the unit is compatible with OS X, Linux and Windows systems.

Operation is simple. When I received the unit I connected it by USB cable to my Mac Mini, then attached the included power adapter. I dropped in an 80GB SATA drive and turned the unit on. My Mac saw the drive and let me know that it was not formatted. I formatted the drive using Disk Utility and the drive was automatically mounted upon completion of formatting.

I currently have three SATA drives that I have formatted and can attach any of them in minutes for data archiving and retrieval. This is a low cost method of augmenting your system storage while keeping your costs low. I have wanted one of these for a few years and now that I have it, I see that it will become an integral part of my system operation.
