  • Nylon Pry Tool (aka "Spudger")
Yes, You Can Do-it-Yourself
OWC is committed to your success, so if you need a bit more guidance, we are available Mon-Fri 8AM-8PM and Sat 9AM-4PM with U.S. based technical support by phone or live chat.

NOTE: A small number of 2012 units were shipped with the drive mounted in the upper drive bay rather than the more typical lower bay shown in this video. If you have a 2012 or later model, you will want to determine the configuration of your Mac mini's drives prior to ordering. To do this, open Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility.app and click on the grey drive icon at the left-edge of the window. If you see "Lower" after the "Connection ID" at the bottom-left corner of the window, you may proceed using the standard installation instructions. If you see "Upper" then you have a special configuration which will need additional components, and you will need to also refer to the Addendum video.
OWC NOTE:
While OWC encourages the DIY philosophy, this is a challenging install that requires advanced skills. If, after watching the how-to video, you are not fully confident of your ability to perform the installation, you can choose to have OWC "Do It For You" via our Apple Mac mini Installation Service.

Rating: 5/5 challenging install in 2012 mac mini January 31, 2018 I purchased this drive and the data doubler kit to upgrade my 2012 mac mini. am using this drive as an internal backup to the 1 TB SSD that I inserted. put the old spinning HDD in an external case as a way to hold on to current configuration until I am sure the new setup works perfectly. followed the instructions in the online video. compared these instructions to the same ones from ifixit.com.

much preferred this style of presentation and especially appreciated the re assemble pathway after the drive installation. I hate it when i get the instruction to just do all the previous steps in the reverse order. having said that, this upgrade did take two hours for my first attempt inside a mini.

Rating: 5/5 Great replacement! May 29, 2017 Recently my Mac mini 2012 Fusion Drive failed, and I was a little tight on funds for spending, so the Apple Store repair price was out of the question. A friend, who was a former Genius Bar Technician suggested This drive, and I glad he did. Easy to install and works swimmingly!

Rating: 5/5 Great For Rejuvenating A Mac Mini May 16, 2016 My good old dependable 2011 Mac Mini had slowed down to a crawl when booting. I bought and installed the fusion drive with the provided tools and documentation. Now the Mac Mini is working great again, faster than ever! I kept the old drive inside the Mac Mini and use it for both backups and OS X beta testing. Happiness achieved.

Rating: 5/5 Excellent product April 19, 2016 The data doubler kit fit perfectly, the instructions were very clear and the tools included in the version I bought were good enough to do several installations. Too early to know if the heat from two HD's in one enclosure will shorten the drives' lifespan but Apple did sell a version of the Mac Mini Server with two drives so am hopeful that it won't be an issue.

Rating: 5/5 great value December 30, 2015 I was going to buy the drive and the kit, but this had a better value. the Mac mini is harder than you think to take apart. I have built many many computers over the years and the mini has literally no extra wiggle room. I was only able to get one of 2 screws back in that hold the wireless antenna. the second hold is off by a few hairs and will not go back in. Everything works well, and the instructions are very clear. probably took me an hour in total to install the drive. I would not attempt if your not comfortable working with computer boards, as the plugs feel very fragile.

Rating: 5/5 Bloody excellent June 1, 2014 I ordered this and it shipped a couple of days later. Worked perfectly with my mac - despite the local mac store telling me that my model mac mini doesn't support multiple drives. It took about an hour of concentrated work to install the additional drive and I loved it came with a free "bluetooth shield for better reception".

Next evening I did a drive clone from the old 500GB drive to this one. It's working like a dream and my mac seems much faster. Some minor issues that a couple of pieces of software wanting me to enter their license keys again (bloody MS office!) but the hardware is working perfectly.
