DIY Bundle: OWC Data Doubler Kit + 500GB OWC 3G SSD
OWC 2009-2011 iMac Data Doubler Kit, 500GB 2.5" OWC Mercury Electra 3G Solid State Drive and tools

OWC Internal SSD DIY Kit
Everything you need in one package to replace your 2009-2011 iMac internal optical drive with 500GB of OWC SSD power and reliability.
Configuration flexibility is yours when you replace your iMac's internal SuperDrive with the OWC Data Doubler. Bundle includes bracket, screws, OWC Microfiber cloth, suctions cups, tools and a Quick Start Guide for a complete all in one solution.

Then, just install the entire assembly into an iMac's 5.25" optical drive bay. OWC Data Doubler makes it easy to custom design how you want your internal storage to perform. Installed drives are recognized like any other high speed SATA storage device and can be setup and partitioned using the Apple Disk Utility Program.
Just a few of the configuration options you can enjoy with Data Doubler:
  • Combining a new drive with the existing internal drive for one larger volume (SPAN).
  • Combining a new matching drive with existing internal for high-performance RAID-0 Stripe volume.
  • Configuring a new drive as a Time Machine backup drive.
  • Formatting one drive for the Mac OS and the other dedicated for Windows.

You don't have to give up your optical drive completely if you don't want to. You can reuse the original SuperDrive with the OWC Value Line Slim optical drive enclosure for Apple SuperDrive.

*Professional installation of Data Doubler into an iMac is highly recommended due to degree of installation difficulty. OWC assumes no responsibility for damage that may occur during the install.

Release Candidate (RC) firmware set

There are two kinds of firmware for SSDs Mass Production (MP) and Release Candidate (RC). Prior to an MP firmware release, there are beta firmware releases and an RC firmware release. Often, the RC is the same as the MP release, however there can be small changes and bug fixes made between the two. OWC has evaluated the RC for the 6Gb/s SandForce 2281 Processor and found it to be stable with no issues reported during our testing. However, as with any evolutionary product, issues may surface as different usages and configurations are employed and it is important to understand that there will be further updates and revisions.

Since no firmware update is currently offered for the OWC Mercury EXTREME Pro 6G SSD, no update page exists. To see the typical steps involved with a self performed field firmware update, please visit our 3Gb/s product update page at: http://eshop.macsales.com/Customized_Pages/Framework.cfm?page=sf_firmware.html

It is important to note that the current firmware update tool requires the use of Windows XP/Vista/7. OWC is currently working on a Mac OS based update tool, but we do not have an exact availability date.

  1. 1GB = 1,000,000,000 bytes. Total accessible capacity varies depending upon operating environment (typically 5-10% less). The actual total capacity will depend on your own defined file settings/preferences.
  2. Temperature reporting is currently an unsupported feature because due to the operating characteristics of SSDs, it is highly unlikely one would ever exceed an OWC Mercury SSD's stated operating temperature ceiling of 158F/70C. However, we are looking into supporting this feature in the future via a firmware update. Firmware updates can be found here: http://eshop.macsales.com/tech_center/OWC/SSD.

Rating: 5/5 Great upgrade for 2009 iMac February 19, 2015 I purchased the Data Doubler/3G SSD upgrade for my Mid-2009 iMac. Installation was straightforward, helped of course by the excellent OWC videos. A noticeable performance upgrade, as one would expect. All went well, and I am enjoying an upgrade which will buy me some time before a new computer purchase. Highly recommended!!

Rating: 5/5 Super fast SSD for my once tired iMac February 8, 2015 My late 2009 iMac was starting to slow with all the newer applications (Lightroom, PS, etc.). I upgraded the 1TB HHD to 4 TB, and removed my broken optical drive and replaced with this SSD. My applications and OS now fun on the SDD, document files are kept on the HDD. This is the best of both worlds - fast access to apps via the SDD, reliable & low cost file storage on the HDD.

Rating: 5/5 Awesome Product! January 15, 2015 This kit had everything you'd need for a super efficient SSD upgrade. I found it easy to install as long as you're patient and don't force anything too hard. I recommend a static free environment just in case but I didn't have one. When transfering your old OSX drive to the SSD just use the restore tab in the disk utility application, it worked perfectly with my iMac 10,1. Don't forget to backup everything just in case!!! Customer service is great too! OWC is the best!

Rating: 5/5 Like a new computer for $350! September 25, 2014 Just when I was about to give up my aging mid-2009 iMac for a newer machine, a friend convinced me to buy the OWC DIY Data Doubler Kit. Installation was fairly simple for anyone who's halfway handy, due to the provided instructions and video. The included toolkit was also a godsend. My computer now boots in a fraction of the time, and apps open almost instantly. The SuperDrive that I removed to make room for the SSD drive went into a $30 OWC external case. The results were so good I ordered another Data Doubler kit for my wife's iMac.
