Release Candidate (RC) firmware set

There are two kinds of firmware for SSDs Mass Production (MP) and Release Candidate (RC). Prior to an MP firmware release, there are beta firmware releases and an RC firmware release. Often, the RC is the same as the MP release, however there can be small changes and bug fixes made between the two. OWC has evaluated the RC for the 6Gb/s SandForce 2281 Processor and found it to be stable with no issues reported during our testing. However, as with any evolutionary product, issues may surface as different usages and configurations are employed and it is important to understand that there will be further updates and revisions.

Since no firmware update is currently offered for the OWC Mercury EXTREME Pro 6G SSD, no update page exists. To see the typical steps involved with a self performed field firmware update, please visit our 3Gb/s product update page at:

It is important to note that the current firmware update tool requires the use of Windows XP/Vista/7. OWC is currently working on a Mac OS based update tool, but we do not have an exact availability date.

  1. 1GB = 1,000,000,000 bytes. Total accessible capacity varies depending upon operating environment (typically 5-10% less). The actual total capacity will depend on your own defined file settings/preferences.
  2. In terms of standard gigabytes, 1GiB ≈ 1.074GB and refers to the actual formatted capacity of shown under Mac OS 10.5 or earlier and Microsoft Windows OS.
  3. Specific application environments such as temperature and duty cycle will affect the overall reliability.
  4. Specifications provided by SandForce.
  5. Temperature reporting is currently an unsupported feature because due to the operating characteristics of SSDs, it is highly unlikely one would ever exceed an OWC Mercury SSD's stated operating temperature ceiling of 158F/70C. However, we are looking into supporting this feature in the future via a firmware update. Firmware updates can be found here:

Rating: 5/5 Works perfectly November 17, 2016 I have a 2011 iMac that was running very slowly but I didn't want to upgrade to a new computer. After doing some research, I read online that swapping the HD for an SSD would dramatically increase the speed of my 5 year old iMac. Because I was nervous about taking apart my Mac, read several reviews about OWC as well as watched the videos before I made my purchase. I did contact customer service several times before and during the installation process and they were extremely responsive and helpful.

The kit arrived fairly quickly and was very well packaged. Using the videos provided by OWC, I was able to take apart the iMac, install the SDD in place of my optical drive, and reassemble the iMac in under 30-40 minutes. Not only was the process very straight forward, but the new drive booted up just fine.

I am happy to say that I feel like I have a new computer. It less than an afternoon I was able to install the SSD, complete a clean macOS install on the SSD, transfer over my data using Migration Assistant, and reformat my old HD as a secondary drive for my static files.

I would recommend this item to a friend! Customer Videos:

Rating: 5/5 wow it's like i have a brand new mac November 11, 2016 My beloved iMac27 was driving me crazy with constant disk drive crunching and endless rebooting time and always i could here some disk activity. OK i have 1T of data and drive in 90% full. so i dropped most of the stuff on the cloud to make more room... till same issue. I was starting to think i might need to fresh install - but that's several years of tweaks and app installed and didn't really want to go that route. I finally decided to try this SDD drive solution. At first i was going to replace my HDD with an SSD but after doing a LIVE CHAT with the friendly staff at MacSales i realized i had several options, add an SSD under the optical (more complicated) or replace the optical (i never used) by an SDD super easy install. I picked that option and when my drive arrived, i have it installed in 30min following the great videos provided my OWC. I did a restore from TimeMachine -- that took all night !!! and at 5AM i woke up but the chime MACOS does when it startup !!! I was exactly where i left off MINUS the HDD noises. OMG i did a few reboots -- so fast i can't believe it!! It's like a have a brand new mac - so quiet - so cool (oh ya get a can of air to dust it while you're in there) i'm sure that helped with the coolness now ;) Anyways this 1T SSD drive/ optical conversion cost me CAN$601 Tax, Shipping AND Duty included and it's the best investment i've done since buying my mac. THANKS for great product, support and service OWC / MacSales :) STOP THINKING ABOUT IT... DO IT!!!!
