If you are not fully confident of your ability to add an SSD to your 2010 27-inch iMac, you can choose to have OWC "Do It For You" via our Turnkey Upgrade Installation Program.

Please note, that before attempting to perform this installation, it is recommended you watch the associated instructional video in its entirety to determine your ability to perform this complex procedure. OWC assumes no responsibility for damage that may occur during the install.

Release Candidate (RC) firmware set

There are two kinds of firmware for SSDs Mass Production (MP) and Release Candidate (RC). Prior to an MP firmware release, there are beta firmware releases and an RC firmware release. Often, the RC is the same as the MP release, however there can be small changes and bug fixes made between the two. OWC has evaluated the RC for the 6Gb/s SandForce 2281 Processor and found it to be stable with no issues reported during our testing. However, as with any evolutionary product, issues may surface as different usages and configurations are employed and it is important to understand that there will be further updates and revisions.

Since no firmware update is currently offered for the OWC Mercury EXTREME Pro 6G SSD, no update page exists. To see the typical steps involved with a self performed field firmware update, please visit our 3Gb/s product update page at: http://eshop.macsales.com/Customized_Pages/Framework.cfm?page=sf_firmware.html

It is important to note that the current firmware update tool requires the use of Windows XP/Vista/7. OWC is currently working on a Mac OS based update tool, but we do not have an exact availability date.

  1. 1GB = 1,000,000,000 bytes. Total accessible capacity varies depending upon operating environment (typically 5-10% less). The actual total capacity will depend on your own defined file settings/preferences.
  2. In terms of standard gigabytes, 1GiB ≈ 1.074GB and refers to the actual formatted capacity of shown under Mac OS 10.5 or earlier and Microsoft Windows OS.
  3. Specific application environments such as temperature and duty cycle will affect the overall reliability.
  4. Specifications provided by SandForce.
  5. Temperature reporting is currently an unsupported feature because due to the operating characteristics of SSDs, it is highly unlikely one would ever exceed an OWC Mercury SSD's stated operating temperature ceiling of 158F/70C. However, we are looking into supporting this feature in the future via a firmware update. Firmware updates can be found here: http://eshop.macsales.com/tech_center/OWC/SSD.

Rating: 5/5 It is too easy April 23, 2018 Called up OWC and told them I had the original 2010 27" iMac and I need a 500GB SSD, mounting kit, and thermal heat detector and they said Okay. When it arrived all of the above plus some small screwdrivers and suction cups to pull the screen off were all in one neat little box. Then all you need do is surf into https://eshop.macsales.com/installvideos/ and find your particular Mac and watch the apposite video first and maybe concurrently to the upgrade. :-)

Rating: 5/5 Easy install and double drive space October 1, 2017 The overall drive installation was easy,, although it would be a lot easier with someone next to you to pause the video as you go along—or if OWC put in slides saying "pause here" after each step. The only part that was difficult was the cable link where they show you the back of a motherboard, but don't quite show you enough so you can discern the orientation of the cable connector since you have to connect it without being able to see what's going on behind the board. It took less time than the hour the video said. Now I have a computer with an SSD and the older HD that I can now use as mass storage.

Rating: 5/5 Night and day difference April 10, 2017 I feel like I should get a medal for successfully installing this drive. It's incredibly nerve wracking popping out the logic board and getting all the components into place. Also, it is a lot more difficult to plug the drive in than it looks in the video, because the port is on the back of the logic board and unlike in the video, it must stay within the body of the computer, still attached in many places. Anyway, I managed to do it successfully and it works great. I love owc, they make great products!

Rating: 5/5 Great upgrade!! September 6, 2016 This is definitely a tricky job to complete. Getting proper placement of the drive and sufficient routing of cables is no small task. Make sure you have a good set of screwdrivers with magnetic heads for the job. However, it is all very doable in one shot and worked out well. Certainly doesn't hurt to have a friend helping you out as well. The LCD and logic board are not light to manipulate.

Rating: 5/5 Super fast August 28, 2016 I Upgraded both my iMac 27 inch and Mac mini with SSD drive and 16 GB OWC Ram. Also for the iMac I put the 2 TB fusion drive in. The installation was easy , the service and assistance has been fantastic and the end result are 2 computers that are faster than I could have ever dreamed of.

I am now going to upgrade the 21 inch also.

Great service, great product. Thanks
