They allow me to use the Firewire 800 connectivity on my Mac Mini server and, with an adapter, the Thunderbolt connectivity on my wife's iMac. They do get pretty warm (I have them stacked up 3-high using the add-on brackets sold by OWC) but have never had a melt down. Once in a while I have had to use them with the FW400 or USB connectivity and it's nice that all are available.

Rating: 4/5 Nice drive with one flaw January 13, 2015 As with all OWC drives, this one was a breeze to set up. My sole complaint is that, when plugged into a Firewire 800 port, the blue drive light is on continuously REGARDLESS of whether the switch for the drive is on or off. As I'm using the drive with a PowerBook which gets no power when I'm not working (I turn off the switch on the surge suppressor to eliminate power drain), the effect is that the LED in the OWC driuve drains my PowerBook battery. Tech support at OWC assures me that this behavior is a virtue, not a bug, but I can't see how it does anything positive; I've taken to unplugging the Firewire 800 cable when not using the drive. A minor irritant, perhaps, but definitely an irritant.

Response from MacSales.com, Technical Support January 13, 2015 That behavior is part of the FireWire design specifications. When connecting via FireWire, you can daisy-chain drives even if an individual drive has been switched off. That LED indicates that the FireWire bus is powered and available for use. While the power draw for that LED is extremely low, we can’t disagree with you that this FireWire feature is not always a benefit.

Rating: 5/5 Another Great OWC HDD December 25, 2014 This my second Mercury Elite Pro HDD, bought the first one (500 GB) about seven years ago and just got this one (2 TB) this spring. Man, this thing is fast! My incremental backups with SuperDuper just fly now, take about 10 minutes compared to almost 30 minutes with the older Elite (and it was pretty quick!).

I love the form factor/case, quiet operation, bang-for-the-buck and overall quality feel of the device. What can I say? When I need a new hard drive I look to OWC...period.
