  • USB 3.0 (2.0 Backwards compatible)

Recommended configurations supported

  • RAID 0 – Performance Striping (default setting) for maximum performance(requires two identical hard drives).
  • RAID 1 – One drive mirrors the other for an instant backup(requires two identical hard drives).
  • Span – Combines both drives into a single, large volume.
  • Independent – Use both drives separately.*

    * 1) When the enclosure is set to Independent drive mode, only the drive in HDD2 is bootable.
    2) Independent drive mode is not fully supported by some versions of Mac OS X when connected over Thunderbolt. In Mac OS X 10.8.3 and prior, only HDD2 appears. This is a limitation of of the operating systems' support for the SATA chipset in the Mercury Elite Pro Dual. Independent drive mode does not have the limitation when used over USB.

Rating: 5/5 Solid and reliable April 28, 2014 Love this enclosure and the included T-bolt cable. I use it with a 2014 Mac Pro as an edit (FCPX) and archive RAID. Looks great on the desktop too.

Rating: 4/5 Fast, solid TB enclosure April 9, 2014 I use one of these enclosures to house a 3TB 7200RPM SATA hard drive and a 512GB SSD. Its chipset provides a sustained 350MB/sec if your drive is quick enough. It provides native SATA connectivity, so you can do drive-level operations like read SMART data, issue ATA security commands, etc. One downside: both SATA channels are on a single controller, so if you wanted to have a RAID0 stripe of SSDs, you won't see a speed increase (though if you wanted to do a RAID0 stripe of mechanical HDDs, you'll see a definite increase in speed).

Rating: 4/5 Fast, works well, could use a power switch March 13, 2014 I went back-and-forth between this and the USB 3 Mercury Elite Pro Dual-Drive RAID0, which is roughly $200 cheaper. I ended up going with this unit for the following reasons:

1) I already have a lot of devices, including my backup drives, conencted to USB 3. I was concerned that connecting my main storage to it as well would impact performance (as all the USB 3 ports on my model of machine share the same PCIe lane).

2) The cheaper, USB 3 array has a chipset that maxes out at 300mbs (confirmed with OWC's technical folks). Independent reviewers have clocked this array at sustained transfer speeds of 360mbps.

It's a bit surprising that this unit does not have a power switch while OWC's cheaper arrays do. Also, it appears that the fan speed is constant -- for a fairly expensive solution like this, having the fan controlled by a temperature sensor would have been more appropriate.

The thing does scream along, though, so you definitely get the performance out of it. Build quality also seems quite nice. I've only had it a few days, so can't comment on reliability.

Response from MacSales.com, Technical Support March 14, 2014 There is no power switch on the Mercury Elite Pro Dual. As long as the power supply is connected, the Mercury Elite Pro Dual will turn on when it receives a data signal through the interface cable (USB 3.0 or Thunderbolt). If there is no interface cable connected, or if the computer is off or in a sleep or hibernation mode, the Mercury Elite Pro Dual will turn off.

Rating: 4/5 Almost perfect February 27, 2014 I'm extremely impressed with both build quality, and performance of the Mercury Elite Pro. A great RAID for a great price! The only issue I have is the fan that is always on. It's not too loud, but noticeable under my desk. I wish it was spinning down if the drive is not in use, or when the volume(s) are unmounted. And since there's no power switch, I have to manually unplug the Thunderbolt cable from my iMac to silence the fan. Annoying.

Rating: 4/5 Short Cables February 7, 2014 While the site says: "we include high-quality USB 3.0 and Thunderbolt cables," be warned they are barely 2' long. My three previous Mercury drive purchases had 3' long cables so this is a problematic regression unless you can place it right next to your machine.

I know a longer cable would only cost me a few bucks, but that is the point. It seems cheep to short change me on the cables when I just paid top dollar for your powerhouse 8TB thunderbolt drive.

Otherwise the drive is working as expected and I am pleased to have so much extra storage!

Rating: 5/5 Small FAST Online Storage! January 31, 2014 I just got my new Mercury Elite Pro Dual (Thunderbolt) this week and have not had much time with it but I have been very impressed so far by what I have seen. After letting the drive warm up in my office (it was COLD when delivered!) I hooked it up to my Mac Mini i7 via the (included) thunderbolt cable and it was immediately seen as a new drive "OWC HD". I ran the "OWC Drive Guide" app that was in the "Macintosh Setup" folder (do NOT copy this utility to the Applications folder or anywhere else - it must run from the drive). It formatted the drive which was already setup as a RAID 0 array via the switch on the back panel, and the new drive was ready to use. The first thing I did was to run BlackMagic Speed Test which showed 350-360MB/s, over 4 times what I was used to on FW800; reviews show that USB3 performs similarly but I have not tried that yet.

I set the drive up as my primary online storage with 2 backups just in case (I have never used RAID 0 before but if one drive fails you lose everything). I don't expect any problems to arise but it is prudent always to keep your backups current.

Although I am very pleased with the drive I wish that I had not been in quite such a hurry. At the time I was looking the "standard" Mercury Elite Pro RAID (USB, FW) still showed USB2 only, and since my new Mac Mini supported thunderbolt I went with this new drive. Only 2 days after getting my new drive I see that OWC is now showing the regular Mercury Elite Pro RAID as now having been updated to USB3 at a much lower price than this one.

Rating: 4/5 Solid unit but a bit noisy January 30, 2014 I use this with a pair of 3tb 7200rpm drives in raid 0 via thunderbolt with a new Mac Pro (which is completely silent most of the time) and being used to the silence of the Mac Pro and other drives we have this one is kind of noisy, not as bad as other raids we have but noisy still.

Rating: 5/5 Small, fast and quiet, it looks good and works great! January 10, 2014 Installed two WD Black 4TB desktop drives in independent configuration. Powered up the unit and BAM, it was there.

One drive backs up my Synology DS214+ via USB3, the other backs up by MBPs via Thunderbolt. Fast, fast, fast!

Quality enclosure and cables. Too bad can't use both interface ports simultaneously. Would really like to have an ON/OFF switch.

All things considered I like this unit and will buy another.
