Supports the burning of up to 128GB of data or high definition video per Blu-ray disc, or up to 8.5GB using low-cost Dual Layer DVDs. This drive is compatible with single-, dual-, and quad-layer Blu-ray media for up to 128GB of storage on a single optical disc.

M-DISC – Write Once and Read Forever

Compared to other recordable DVDs on the market today, M-DISC offers superior reliability in data storage that provides the permanent optical data storage solution. Once written, the M-DISC can be read or played on any quality DVD drive that supports the common DVD+R/RW format. M-DISC Media sold separately.

Reads and Writes Blu-ray discs

Although commercial Blu-ray movie playback not supported in OS X, Blu-ray discs do mount on the desktop and can be backed up to the computer or played via third party software options.

Drive is Plug & Play natively supported by Apple iLife, Apple iDVD, etc with Mac OS X 10.4.3 and later.
- If you are using Mac OS X 10.4.2, the latest version 10.4.11 is a free update we recommend installing.
- If you are using Mac OS X 10.3.x, you will need PatchBurn for 10.3.x for support.
This drive is not supported under Mac OS 9 or earlier.
Apple software currently does not support Blu-ray drives, but the DVD and CD burning/reading portions of the OS do function.
Burning via FireWire is only supported in OS 10.9 or later.

Rating: 5/5 CD drive in my computer went bad, so replaced it with this external drive March 5, 2016 The CD drive in my macbook pro would take forever and have many errors when trying to rip CD's to my hard drive. This seemed like a great idea, to upgrade to an external drive with the ability to read and write everything from blu-ray to CD's. When I first received the new drive, I hooked it up and tried ripping a couple of CD's to see how it would perform. It worked flawlessly, was very fast and had no errors at all after the CD was ripped. Made me a happy camper for sure! A nice plus is the Toast 14 HD app that came with it :)

April 12, 2015 I've Bought Two Of these Mercury Pro 16X External Burners i use One To Read and The Other to write, thats just my preference my programs allow me to select the read disc and target Disc and saves the wear and tear from having just one unit doing all the work. when using this Burner on a iMac id reccomend going into the System preferences and Deselecting "Put Hard Discs To sleep" so while your in the middle of a Burn/Read or write the system won't try to sleep until your done. also whatever burn program you use, go to your applications folder,select the program, SelectCmd " I " and select "Prevent app Nap. if you don't the app will sleep and will cut off communication with the Burner and the burner will rev up and get stuck spinning at a high rate of speed and get the Unit Hot, these OWC Lg Burners do a great job at burning Blu Ray Discs Cds and DVDs, if you looking for a reliable Burner for the Price this is for you. I've had Two of the burners for about 4 months now and have made many copies of Backups while connected to Firewire800. Go for it. Great product.

All of them had Mix reviews saying they work with a mac and they dont work with a mac. So I made up my mind paid a little more then I wanted but HEY now I can burn Blu-rays and watch Blu-ray Movies on my Mac Pro. Only the down side is I just wish that the USB 3.0 Cable was longer. I have to keep moving the driver so I can reach my USB ports.

Rating: 5/5 Great Product December 27, 2014 I purchased this product due to my internal Superdrive is acting up and very finicky on what discs it likes. Rather than spend a hundred or so to replace it I figured this was a better option as it also burns BluRay at up 50gb. My plan for this unit is to for hard backups of my data. I haven't tried to watch any video with it as all my video is in electronic format that I stream from a central server across my network to all my devices. Connections were easy and right out of the box it has worked great. I am running OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion and it works with no problems whatsoever. I highly recommend this drive to anyone who owns a Mac. With the various port connections there is no shortage of being able to connect this unit to any computer.

Response from MacSales.com, Product Support August 6, 2014 Just to clarify, the unit comes with eSATA, USB 3.0, and FireWire 800 ports for options for connecting the optical drive to your computer depending on which ports you have available. The remaining unused ports do not then in turn become available for other devices.

Rating: 5/5 So very simple to use! June 7, 2014 I purchased this burner bundle because of an article that you wrote on how to burn a Blu-ray disk using iMovie and Toast. First of all the article was spot on! I used this burner and the Toast software to make my first high definition Blu-ray disk movie from some previous footage in iMovie that was shot in 1080/60p. Even though this footage was converted to AIC before I burned it to Blu-ray, the quality was stunning! I played the Blu-ray disk in my Blu-ray player attached to my 70 inch tv and the quality blew me away! I figured if this disk looked awesome on my 70 inch tv, then it would look good on anything. .. I recommend this bundle deal or the Blu-ray recorder. Both are great. Also, I had a question for tech support about Daisy chaining the Blu-ray recorder and an external drive for one of my projects. Tech support was fast, concise, friendly, and very helpful. All in all, I think OWC is the total package! Is too bad they don't have a 10 star rating! Thanks to all.
