Qualified Hard Drives

Serial ATA drive models OWC has tested and qualified for use with the Mercury Rack Pro:

A 'recommended' drive is one that, through our extensive and ongoing evaluation process, we've found to have optimum operational characteristics required for demanding RAID applications.

Note: OWC is always testing new drive models and adds additional models as they become available and have passed our stringent requirements. If you do not see a new drive model listed, please check back in the future for confirmed OWC Mercury Rack Pro Qualification.

Note: Regardless of drive model used, OWC recommends all drives used in RAID configurations match exactly for proper RAID operation.

Rating: 3/5 Looks pretty, NO GOOD for mobile/field use. April 22, 2016 I bought this to use as part of a touring/recording rig for synth/keyboard for a couple of bands I'm in. The nature of my data needs are for full redundancy, high storage and low access times... this does all of that. I have it mounted in a musician's "road case", a mobile flight case with 19" rack rails designed to hold gear like this. What was NOT obvious in the product description is that this unit is COMPLETELY useless for traveling/moving/mobile use. When packing the rack case up, I have to be careful to NEVER lift it so the front door of the unit points down at all, or the door will fly open and all the drives will fall out. There are NO extra latching mechanisms to keep the drives in their bays for any non-level use... they literally just "sit there" in their bays. Like I said, it does a good job if you mount it in a closet and never plan to move it ever, but it's a giant pain and an albatross around my neck now to work with is in a mobile application. This seems to me to be a major design flaw, how are there not latching mechanisms to keep the drives in their bays, REGARDLESS of whether you're ever going to tip the unit? So, after having to collect all my drives out of the inside of the front lid of my road case several times now, this is my major complaint.

My next issue is that there is a power-saving mode that kicks in after a certain amount of time, which powers down the drives and often loses the connection/visibility to the computer completely, depending on the particular software in use. This does NOT play nice with many of my music software applications, as often when samples are loaded into RAM, there is no need to "Read" for a period of time, but when I change patches, the drive connection has been corrupted and the software freaks out. Not good at all live. Here's the kicker... there's no way to turn it off. Yep, confirmed with OWC support personally. It is a "feature" that you get for free even if you don't want it. So now I'm left trying to remember to intentionally ping the hard drive every so often during a live performance to not lose the connection. I have other things to do when playing live, this shouldn't be one of them. It would have taken no time to build in a little DIP switch that enabled/disabled power-save mode, but there you have it.

So, it's a nice unit for VERY particular uses... i.e. mounting in your server closet and never moving it again. RAID 10 works as it should. It was a bad choice for my particular uses, however, and the product description provided ZERO clues as to how this thing was engineered and for what uses. I am now out a significant amount of $$$ for a unit that is more redundant than, but only barely more robust than, a simple USB hard drive. Wait, actually, I can throw those drives into my bag day after day and they hold up just fine without doors opening and drives spilling out. I would not buy this again for this purpose.

Dyllon M was tirelessly patient with me and manage the incident shipping it back and forth to help me fix a drive/RAID problem, but it does little to help me use of it now.

Rating: 5/5 happy as a clam in wet sand!! September 13, 2015 I bought an OWC Mercury Rack Pro and brought it to Europe where I live. I plugged it in and the internal voltage switch did not work. It died. OWC was GREAT! They gave me an RMA # and in a short time I received a replacement. The new one has a voltage switch, which is now set to 230v. The enclosure and 4 pcs of 5 TB HDs are all working GREAT now for a couple of weeks. I am so thrilled. What a fantastic company! Happy! Happy! Thank you OWC!! RECOMMENDATION TO BUYERS: If you live somewhere where the voltage is NOT 110v, make SURE your product has a voltage switch, even it the product has an internal switch. Better safe than sorry!

I would recommend this item to a friend!

Rating: 5/5 I love this thing... April 2, 2015 Works and works well. I love it and use it for a ZFS pool. Have used it with Mac OpenZFS and FreeBSD 9&10.

Note: IF using with esata make sure your card has a multiplier as there isn't one built into this box.

Great quality and transfer rate over USB 2.0/FW800 on Mac and USB3.0 on FreeBSD.

Best Price:Quality ratio out there. There is really no competition for this unless you want to pay 3x as much. ... Will be buying another soon.

I would recommend this item to a friend!
