Rating: 5/5 Excellent and affordable Raid 5 Storage March 20, 2013 We are using one of these units connected to a MacPro with an OWC miniSAS PCIe card and it has been rock solid from day one. In fact, we are getting ready to add a second one.

It took us about a day to set it up and get it configured, but after that it has been easy to use and maintain. We currently have it configured in Raid 5 and it's hosted on our iSCSI SAN. Multiple edit suites access this storage and our SAN server and this drive array runs without any problems.

If you have not worked with miniSAS do your homework ahead of time to avoid disappointment. It would be great to see this style raid from OWC with Thunderbolt.

Rating: 4/5 Big, fast and quite. November 6, 2012 The Mercury Rack Pro mini-SAS is a 16TB hard drive in a single rack space. Unfortunately, there is no RAID associated with this product.There is a PCIe card that's required for SAS operation which is supposed to have some RAID capabilities, but those seem to be unavailable with a Mac. However, you can have it appear as 4 separate drives on your desktop, and that works well. Populating these drives takes a while (about 9 hours per TB), but once completed, things work reasonably fast. One issue is that the drives never stop spinning. I put the computer to sleep for the weekend, and on Monday morning the drives were spinning just as fast as they were on Friday evening. So you need to either turn everything off everyday, or just let them spin. The Mercury Rack Pro mini-SAS is a good hard drive that's big enough to last for a while. It works fast and is quite. I would recommend this product to anyone needing a fast drive, or for use as a back up.

Yes, any RAID features of this mini-SAS enclosure would be dependent on the HBA card you're using.
