Release Candidate (RC) firmware set

There are two kinds of firmware for SSDs Mass Production (MP) and Release Candidate (RC). Prior to an MP firmware release, there are beta firmware releases and an RC firmware release. Often, the RC is the same as the MP release, however there can be small changes and bug fixes made between the two. OWC has evaluated the RC for the 6Gb/s SandForce 2281 Processor and found it to be stable with no issues reported during our testing. However, as with any evolutionary product, issues may surface as different usages and configurations are employed and it is important to understand that there will be further updates and revisions.

Since no firmware update is currently offered for the OWC Mercury EXTREME Pro 6G SSD, no update page exists. To see the typical steps involved with a self performed field firmware update, please visit our 3Gb/s product update page at: http://eshop.macsales.com/Customized_Pages/Framework.cfm?page=sf_firmware.html

It is important to note that the current firmware update tool requires the use of Windows XP/Vista/7. OWC is currently working on a Mac OS based update tool, but we do not have an exact availability date.

  1. 1GB = 1,000,000,000 bytes. Total accessible capacity varies depending upon operating environment (typically 5-10% less). The actual total capacity will depend on your own defined file settings/preferences.
  2. Temperature reporting is currently an unsupported feature because due to the operating characteristics of SSDs, it is highly unlikely one would ever exceed an OWC Mercury SSD's stated operating temperature ceiling of 158F/70C. However, we are looking into supporting this feature in the future via a firmware update. Firmware updates can be found here: http://eshop.macsales.com/tech_center/OWC/SSD.

Rating: 5/5 old drive was slowing way down, so SSD to the rescue! July 4, 2018 Another client of mine had a pretty young MacBook Pro, but it was clearly slowing down. Needless to say, the mechanical hard drive had to go -- the slow-down was not normal, but a sign of premature aging. I installed this new SSD, and my client is very pleased with how fast his laptop is again. Much faster than it's ever been, of course.

Rating: 5/5 Speeds things up! June 20, 2018 I had a nice online chat with an agent who helped me decide what I really needed. Using the online installation videos makes installation so easy. There are also setup videos. I had some problems after installation but after a couple of chats they helped me work out what was happening. You cannot beat the products and service!

Rating: 5/5 Well-suited for the purpose June 7, 2018 This was bought along with some memory in order to turn an older Mini into something useful, not slow. It was a challenge to install, considering my big hands, but I eventually got the job done, and things are working fine.

Rating: 5/5 Excellent improvement to my MacBook. May 30, 2018 I found this SSD on sale and asked, via Chat, if it would work with my MacBook. The service with Chat is great. This SSD, I was told, would work and it did/does. Loads up a 500 page pdf file in seconds. I wish I would have purchased this hard drive replacement sooner as the speed is very noticeable. I added more memory years ago and with the addition of the SSD, my 2010 computer works better than when it was new!

Rating: 5/5 Another quality product! April 15, 2018 I recently bought another SSD from OWC but only 250GB size. This was for a relatives 21" iMac. And again a simple installation and setup for me. I would recommend anyone with alil common sense and review of OWC installation videos to try most upgrades. Keeping your machine upgraded or even replacing a component to correct a problem and doing it yourself saves time and money. And that in itself is rewarding.

Rating: 5/5 Very fast SSD at an affordable price March 29, 2018 I have bought this SSD for my 2010-vintage Mac Pro. Namely, I have mounted the SSD into the bay intended for a second optical drive. As this mounting location corresponds to an internal disk, you can install Windows (in addition to macOS) on any disk connected there. The SSD is, indeed, as fast as advertised and works like a charm. I wholeheartedly recommend the OWC 6G SSDs.

Rating: 5/5 So far...so great February 27, 2018 I bought this drive for a 2011 MacMini that we used for my 3 kids and a general family desktop computer. My wife and I each have laptops that are our primary computer but this is the only one for the kids to use for schoolwork and fun and they each have their own logins and parental controls. Here are my comments: [Note: I'm not a technician by any means, but I'm a little advanced because I've taken a few computers almost all the way apart including replacing a keyboard on a MacBook Pro 2009.]

- I used a Voyager drive holder, put the new SSD drive in it, hooked it up to the MacMini and used Carbon Copy Cloner to turn the new SSD into a full bootable clone.

- I used the Upgrade video on MacSales.com to instruct me on how to install it. I already had all the tools required but if you don't I highly recommend getting them especially if you plan to do any other upgrades. They are worth it. Replacing a drive in the MacMIni is definitely more complicated than an older MacBook Pro because the harddrive is a little trickier to get at. I think MacSales estimates 30 minutes. I think it took me an hour or a little more and that included gathering tools and getting set up. It's always dusty inside the MacMini so it takes a little bit to get the dust bunnies out.

- Installation issue--one of the last steps for removal said to pull the motherboard out the front slightly. I couldn't do this no matter how hard I tried. I don't know if my computer was so old it was stuck or if there was a step missing in the process but I couldn't do it. However, I was able to get the old drive out anyway and the new one in. It was probably a little harder than it would've been if I could've made more room by pulling out the motherboard a little but at least I could do it. The hardest part of the whole process was getting the new one in just because it was not easy to line it up right.

Result: It works really well. No difference from the old drive except it's SUPER fast.Might be as slow for start up but we don't turn the MacMini off constantly so we can't compare. But loading apps, running videos off the internet--it's light night and day. My kids were thrilled. Logging into their separate users was like watching grass grow and now it's really fast. I wish I would've done this sooner.

One of the reasons to get this SSD is because I hope to upgrade to Sierra or High Sierrra and the MacMini is on Yosemite but I hadn't to upgrade any more because it was slow. But the MacMini is great otherwise and the new models are not better and Apple hasn't updated the MacMini in ages so I wanted this MacMini to last.

So I'm a very satisfied user so far--one month later.

Rating: 5/5 Solid performer February 26, 2018 I installed this drive in a 7-year-old iMac (replacing the internal SuperDrive). Without performing any software optimization, I reduced the full power-on boot cycle from 5 minutes to 65 seconds.

Rating: 5/5 Can believe I didn't upgrade sooner! February 7, 2018 I was going to buy a new MBP but figured I'd save myself the money and upgrade the hard drive along with my memory and battery for a fraction of what a new MBP would cost. The process to transfer items took a day and I had to get a SATA cable which unfortunately isn't sold through this site (at least not to my knowledge). But installing took about 5 minutes and my fan doesn't come on as much anymore since there isn't as much heat generated. Definitely worth the money and I wish I upgraded sooner!

Rating: 5/5 Worthwhile upgrade for old HDs! January 26, 2018 Chose this drive based on recommendations provided by the MacSales web site. This drive replaced an original Apple 5400RPM HD as part of an upgrade of my nephew's mid-2012, non-retina 13" MBP. Replacement was straightforward following directions found online. The only slight glitch was that one of the side screws transferred from the original drive that helps keep the drive in its "cradle" could not be screwed all the way in on the new SSD. Opted for leaving it out as the drive was still secure with just three. Don't know if this was just a bad thread on either the drive or the screw itself, so not taking points away for that. Once installed and the OS re-imaged to High Sierra, the laptop was incredibly quick by comparison. Along with maximizing RAM, the best place to to spend upgrade dollars.
