Rating: 5/5SoftRAID 5 at a Great PriceApril 5, 2016Some have said it is noisy. It is NOT. In my opinion the fan could be larger, but is keeps the unit cool and the only time I am aware there is a fan is when the unit has to be shutdown and it makes a whine as it spins down. The SoftRaid just works. I was skeptical, but not any more. The "proper" setup takes some time to verify your drives, but found a bad drive for me before I had the unit in service. I would definitely buy it again. The cherry on the top is Thunderbolt. Fast, Fast, Fast! I would recommend this item to a friend! This review is from OWC ThunderBay 4, four-bay drive enclosure with dual Thunderbolt 2 ports, RAID 5 Solution.

Rating: 5/5I am impressed!April 2, 2016I upgraded my Mac Pro 5,1 to a 6,1 3.5 GHz 6-Core Intel Xeon E5. My old Mac Pro had a Sapphire 7950 video card, 32gb ram and an 1TB OWC Aura PCI SSD and internally ran a 16tb 4 disk raid using Soft Raid 5,
It is always a pain to manually transfer data from one computer to a new computer but I was up for the challenge. What intrigued and surprised me the most was thinking I was going to purchase the OWC ThunderBay 4 RAID and install the 4 drives from my old Mac Pro (they are only weeks old) into the new enclosure and have to format the drives as a RAID again and then copy all my data to the new RAID. However, when I installed the drives and booted my computer it recognized the 4 disk as the raid it was in my old Mac nullifying the need to copy the data. This made me very happy! Simply installing my old RAID Disks into the enclosure and Soft raid recognized the old RAID.
I was super impressed with the performance compared to the performance I got in old Mac Pro with the same drives and driver. The read write speeds are incredible. I don't have numbers to show, only that it was very noticeable in my everyday usage. In the future I will purchase another one of these drive enclosures.
BTW: MacSales/OWC has been my go to company for a few years now and they are the best. Support is wonderful and their products are very reliable. I have no problem buying new technologies from OWC .

Rating: 4/5Great RAID SolutionFebruary 21, 2016I'm a professional landscape photographer. If I'm not out in the field (literally) I'm immersed within Photoshop digitally processing and/or archiving photo files. Having access to a RAID system which provides both ample storage space and great speed is a must.
I highly recommend the Thunderbolt RAID systems. Overall performance is very impressive.
I was also particularly pleased that OWC made the installation/setup of this RAID system quick and easy by pre-installing each individual drive to its RAID housing unit.
The reason I do not give it 5 stars out of 5 is simply because of one factor: noise. This noise pertains directly to the RAID case – the enclosure itself. After a short period of time of use it started rattling. The rattling is not "loud," per se, but it does become quickly irritating. I have therefore ordered an extended cable and will be storing the unit as far from the computer terminal as possible. (If you press down upon the unit with a bit of force the rattling immediately stops. The case itself, therefore, needs to be redesigned to prevent this rattling.)

Rating: 5/5Fast and reliable!February 13, 2016I've been using my ThunderBay 4 for about 14 months now with four Hitachi DeskStar 4TB drives in RAID 5 for 12TB of usable drive space. It has been fast and absolutely rock solid with my 2011 MacBook Pro. No annoying random dismounts. I'm very pleased. If I had any complaints, it would be that the fan is a bit louder than I expected, and I had to buy an extra long Thunderbolt cable to be able to keep this under the guest bed on the far side of my home office so that the noise isn't distracting. Otherwise, it's very well built and has worked flawlessly for over a year. Here's to many more! I would recommend this item to a friend! This review is from 16TB OWC ThunderBay 4, four-drive HDD with dual Thunderbolt 2 ports, RAID 5 Solution.
Rating: 5/5Very impressedDecember 20, 2015I purchased the Thunderbay 4 RAID 5 edition and i've very happy with it. I bought 4 x 5TB drives with it so in RAID 5 i have 15TB of total storage which is actually a massive amount compared to trying to work with a single internal drive. People complained about it being noisy but i don't hear much more than a light fan spinning and it doesn't bother me at all. The best part of all is that Backblaze recognises it as a drive that can form part of your backup so i still have my second level of backup (the first being the RAID) which is a relief. It's pricey, but when compared to everything else on the market it's actually very well priced. I would definitely recommend it to anyone who needs more storage space. Important to mention that i work in video and animation (Premiere and After Effects) I would recommend this item to a friend! This review is from OWC ThunderBay 4, four-bay drive enclosure with dual Thunderbolt 2 ports, RAID 5 Solution.

Rating: 5/5Excellent 4 Bay OptionDecember 10, 2015I just picked up the new iMac and that makes my eSata drive enclosure somewhat obsolete so I decided to try the ThunderBay 4 based on some folks at the MacRumors forum recommending it. I have been running the ThunderBay for 3 weeks now and it has been flawless. Fans are quiet, drives are running fast and the sleep feature when not in use is a nice bonus. Great enclosure for any Mac owner. I would recommend this item to a friend! This review is from OWC ThunderBay 4, four-bay drive enclosure with dual Thunderbolt 2 ports, RAID 5 Solution.
Rating: 5/5Fast, trouble-free peace of mindDecember 8, 2015I've been using my 20GB ThunderBay 4 in RAID 5 configuration for about 6 weeks now. So far it has been flawless. The SoftRAID 5 software was easy to install and configure. The fan noise is negligible, though I saw a recommended alternative fan that is supposedly quieter if noise is an issue for you - unfortunately I don't think I'm allowed to post that info here. (I have not upgraded my fan.)
The bottom line is that I am very happy with the device and would recommend it to my friends.

Response from MacSales.com, Technical SupportNovember 23, 2015
Sound level can vary depending on the drives installed. Different drives have varying decibel levels. While the enclosure itself is fan-cooled, it uses an oversized 92 mm, low-turbulence, noise-quieting fan.

Rating: 5/5Up and running in a minuteOctober 17, 2015Now I can quite worrying about loosing client's videos. This RAID replaces a very random JOB cart system I've used with pretty good results for years but the new Drive Genius keeps finding problems with the attached drives. I haven't lost anything but have been stressing about the possibility.
Some people claim it is noisy but I expected some fan noise to keep 4 dives spinning and cool. Certainly not bothersome and isn't too loud for good video editing.
Rating: 4/5The backup that I needed.October 15, 2015As an experienced professional photographer with many TB of crucial data, I have tried numerous storage options over the years. The ThunderBay 4 is the best that I've used as it is both quick and quiet. There is some minimal fan noise, but it's quieter than my previous multi-bay storage unit, and the Thunderbolt connection is, in practice, two or three times as fast as that of my older eSATA 3 box. Best of all, this unit is a third of the size and has twice the storage capacity of it's predecessor at about a third of the price. Isn't technology grand?! I would recommend this item to a friend!

Rating: 5/5Lots of Extra Storage; Quick AccessAugust 22, 2015I bought this because I was running out of space to store photos and videos. My computer was full and all of my backup devices were almost full as well. I was looking for something that had RAID so that I could be reasonably assured that I would lot lose my work, had a lot of storage so that I would not use it up quickly, and be fast. The ThunderBay4 fit the description, so I purchased it based on my past positive experiences with OWC.
The unit itself is not too large, but it is rather heavy because the parts are made from a dense metal that gives a feeling of quality. The set-up was simple and the SoftRAID software was easy to install. The access speed via Thunderbolt is quite good on my 2011 MacBook Pro. The drive is audible as it works and you can hear the hum as it operates, reads, and writes data even though the sound dampening seems quite good. Nevertheless, the sound is not incredibly obtrusive and the unit could easily be put in a cabinet to further dampen it if need be.
Rating: 5/5Fast access and saves disksJuly 27, 2015I process weather data and have an archive of several years spanning about 100 TB of disk space, including mirrors of the data. By switching from simple mirrors to RAID 5, I essentially convert 6 disks to 4 disks and get two extras in return. By transferring the previous 4+ years of archive data to the OWC ThunderBay 4, it pays for itself in extra disk space, as well as makes reading and writing much faster, overall. I was also able to repurpose a couple Voyager Q's for other needs. This review is from OWC ThunderBay 4, four-bay drive enclosure with dual Thunderbolt 2 ports, RAID 5 Solution.

Rating: 3/5Good for the moneyJuly 3, 2015The good: This is a fast raid 5 drive. It is a good balance between capacity and security. It handles 4K files without issue. The bad: This is a loud drive, unsuitable for audio work. The marketing material says it is quiet. I'm not sure what standard they are using as a baseline. The ugly: My first drive sounded like a popcorn machine interrupted by occasional knocking sounds. OWC sent me a prepaid label to return it (good). They replaced the fan and sent it back. Total time from order placed to actually using it on a project - over 3 weeks. It is still the loudest drive in my studio and cannot be used for audio work. I recommend it with reservation. Rating: 5/5All hail the ThunderBay 4June 21, 2015I needed to migrate from my 2011 iMac to a new Retina iMac. Reinstalled my world on 4x1TB SSDs in the ThunderBay 4 with SoftRAID's RAID 5, swapped the iMacs, booted back up, pretty much picked up where I left off. No more worries about my data inside the iMac if it needs to go into service. Good speed from the software RAID through Thunderbolt 1 in the old iMac, great speed through Thunderbolt 2 in the new iMac. The fan adds a little low airflow to the noise floor in the room, but no annoying harmonics like the ThunderBay 4 mini, and I daresay not much louder than the internal HDD in my old iMac. Turns on and off with the iMac power and sleep, powers and connects my old WD My Passport Studio through Apple's Thunderbolt/FireWire adapter at the end of the chain. There is nothing else like this out there, and I looked around a lot... everyone else wants to force you to use their drives. Rating: 5/5Fast + affordable + reliable = WIN!June 15, 2015I just upgraded from a slightly older, popular 4TB raid to the 20TB ThunderBay 4 and love the expanded storage, faster speed and...shhhh, listen...it's quiet! The ThunderBay is more than fast enough for my current 1080p video work and the price point made it a lot less painful to upgrade the amount of storage I have. I am confidant that it'll be ready when I make the move to working with 4k content in the not too distant future. I would recommend this item to a friend!

Rating: 5/5FlawlessJune 4, 2015The 2013 Mac Pro (Trashcan) made me into a peripheral jockey and it was NOT a welcome duty... UNTIL I found this enclosure! It has performed flawlessly as a backup for my Pegasus Promise storing my working files. The ThunderBay has four 4TB's in it and I use Data Backup to mirror the Pegasus every day at 4pm. Had I known what I know now, I would have bought two Thunder Bays in the first place. When I bought the Pegasus, I thought it was the only compatible drive with the Apple Mac "Trashcan" Pro. Rating: 4/5ThunderBay 4 User reviewApril 20, 2015The ThunderBay 20TB unit is quiet. It does make some noise, as to be expected by 4 simultaneously spinning disks, but normal ambient sounds tend to render the sound coming from the unit undetectable. I sit with the unit 4 ft from my ears under the desk.
The performance I find a bit disappointing as I purchased this unit to be my edit system. I am running it RAID 5 which I know doesn't provide the best speeds available, but I thought it might be better than it is. To clarify, when the system does get up and spinning and I am working in Premier Pro CC2014, the files react without hesitation. My issue comes from the amount if time it takes a project in PP to load, depending on project size. I have one project that has ~1TB of video attached to it and it takes a good 3-5 minutes for PP to link media once launched.

Rating: 5/5Awesome!March 24, 2015Bought a new iMac Retina for photo processing. Needed external storage to be as quick as possible. I ordered a ThunderBay 4 and (4) 5TB Toshiba drives. It was extremely easy to assemble (add drives to). No external power brick, just a standard "PC" power cord. 1 awesome little thunderbolt connection and I was good to go. I'm using the SoftRAID 5 software, configured for RAID 5. It took less than 5 minutes to setup/configure before I was copying my Lightroom catalogs from my old computer to this bad boy. One 15TB drive as far as OSX is concerned and its been humming along super fast for a few weeks now. Couldn't be happier with this enclosure, the quality of OWC's products or how quickly it arrived (I live nearby, it showed up next day with their free ground day shipping). Rating: 5/5Using as main HD Raid5 to brand new iMac with SD and LOVE IT!!!March 20, 2015I am using this hard drive as the main drive for my brand-new 2015 iMac. It works very very well and I have had zero issues with this drive. I definately recommend this set up. I currently have the drive set up as a Raid5 configuration with 12 TB of storage. I have moved all of my programs my home folder and all large files to this drive and it didn't slow down the Lightning speed of my new computer. An extremely solid drive for a fantastic price. Again I would HIGHLY recommend this drive to anyone I repeat anyone with an Apple computer.
