  1. USB 3 port supports bus-powered drives with .9A (900mA) or less power requirements as well as drives connected to a power adapter.
  2. USB 3 port provides .9A (900mA) of power. This will charge devices requiring 1.0A at slower rate than factory power adapter. Larger devices like tablets requiring 2.1A will not charge. There is no power supplied to USB 3 (or USB 2) port while host computer is turned off or in “sleep” mode.

Rating: 5/5 Looks good so far! August 13, 2021 Received the unit today, plugged it in (2 x HDMI and 2 x USB-A) and everything just worked. I’m surprised it doesn’t have a USB-C input for power, but everything else works just fine.

I would recommend this item to a friend!

Response from OWC, Support August 13, 2021 Happy to hear everything is up and running!

Rating: 4/5 Functions as expected with one qualification... August 3, 2021 I ordered two of the 5 port Thunderbolt 3 mini Docks on Friday and received them on Monday. Great order fulfillment.

In general, the dock is functioning as expected. I have a 2016 MacBook Pro (personal) and a 2020 MacBook Pro (work). I wanted a portable docking station that allows me to carry them with me and also supports my dual 4k monitor setup while at home (where the computers spend most of their time). The 4K HDMI is running at 60Hz as expected.

My one disappointment is that I have a Dygma Raise keyboard which requires a USB 3 port that, at a minimum, delivers 0.9mA. While the USB 3 port does say it supports 0.9mA, the keyboard isn't functioning as expected when plugged into the dock. I haven't spent enough time yet to see if it might be a cable quality problem or something else. (I am using a KVM switch so there is room for the problem to be elsewhere. The keyboard does function as expected if plugged into another dongle-based USB-A port on my Mac.) If the keyboard is connected to another USB-A dongle on the computer, it works as expected.

The one other design change I would like to see is for the device to use a standard Thunderbolt cable between the device and the computer instead of a permanently connected cable. It has been my experience that cables are the item most likely to fail and it would be nice to be able to replace it.

In general, this is a great solution for those looking for a portable solution that wants to use dual 4k monitors on a thunderbolt laptop. The USB and Gig-E ports, in addition to the HDMI ports, supply the typical connectivity that I require.

I would recommend this product.

Response from OWC, Support August 5, 2021 Thank you for your positive feed back! I am sorry to hear the keyboard isn't working with the USB connection. If you have any further questions after working with the dock please let us know.

Rating: 4/5 I didn't expect that! June 29, 2021 The goal was to free up a Thunderbolt port on the laptop so that I could turn off the monitors at night and give the quietly glowing backlights some chill time. First thing I ran into was the really short Thunderbolt 3 wire to the mini dock that forced the mini dock to be hanging off the port without touching the tabletop. If I could replace that wire I would, but it is attached permanently to the mini dock. There are, as far as I know, no Thunderbolt 3 cable extenders. To fix this problem, I could change the stand the laptop is sitting on, but this seems egregious - why is this cable so short?

The second thing I found isn't, as far as I can tell, a mini Dock, OWC or MacSales issue. Even when I gave the OWC dual drive bay (a separate product) its own dedicated Thunderbolt port, turning off the monitors had the mysterious effect of disabling the backup system anyway. I don't pretend to understand why turning off a monitor on one of the T3 ports disables the backup hardware on the other T3 port on the same side of the laptop.

Anyway, the backup system just continues on as if nothing bad happened when I power up the monitors in the morning, so ultimately not a big deal. The Samsung monitors don't sleep the backlights, that's the problem, and I shut 'em off at night.

The third thing: If you hook three (!) 4K displays to your laptop, you might run into a problem with the refresh rate of the displays being downshifted to 30Hz, and/or the ethernet connection not going as fast as you'd otherwise expect. I don't think this is a problem with the mini Dock either, it could be a bandwidth constraint of the Thunderbolt ports on the laptop. I had all three monitors running at 60Hz but the internet was limited to 100 Mbps down; if one of those was running at 30Hz, the internet connection ran at >300 Mbps.

I recommend the mini dock, keep in mind that T3 cable is only 8 inches long.

Response from OWC, Support June 30, 2021 Thanks for that review. We work hard to design quality products that customers can take on the go. Part of the reason this has a short cable is due to this being intended for those who are on the go. The display and ethernet are determined byThunderbolt connectivity as it relies still on that single connection to power/utilize all of those components. However it is nice to know and hear feedback/suggestions as it does help us improve our products and know the concerns of our customers. So thank you for letting us know and helping us to improve and grow our products. :)

Rating: 4/5 All the ports I use, and nothing I don't June 8, 2021 Moved to this from another portable dock to get the second HDMI... very pleased with the change. It stays on my desk at all times, but I wouldn't have a problem packing it up and taking it wherever. Has all the ports I use almost every day, and nothing I don't. Very solid build. My one complaint... the thunderbolt cable is very short: if you're planning to attach this to a laptop on a stand, it may nor lie flat on the desktop.

Rating: 5/5 5-Port Thunderbold 3 mini-dock works great for my use! June 7, 2021 Needed something like this to let me easily attach 2 HDMI monitors, an USB external disk and Ethernet to my 2019 MacBook Pro. This lets me do it with one connection and worked great right out of the box!

Rating: 5/5 High Quality Dock October 9, 2020 I have a 2018 Macbook Pro 15" and wanted to drive my two external HP 27es (27") displays with HDMI cables as well as get an ethernet port in one dock. The dock did not require any installation of software or drivers, just plugged it in and both monitors woke up. I did not realize that I'd also still be able to use the MacBook Pro's screen in addition to the two externals. Dock has a solid feel due to the metal enclosure. Am using the USB ports for Logitech smart hub plugs for the wireless mouse and keyboard. I would buy this product again, as it has the quality I've come to expect from OWC/Macsales.

Rating: 5/5 Great Versatility in One Package! September 6, 2020 I was looking for something like this but found our local '... Made Easy' outlet did not have such a product. They seem to favor having separate adapters for each kind of port. Ordering from OWC was easy, but the product came a bit late. That was owing to a passing hurricane which grounded pretty much all air cargo transiting the central pacific. But the box arrived intact soon after the storm had passed. Altogether a very versatile port addition in a compact space!

Rating: 5/5 Great for Macbook pro laptops August 17, 2020 A simple plug-in device using up only one of the four available Thunderbolt 3 ports on my 2019 MacBook pro. I use one of the HDMI ports to bridge a video stream to my BMD ATEM Mini Pro for streaming. The second HDMI port is useful for an external monitor. The USB ports are real handyby precluding the use of adapters.
