Includes a 2.5" drive, enclosure, and toolkit to upgrade/replace the internal drive in your Mac.
Upgrade/Replace your internal drive
The Drive and Tools you need to Upgrade/Replace the existing 2.5" Drive in your laptop, Mac mini, Xbox, PS3, etc + make the drive being replaced an External for data transfer, backup, and/or additional portable storage.

Everything you need in one package, immediately ready to assemble and:
  • Backup and store your data with style and confidence.
  • Take your data with you - small enough to keep in a pocket!
  • Easily add additional laptop storage with no AC adapter required.
Examples of how this bus-powered Express bundle can be used in real world situations:

Power Users / Travelers: Relocate your "home folder" to your Express and have your files with you at home, at work or on the road without the need to synchronize your machines.

Laptop Owners: Clone your current internal SATA hard drive in your laptop to the new drive. Then install the new, larger drive in your laptop and keep the smaller drive in your Express for additional storage space.

iTunes Aficionados: Keep a copy of your iTunes library on your external drive to play on multiple machines.

Gamers: Add additional storage to your XBox 360 or PS3 game console to store music, media, and other downloads. PS3 even includes a backup utility to protect your internal drive's data.

For Everyone: Have the piece of mind of a complete backup plan. Create a bootable clone of your hard drive at regular intervals so if your computer goes down, your productivity doesn't go down with it. Boot to another computer and keep on working!

Release Candidate (RC) firmware set

There are two kinds of firmware for SSDs Mass Production (MP) and Release Candidate (RC). Prior to an MP firmware release, there are beta firmware releases and an RC firmware release. Often, the RC is the same as the MP release, however there can be small changes and bug fixes made between the two. OWC has evaluated the RC for the 6Gb/s SandForce 2281 Processor and found it to be stable with no issues reported during our testing. However, as with any evolutionary product, issues may surface as different usages and configurations are employed and it is important to understand that there will be further updates and revisions.

Since no firmware update is currently offered for the OWC Mercury EXTREME Pro 6G SSD, no update page exists. To see the typical steps involved with a self performed field firmware update, please visit our 3Gb/s product update page at: http://eshop.macsales.com/Customized_Pages/Framework.cfm?page=sf_firmware.html

It is important to note that the current firmware update tool requires the use of Windows XP/Vista/7. OWC is currently working on a Mac OS based update tool, but we do not have an exact availability date.

  1. 1GB = 1,000,000,000 bytes. Total accessible capacity varies depending upon operating environment (typically 5-10% less). The actual total capacity will depend on your own defined file settings/preferences.
  2. In terms of standard gigabytes, 1GiB ≈ 1.074GB and refers to the actual formatted capacity of shown under Mac OS 10.5 or earlier and Microsoft Windows OS.
  3. Specific application environments such as temperature and duty cycle will affect the overall reliability.
  4. Specifications provided by SandForce.
  5. Temperature reporting is currently an unsupported feature because due to the operating characteristics of SSDs, it is highly unlikely one would ever exceed an OWC Mercury SSD's stated operating temperature ceiling of 158F/70C. However, we are looking into supporting this feature in the future via a firmware update. Firmware updates can be found here: http://eshop.macsales.com/tech_center/OWC/SSD.

Rating: 5/5 excellent upgrade, piece of cake November 27, 2016 The new 480G SSD and 16G memory upgrade made my 2012 MacBook Pro like a new machine. It's so much faster now. Very responsive and seems more reliable too. The upgrade was definitely worth it. Installing the new parts was painless and the video that instructed me how to do it was very clear. The ordering process thru MacSales.com was so easy, getting the right stuff that was compatible with my mac was flawless, and the price was right. I will definitely buy from MacSales.com again should I need another upgrade in the future.

Rating: 5/5 If you do only one upgrade... November 26, 2016 If you do only one upgrade to your Mac - this is the one. This upgrade took the boot up time to near zero. We have two exactly MacBook Pros - both bought at the same time, early 2013 machines. I replaced the old drive with this SSD in one and didn't tell my co-worker that I had done it. I told him I wanted to see if my machine was booting okay and so we shut both machines down and turned them on at the same moment. My machine booted, loaded my usual programs, booted up Parallels (I have Windows 10 loaded on my machine as well) and booted up Outlook in the time it took his machine to log in (not that Macs take long to boot up but every little bit helps). His jaw dropped and asked what setting I had changed. Within a week we'd ordered another of these drives and replaced his old drive with this as well. Installation is pretty simple and I will never go back to the old hard drives. Buy this. You should've ordered it before starting reading this review. You will not regret it.

Rating: 5/5 Delighted! November 18, 2016 I replaced Apple's slow, laptop-quality hard drive in my 2012 Mac mini with this 480GB Electra 6G SSD. Following OWC's video and using tools they supplied, the exchange went without a hitch.

The result is a delight. Reads are now six times faster and writes three times faster. Even backups to an external hard drive are now twice as fast. I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to give new life to their old Mac.

The price was great too. That hard drive was four years old and, I suspect, not long for this world. Replacing it before it died meant less hassle. Having decided to replace it, doing so with a much faster SSD was an easy choice.

Rating: 5/5 Old MacBook Pro now runs like new November 17, 2016 Replaced the 500 GB hard drive on my early 2011 MacBook Pro. Very easy with the supplied tools and online video instructions. Upgraded to OS X Sierra at same time as new install then ported all apps and data with Migration Assistant. Worked like a charm. Now laptop is quick and snappy. Re-boots in 1/10 the time. Very pleased!

Rating: 5/5 Sweet! November 17, 2016 Bought two of these. One for a 2010 Mac Mini and the other for a 2011 17" MacBook Pro. Installation on the Pro was extremely easy but the Mac Mini had to really come apart to get it in. The MacMini "How to Video" was awesome and I felt confident the whole time. Both drives are up and running and FAST! Well worth the bother and expense. Highly recommend.

Rating: 5/5 Excellent upgrade November 13, 2016 My mini had been gradually been getting much slower when loading new applications. After installing the SSD drive that all changed dramatically. The speed was far better than the mini was when it was new--I was shocked. The video instructions were spot on. I had been debating about upgrading computers at a significant add'l cost, but am really glad I didn't. Would highly recommend this product.

Rating: 5/5 Best speed increase ever November 8, 2016 Until I got this SSD drive, I didn't realize how much time I spent waiting for my drive. I guess it makes sense since computers now do over a billion instructions per second - even high level coding and inefficient algorithms has a hard time using up a noticeable amount of real-time to a user. But, the spin and seek time of a rotating hard drive does - measured in seconds and tens of milliseconds respectively. These disappear with the SSD. My main concern will be with longevity, but recent HDDs haven't fared so well, so it won't be too hard to match them. Cost seems to be the main limit and if this one lasts 3 years, then it will have paid for itself and the performance will be for free!

Rating: 5/5 Great product and service November 8, 2016 This Solid State hard drive has been great so far. The free tutorial videos that were provided made the switch very easy to implement. I have seen significant improvement in my 2012 Macbook Pro after the switch.

Rating: 5/5 Easy install and it works as advertised November 8, 2016 My MacBook Pro has been getting slower by the year. It is a 2011 13". It took me about 20 minutes to replace the hard drive with the SSD and as soon as I booted up - wow. My MacBook is literally hundreds of times faster - booting up now takes about 20 seconds instead of the 5-6 minutes it took with the old hard drive. Programs run faster, files are found quickly - awesome.

I was thinking of buying a new MacBook but new ones start at $1700. For under $250 I now have the performance of new Mac. This is the way to go.

Rating: 5/5 My New 2007 Mac Pro November 8, 2016 This drive basically turned my old Mac Pro into a BRAND new Mac Pro, the difference is night and day, it used to take over 5 min to start, now its almost instant - maybe 30 secs. If you looking for a nice upgrade to your old mac, i def recommend on of these drives!

Rating: 5/5 Best money ever spent, like, actually, ever. November 8, 2016 My mid-2012 2.9Ghz Intel Core i7 was no slouchy computer by any means. Upgraded the Ram from 8 to 16 which helped quite a bit, but I had just begun to accept that it takes 2 minutes to open applications.... and now that the machine is running on the SSD - it is ABSOLUTELY like night and day. Startup to login screen is now like 28 seconds, and have a FULLY loaded and functional machine by 45 seconds. Apps are opening in 1 second flat, and GoPro Editing is a whole new world. I had no idea. This couple hundred breathed new life of at least 2 more years into this workhorse! Stop contemplating. Buy it. The end.

Rating: 5/5 Better than new November 3, 2016 2011 MacBook just had logic board replaced by Apple due to video card failure (model known for issue). Once I got it back I upgraded to the SDD drive and replaced the battery. Replaced my ram. Total cost of upgrades under $400. The machine performs incredibly well. No more dock bouncing when launching apps. Startup is less than 30 seconds. Unbelievable difference.

Rating: 5/5 Mind officially blown November 3, 2016 I installed this kit into an iMac, late 2013. Since purchasing the iMac, I've felt that the stock hard drive was either ridiculously slow or defective. Open iMovie? Go grab a cup of coffee. Open Photos? Take a nap. I was kicking myself that I didn't upgrade the drive to either the Fusion or the flash storage. But the flash storage was only a 256GB drive. I would have had to juggle where I would have put all of my stuff. Enter the Mercury Electra SSD. I'll skip right to the chase. WOW. I shouldn't have to say any more, but I will. iMovie and Photos jumped open and were instantly ready to go. Good grief. This is how computers are supposed to work. The iMac now feels like a much stronger machine, possibly because it is a strong machine and just needed the proper drive to match its speed. Now, the installation. For the most part, the install went through without any major glitches. There are a couple of caveats though. The first came when I went to lift the screen off of the base. It would go as easy as the video showed. There is an adhesive at the bottom of the screen that prevented an easy pull off. I think the video should address that. Second, the SATA cable on my drive was one piece vs the two piece one shown in the video. Mine also was not as easy to remove as there wasn't much play to lift the drive. Taking the SATA connector off was much easier than putting it back on the new SSD drive. I felt like my fingers has swelled or had all turned to thumbs. When I did finally get it lined up, it slid right on. Also, the rubber sleeve on the drive that is shown in the video was different than mine. The video showed a one piece unit whereas mine was 2 pieces that were pretty much held in place by the adhesive on the sides. Everything else in the video was spot on and easy to follow. So now I have an iMac that is the workhorse I had hoped it would be.Thank you OWC.

Rating: 5/5 Excellent SSD kit - Easy to install November 1, 2016 I had no problems swapping out my MacBook spindle drive for the new SSD thanks to the excellent instruction videos and installation kit provided. So far, the SSD has been fantastic in speed. The external drive case that is part of the kit is made of plastic and is not the most durable feeling piece of equipment I have seen, but it does the job. In my case, the drive won't be beat around to where this might be an issue. In contrast, the included USB3 cable seems to be of very high quality. Even with the slow OEM spindle drive, the USB3 connection feels quite speedy with the enclosure.

All in all, I have been very pleased with the SSD drive kit. We'll see how the drive performs over time.

Rating: 4/5 Great kit - Easy to install October 26, 2016 Perfect kit to revamp my 2011 MBP. Instead of changing the computer, always go for a SSD upgrade first when computer feels slow. I have added 8 GB of RAM and the combo was perfect. Now my MBP is back to normal speed. Boot and closing is life changing.

Rating: 4/5 I love my ssd drive but you should dismiss USB 2 inclosure October 15, 2016 You can never realize how fast a computer can be with a ssd drive until you install one! I just regret I didn't check for USB version on the inclosure. I got an USB 2.... what's the use today for usb2? Doesn't make sense. Next time I'll double check.

Rating: 5/5 Great SSD Drive September 25, 2016 If you haven't change to an SSD drive you are missing the greatest change in computer history since the floppy disk. The performance change in my computers have been from heaven to earth. Even old computers perform better with an SSD. Not even thinking of going back to regular HD. I only use them for backup or for portable memory only.
