Upgrade/Replace your internal drive
The Drive and Tools you need to Upgrade/Replace the existing 2.5" Drive in your laptop, Mac mini, Xbox, PS3, etc + make the drive being replaced an External for data transfer, backup, and/or additional portable storage.

Everything you need in one package, immediately ready to assemble and:
  • Backup and store your data with style and confidence.
  • Take your data with you - small enough to keep in a pocket!
  • Easily add additional laptop storage with no AC adapter required.
Examples of how this bus-powered Express bundle can be used in real world situations:

Power Users / Travelers: Relocate your "home folder" to your Express and have your files with you at home, at work or on the road without the need to synchronize your machines.

Laptop Owners: Clone your current internal SATA hard drive in your laptop to the new drive. Then install the new, larger drive in your laptop and keep the smaller drive in your Express for additional storage space.

iTunes Aficionados: Keep a copy of your iTunes library on your external drive to play on multiple machines.

Gamers: Add additional storage to your XBox 360 or PS3 game console to store music, media, and other downloads. PS3 even includes a backup utility to protect your internal drive's data.

For Everyone: Have the piece of mind of a complete backup plan. Create a bootable clone of your hard drive at regular intervals so if your computer goes down, your productivity doesn't go down with it. Boot to another computer and keep on working!

Release Candidate (RC) firmware set

There are two kinds of firmware for SSDs Mass Production (MP) and Release Candidate (RC). Prior to an MP firmware release, there are beta firmware releases and an RC firmware release. Often, the RC is the same as the MP release, however there can be small changes and bug fixes made between the two. OWC has evaluated the RC for the 6Gb/s SandForce 2281 Processor and found it to be stable with no issues reported during our testing. However, as with any evolutionary product, issues may surface as different usages and configurations are employed and it is important to understand that there will be further updates and revisions.

Since no firmware update is currently offered for the OWC Mercury EXTREME Pro 6G SSD, no update page exists. To see the typical steps involved with a self performed field firmware update, please visit our 3Gb/s product update page at: http://eshop.macsales.com/Customized_Pages/Framework.cfm?page=sf_firmware.html

It is important to note that the current firmware update tool requires the use of Windows XP/Vista/7. OWC is currently working on a Mac OS based update tool, but we do not have an exact availability date.

  1. 1GB = 1,000,000,000 bytes. Total accessible capacity varies depending upon operating environment (typically 5-10% less). The actual total capacity will depend on your own defined file settings/preferences.
  2. In terms of standard gigabytes, 1GiB ≈ 1.074GB and refers to the actual formatted capacity of shown under Mac OS 10.5 or earlier and Microsoft Windows OS.
  3. Specific application environments such as temperature and duty cycle will affect the overall reliability.
  4. Specifications provided by SandForce.
  5. Temperature reporting is currently an unsupported feature because due to the operating characteristics of SSDs, it is highly unlikely one would ever exceed an OWC Mercury SSD's stated operating temperature ceiling of 158F/70C. However, we are looking into supporting this feature in the future via a firmware update. Firmware updates can be found here: http://eshop.macsales.com/tech_center/OWC/SSD.

Rating: 5/5 just works and easy to install October 7, 2016 This is the first 480GB kit I've installed (into an early 2011 MacBook Pro), but I've also installed two 240GB kits into late 2009 and mid 2012 white MacBooks). Just like the others, this was trivial to physically install using the clear video instructions. Copying over our OS and data was just as clear using the provided web page. I timed two things before and after the change: 1) cold-booting the laptop and getting to gmail and 2) shutting down from the point of starting to close gmail to all lights being off. Both were almost 5x faster after installing this SSD. This takes otherwise sound old laptops which were sadly getting very slow and draggy and makes them very usable again, letting my 3 kids keep using their old Apple college laptops and avoid them having to buy expensive new ones.

Rating: 5/5 New life for an old notebook October 2, 2016 I debated doing this for a long time. Now I wish I'd done it sooner! I upgraded the HD to the 7200rpm 512Gb when I bought my MacBook Pro in mid-2010 and I was glad for the extra speed. However, as I filled the disk up even defragmenting was just not helping performance enough. Getting a new system was not an option since 17" MacBook Pro's are no longer made. So I decided to get the 1Tb SSD when I replaced the aging battery. WOW! Who needs a faster CPU? The system boots in well under a minute and everything starts noticeably faster! This is the least expensive way to get a new Mac!!

The performance change in my computers have been from heaven to earth. Even old computers perform better with an SSD. Not even thinking of going back to regular HD. I only use them for backup or for portable memory only.

Rating: 5/5 Makes your machine like new for a fraction of the cost! September 22, 2016 Purchasing this SSD drive, as well as 16GB of RAM, made my machine like new again! Extremely easy install. If your old hard drive works, purchase the USB tray and keep that in there as a backup drive.

HELPFUL TIP: My optic drive died years ago and there wasn't a need to keep it in the machine anymore. I took it out when I swapped out the drives. The tech at the genius bar recommended this to me, saying it helps to speed things up even more since it's not looking for the optic drive.

Rating: 5/5 Speed Demon September 19, 2016 Installing the OWC drive was simple in my Macbook Pro and the speed difference was excellent. Make sure that you use a good copy program from your original disk to the SSD so that it copies everything. I saved the laptop hard drive on an external enclosure, but have not had to use it for anything. I'll probably convert it to a time machine drive.

Rating: 5/5 Excellent product and customer service! September 12, 2016 This SSD drive rocks. My computer runs so much faster and I can leave it turned on when traveling. Much more super than the regular hard drive, even though it's $250 more, it's worth every penny.

Rating: 5/5 Terrific September 11, 2016 I upgraded my memory from the original 2 gigs to 6 gigs (which OWC was the only source that said it would work, and it helped --maybe a 30% improvement in speed, i then put the SSD in and the results were AMAZING. It reduced start up time from more than 3 minutes to about 30-40 seconds. It (2008 MacBook Pro) is barely slower than my 2015 MacBook Pro which has 16 gigs of RAM. If I had known of the improvement, I would not have bought the 2015 model

Rating: 5/5 Great product - great installation videos September 9, 2016 Installed this SSD in my wife's MacBook Pro and it significantly increased the performance. Product is of high quality and price very competitive.

Besides the quality/price, OWC's library of installation videos are FANTASTIC. Made opening the laptop, removing the HD, installing the SSD and tranferring the files from the HD to the SSD quite straight forward.

Rating: 5/5 Saved September 6, 2016 Original Hard Drive died; new one was a cinch to install and having the ability to download a version of MacOS to create a bootable thumb drive and load to the new hard drive made it easy.

Rating: 5/5 Super Happy, 5 year old Mac now like new! September 4, 2016 My 2011 PowerBook Pro was showing it's age.... the battery lasted 2 hours MAX and the computer was getting painfully slow at routine tasks. I got this battery and an SD drive... and WOW! It really is like a new machine. I was hesitant to spend close to $400 for these two items - when I could get a new MacBook for around a grand... but, in the end, $400 is a lot less than a $1,000! And, my 5 year old MacBook Pro now rivals my wife's new MacBook Air in terms of speed... so, I am VERY happy with my decision. Oh - and I get about 4 to 5 hours out of the new battery under heavy use.... not bad.

Rating: 5/5 New life! September 2, 2016 I bought it for my Macbook late 2009.. Installation is really easy but backup and transferring were a little bit tough tho, cause it took a lot of time but it's all done now. And it seems like I have brand new laptop (I also bought new battery and memory 8gb)! With all the instruction "how to change", that was easy to do everything. I hope everything is going to work well and for long time! Thank you!

Rating: 5/5 You saved my MBP~! September 1, 2016 I upgrade my very old macbook pro early 2008 to new ssd. From the shipping and asking questions, everything was awesome. The most impressive thing is absolute the speed of mac. Although I'm a light user, It had a problem with jamming frequently. Now it is flying away. I'm really satisfied with the ssd and OWC.

Rating: 5/5 Need seatbelt August 27, 2016 My 1TB HHD was running so hot and so slow I was contemplating buying a new computer. Bad option for a missionary. A friend suggested a SSD upgrade. The price was phenomenal; under $400. It was easy to switch out with the tools provided and the instructions. And the case for the HHD was perfect. Now I have all of my files on the backup, can move whatever I need onto the SSD. Wasn't so lucky with the programs like Photoshop for Mac but that was probably my problem, not OWC's. I would definitely recommend purchasing the 1TB SSD; you will think you are running stealth. Don't hesitate, buy one now.
