Upgrade/Replace your internal drive
The Drive and Tools you need to Upgrade/Replace the existing 2.5" Drive in your laptop, Mac mini, Xbox, PS3, etc + make the drive being replaced an External for data transfer, backup, and/or additional portable storage.

Everything you need in one package, immediately ready to assemble and:
  • Backup and store your data with style and confidence.
  • Take your data with you - small enough to keep in a pocket!
  • Easily add additional laptop storage with no AC adapter required.
Examples of how this bus-powered Express bundle can be used in real world situations:

Power Users / Travelers: Relocate your "home folder" to your Express and have your files with you at home, at work or on the road without the need to synchronize your machines.

Laptop Owners: Clone your current internal SATA hard drive in your laptop to the new drive. Then install the new, larger drive in your laptop and keep the smaller drive in your Express for additional storage space.

iTunes Aficionados: Keep a copy of your iTunes library on your external drive to play on multiple machines.

Gamers: Add additional storage to your XBox 360 or PS3 game console to store music, media, and other downloads. PS3 even includes a backup utility to protect your internal drive's data.

For Everyone: Have the piece of mind of a complete backup plan. Create a bootable clone of your hard drive at regular intervals so if your computer goes down, your productivity doesn't go down with it. Boot to another computer and keep on working!

Release Candidate (RC) firmware set

There are two kinds of firmware for SSDs Mass Production (MP) and Release Candidate (RC). Prior to an MP firmware release, there are beta firmware releases and an RC firmware release. Often, the RC is the same as the MP release, however there can be small changes and bug fixes made between the two. OWC has evaluated the RC for the 6Gb/s SandForce 2281 Processor and found it to be stable with no issues reported during our testing. However, as with any evolutionary product, issues may surface as different usages and configurations are employed and it is important to understand that there will be further updates and revisions.

Since no firmware update is currently offered for the OWC Mercury EXTREME Pro 6G SSD, no update page exists. To see the typical steps involved with a self performed field firmware update, please visit our 3Gb/s product update page at: http://eshop.macsales.com/Customized_Pages/Framework.cfm?page=sf_firmware.html

It is important to note that the current firmware update tool requires the use of Windows XP/Vista/7. OWC is currently working on a Mac OS based update tool, but we do not have an exact availability date.

  2. Temperature reporting is currently an unsupported feature because due to the operating characteristics of SSDs, it is highly unlikely one would ever exceed an OWC Mercury SSD's stated operating temperature ceiling of 158F/70C. However, we are looking into supporting this feature in the future via a firmware update. Firmware updates can be found here: http://eshop.macsales.com/tech_center/OWC/SSD.

Rating: 5/5 SSD is great, enclosure hmmm... January 15, 2017 The SSD upgrade is excellent. The enclosure is quite useful - however I had trouble for awhile before I figured out the cable was bad. The drive powered up but was not recognized. Luckily I had another cable and that fixed the problem. Also, I never got an answer to "what is Shipping Insurance"?

Rating: 5/5 Great Products backed by Excellent Support! January 10, 2017 I decided to give my older (but still vibrant) Mid 2009 MacBook Pro some help by getting it's tired, old, butt into better shape. I happened onto MacSales by chance, liked what I saw and ordered a 1 TB SSD and a RAM upgrade from 4gb to 8gb (it's maximum). I'm terrified of opening my computer fearful I will only do more damage and incur greater costs in repairs. I watched the videos on MacSales and they were both straightforward and seemed simple as well. I had no problem installing the new RAM - which gave me the courage to tackle the Hard Drive the week after. Whenever I had a question or hit a snag, MacSales Support personnel were available all the time by chat or phone and all of them were helpful and friendly. The laptop has gotten a much needed kick in the pants and both the new RAM and SSD have performed brilliantly. I'm a more than happy customer and I will be back when I'm ready to perform similar magic on my Mac Pro. Cheers to Macsales, their great products and excellent support!

Rating: 5/5 Mac runs like new! January 9, 2017 This kit, and the accompanying install videos, made replacing the dying drive in my MacBook Pro easy and efficient. As long as you have a solid backup of your data, it's simple. And having the external housing for the original drive made it possible for me to recover a few files that weren't in my last backup. Awesome.

Rating: 5/5 In love with my mid 2010 MacBook Pro again January 5, 2017 After installing sierra I thought my mbp was dead. After all, it is more than 6 years old. It was painfully slow & apps were quitting left & right. Chrome was unuseable. I took a chance and installed the full complement of ram, an ssd, and a new battery because mine was swollen & the trackpad didn't work. Now I'm in love with my Mac all over again--for well under $400. Installation was super easy & the update was seamless. I now have 500 gig internal & my old drive is external. I could have installed both internal but like having the DVD. Couldn't be happier with my purchase. It boots fast and runs all the apps I can throw at it.

Rating: 5/5 Great warranty and install kit. December 31, 2016 I give this product for value and function 5*. I will say that OWC should find a way to be more transparent about speed. This would make comparison to other products easier. Performance of the drive is great.

Rating: 5/5 Wow! What a difference. December 30, 2016 My early 2008 macbook pro 15" seemed like it was on it's last leg. It took 4-5 minutes to boot and every app took a minute to boot. I put the 240G SSD in it and it's faster then when I first got it. It saved me from having to buy a new macbook pro.

Rating: 5/5 Ordered on Monday, Installed on Tuesday, Writing Review on Wednesday December 21, 2016 Ordered this for mid-2010 MacBook Pro owned by my wife. Improvement in performance is over the top. Needless to say, she's very happy with her "new" MacBook Pro. Installed the 8MB memory upgrade as well. Just FYI: I'm a mostly Windows user, and was able to work my way thru the whole install without incident. I tried cloning first, but threw the towel in on that and did the download of the fresh O/S 10.12.2 and then used the built-in Apple data migration utility to COMPLETELY move all data and apps to the new SSD drive from the old hard drive. This took most of the time - about 2-3 hours total to move a couple hundred GB of data over. I may now replace the 1TB hard drive on my Dell desktop because of how well this worked out.

Rating: 5/5 The Electra 3G SSD has made my 2008 MacBook feel new again December 15, 2016 I had been planning for some time now to upgrade my late 2008 MacBook with an SSD but only when a colleague mentioned his experience with OWC did I make the leap. Your customer service is top-notch and the online documentation is great. The installation was easy and relatively painless. I am now enjoying the fact that my 8 year old laptop feels new again and can be used for tasks that I used to avoid before. Thanks again for a great product & great support.

Rating: 5/5 Impressive Upgrade for 2009 MBP December 11, 2016 On the advice of a colleague, I explored upgrading my MacBook Pro. My colleague had recently done the same to his and found it to be easy to do. I started exploring various online resources and found the Macsales site to be co easy to follow - other sites I'd reviewed weren't as well thought out and left me uneasy about whether or not I was ordering the correct components. After ordering and paying for the components, they arrived quickly by courier. I followed an online video and the job was done in less than an hour. Everything worked as promised and my (mid-2009) MBP is now much (much) faster. I'm next upgrading my (mid-2011) iMac with RAM. Based on reviewing the install video upgrading the hard drive looks too difficult.

Rating: 5/5 Another awesome, easy to install product! December 2, 2016 This is the second MacBook Pro in which I swapped the HD or original, small SSD for a larger capacity SSD from OWC. Easy to find the right model, easy to purchase, and easy to install, especially with the video tutorials offered by OWC.

Thanks for breathing new life into my 6 & 8 year old MacBook Pros, especially considering the price of the new ones!

Rating: 5/5 Excellent upgrade for my MacBook Pro November 17, 2016 This SSD upgrade was simple to do and required only around 15 minutes following the OWC installation video and the packaged tools. I used Carbon Copy Cloner to copy the old HD contents to the SSD; this process took overnight to copy the 229 GB of data. The mid-2009 MacBook Pro seems like a new machine! Excellent upgrade and definitely worthwhile.

Rating: 5/5 Very Easy November 10, 2016 The hard drive was extremely easy to install. I had zero issues. It came with everything needed and extras. The kit to use my old hard drive as an external was a huge bonus. That's what sold me on it and it is nice quality and so far works flawlessly.

Rating: 5/5 Great speed up November 8, 2016 The end result is a great speed increase. However this is not for the amateur. The connectors that must be disconnected are very fragile. The video does not provide enough caution and PRECISE info to successfully remove the fan and temp sensor from the connectors on the circuit board. I've been electronics all my life and pulled both connectors off the circuit board. It took a microscope and hot gas bonder to get the mini working again - and thats with the fan running at a fixed speed. The average person would never have been able to carry out this repair.

Rating: 5/5 Great upgrade November 8, 2016 My late 08 MacBook was getting pretty tired so I decided to do something really scary (for me) and upgrade to a SSD. The ordering and delivery was very easy and despite my fears the install went off without a hitch, too. I had one little (as it turned out) question and tech services sped me through it without a single hitch. I can't say enough to praise this company and the people who make things happen. My new SSD has been running for 2 months now without issues and I'm really glad I took the step.

Rating: 5/5 Easy and useful upgrade November 6, 2016 I only installed this drive yesterday (mid-2009 Macbook Pro), so time will tell on longevity, but so far, so good. I also purchased a SATA dock so that I could clone my drive before installation (I didn't want to go through the installation only to figure out that something wasn't going to work). After cloning the drive I booted to it while it was still in the dock, and I could already see a speed improvement. Then, following along with the installation video here on Macsales, I had the installation done in about 15 minutes. Everything seems to be working perfectly -- Lightroom and Final Cut Pro X both open much faster than they did before, and I increased my storage from 256GB to 480GB in the process. Thanks for a great product and for great support!

Rating: 5/5 Inexpensive Mini Rejuvenation November 5, 2016 This 240 3G SSD kit was an excellent and inexpensive way to give my old 2009 Mac Mini a few more years of quality life. (With any luck it will satisfy me until Apple finally upgrades the Mini again.) The difference in performance is stunning. The enclosure to convert the old drive into a portable HD was a nice bonus. The kit was easy to install and the video instructions very clear. The Torx and Philips screwdrivers included in the provided tool kit looked a bit cheesy, but they probably would have been adequate. I don't know for sure- I used my own tools. The necessary putty knife was not included, so be sure to have a suitable one on hand. It needs to have a thin but strong blade; don't buy a dollar store model.

Rating: 5/5 Amazing Products with Easy to Read Instructions! October 30, 2016 I cannot be happier with my 1.0TB SSD I purchased from OWC for my six year old MacBook Pro. It literally transformed my computer after having slowed down considerably after all these years of use. I simply cannot be happier with my purchase! Overall, the experience was excellent and I recommend OWC to anyone wanting to upgrade a Mac.
