Upgrade/Replace your internal drive
The Drive and Tools you need to Upgrade/Replace the existing 2.5" Drive in your laptop, Mac mini, Xbox, PS3, etc + make the drive being replaced an External for data transfer, backup, and/or additional portable storage.

Everything you need in one package, immediately ready to assemble and:
  • Backup and store your data with style and confidence.
  • Take your data with you - small enough to keep in a pocket!
  • Easily add additional laptop storage with no AC adapter required.
Examples of how this bus-powered Express bundle can be used in real world situations:

Power Users / Travelers: Relocate your "home folder" to your Express and have your files with you at home, at work or on the road without the need to synchronize your machines.

Laptop Owners: Clone your current internal SATA hard drive in your laptop to the new drive. Then install the new, larger drive in your laptop and keep the smaller drive in your Express for additional storage space.

iTunes Aficionados: Keep a copy of your iTunes library on your external drive to play on multiple machines.

Gamers: Add additional storage to your XBox 360 or PS3 game console to store music, media, and other downloads. PS3 even includes a backup utility to protect your internal drive's data.

For Everyone: Have the piece of mind of a complete backup plan. Create a bootable clone of your hard drive at regular intervals so if your computer goes down, your productivity doesn't go down with it. Boot to another computer and keep on working!

Release Candidate (RC) firmware set

There are two kinds of firmware for SSDs Mass Production (MP) and Release Candidate (RC). Prior to an MP firmware release, there are beta firmware releases and an RC firmware release. Often, the RC is the same as the MP release, however there can be small changes and bug fixes made between the two. OWC has evaluated the RC for the 6Gb/s SandForce 2281 Processor and found it to be stable with no issues reported during our testing. However, as with any evolutionary product, issues may surface as different usages and configurations are employed and it is important to understand that there will be further updates and revisions.

Since no firmware update is currently offered for the OWC Mercury EXTREME Pro 6G SSD, no update page exists. To see the typical steps involved with a self performed field firmware update, please visit our 3Gb/s product update page at: http://eshop.macsales.com/Customized_Pages/Framework.cfm?page=sf_firmware.html

It is important to note that the current firmware update tool requires the use of Windows XP/Vista/7. OWC is currently working on a Mac OS based update tool, but we do not have an exact availability date.

  2. Temperature reporting is currently an unsupported feature because due to the operating characteristics of SSDs, it is highly unlikely one would ever exceed an OWC Mercury SSD's stated operating temperature ceiling of 158F/70C. However, we are looking into supporting this feature in the future via a firmware update. Firmware updates can be found here: http://eshop.macsales.com/tech_center/OWC/SSD.

Rating: 5/5 Great speed up November 8, 2016 The end result is a great speed increase. However this is not for the amateur. The connectors that must be disconnected are very fragile. The video does not provide enough caution and PRECISE info to successfully remove the fan and temp sensor from the connectors on the circuit board. I've been electronics all my life and pulled both connectors off the circuit board. It took a microscope and hot gas bonder to get the mini working again - and thats with the fan running at a fixed speed. The average person would never have been able to carry out this repair.

Rating: 5/5 Great upgrade November 8, 2016 My late 08 MacBook was getting pretty tired so I decided to do something really scary (for me) and upgrade to a SSD. The ordering and delivery was very easy and despite my fears the install went off without a hitch, too. I had one little (as it turned out) question and tech services sped me through it without a single hitch. I can't say enough to praise this company and the people who make things happen. My new SSD has been running for 2 months now without issues and I'm really glad I took the step.

Rating: 5/5 Easy and useful upgrade November 6, 2016 I only installed this drive yesterday (mid-2009 Macbook Pro), so time will tell on longevity, but so far, so good. I also purchased a SATA dock so that I could clone my drive before installation (I didn't want to go through the installation only to figure out that something wasn't going to work). After cloning the drive I booted to it while it was still in the dock, and I could already see a speed improvement. Then, following along with the installation video here on Macsales, I had the installation done in about 15 minutes. Everything seems to be working perfectly -- Lightroom and Final Cut Pro X both open much faster than they did before, and I increased my storage from 256GB to 480GB in the process. Thanks for a great product and for great support!

Rating: 5/5 Inexpensive Mini Rejuvenation November 5, 2016 This 240 3G SSD kit was an excellent and inexpensive way to give my old 2009 Mac Mini a few more years of quality life. (With any luck it will satisfy me until Apple finally upgrades the Mini again.) The difference in performance is stunning. The enclosure to convert the old drive into a portable HD was a nice bonus. The kit was easy to install and the video instructions very clear. The Torx and Philips screwdrivers included in the provided tool kit looked a bit cheesy, but they probably would have been adequate. I don't know for sure- I used my own tools. The necessary putty knife was not included, so be sure to have a suitable one on hand. It needs to have a thin but strong blade; don't buy a dollar store model.

Rating: 5/5 Amazing Products with Easy to Read Instructions! October 30, 2016 I cannot be happier with my 1.0TB SSD I purchased from OWC for my six year old MacBook Pro. It literally transformed my computer after having slowed down considerably after all these years of use. I simply cannot be happier with my purchase! Oh, and the instructions to install were a breeze, OWC is there with you every step of the way!

The installation took just 10 minutes and all data transferred to the new drive without a hitch. The installation and data transfer videos and instructions were clear and helpful. Overall, the experience was excellent and I recommend OWC to anyone wanting to upgrade a Mac.

Rating: 5/5 Installed SSD in Mid 2009 MacBook Pro October 23, 2016 Easy to follow instructions for installation and transfer of data from old hard drive to new SSD. Big improvement in performance. A worthwhile expense for such an improvement in performance.

This is the first hard drive replacement I have done and other than taking a long time to reload the operating system and transfer data, it was easy.

Rating: 5/5 New life for an old notebook October 2, 2016 I debated doing this for a long time. Now I wish I'd done it sooner! I upgraded the HD to the 7200rpm 512Gb when I bought my MacBook Pro in mid-2010 and I was glad for the extra speed. However, as I filled the disk up even defragmenting was just not helping performance enough. Getting a new system was not an option since 17" MacBook Pro's are no longer made. So I decided to get the 1Tb SSD when I replaced the aging battery. WOW! Who needs a faster CPU? The system boots in well under a minute and everything starts noticeably faster! This is the least expensive way to get a new Mac!!

Rating: 5/5 SSD Hard Drive September 22, 2016 Purchased a 480G SSD hard drive and my MacBook Pro is better now than it was when it was brand new. Took less than twenty minutes to install the hard drive and the 8G of new memory.

Rating: 5/5 Makes your machine like new for a fraction of the cost! September 22, 2016 Purchasing this SSD drive, as well as 16GB of RAM, made my machine like new again! Extremely easy install. If your old hard drive works, purchase the USB tray and keep that in there as a backup drive.

HELPFUL TIP: My optic drive died years ago and there wasn't a need to keep it in the machine anymore. I took it out when I swapped out the drives. The tech at the genius bar recommended this to me, saying it helps to speed things up even more since it's not looking for the optic drive.

Rating: 5/5 Speed Demon September 19, 2016 Installing the OWC drive was simple in my Macbook Pro and the speed difference was excellent. Make sure that you use a good copy program from your original disk to the SSD so that it copies everything. I saved the laptop hard drive on an external enclosure, but have not had to use it for anything. I'll probably convert it to a time machine drive.

Rating: 5/5 Terrific September 11, 2016 I upgraded my memory from the original 2 gigs to 6 gigs (which OWC was the only source that said it would work, and it helped --maybe a 30% improvement in speed, i then put the SSD in and the results were AMAZING. It reduced start up time from more than 3 minutes to about 30-40 seconds. It (2008 MacBook Pro) is barely slower than my 2015 MacBook Pro which has 16 gigs of RAM. If I had known of the improvement, I would not have bought the 2015 model

Rating: 5/5 Great product - great installation videos September 9, 2016 Installed this SSD in my wife's MacBook Pro and it significantly increased the performance. Product is of high quality and price very competitive.

Besides the quality/price, OWC's library of installation videos are FANTASTIC. Made opening the laptop, removing the HD, installing the SSD and tranferring the files from the HD to the SSD quite straight forward.

Rating: 5/5 Saved September 6, 2016 Original Hard Drive died; new one was a cinch to install and having the ability to download a version of MacOS to create a bootable thumb drive and load to the new hard drive made it easy.

Rating: 5/5 New life! September 2, 2016 I bought it for my Macbook late 2009.. Installation is really easy but backup and transferring were a little bit tough tho, cause it took a lot of time but it's all done now. And it seems like I have brand new laptop (I also bought new battery and memory 8gb)! With all the instruction "how to change", that was easy to do everything. I hope everything is going to work well and for long time! Thank you!

Rating: 5/5 You saved my MBP~! September 1, 2016 I upgrade my very old macbook pro early 2008 to new ssd. From the shipping and asking questions, everything was awesome. The most impressive thing is absolute the speed of mac. Although I'm a light user, It had a problem with jamming frequently. Now it is flying away. I'm really satisfied with the ssd and OWC.

Rating: 5/5 Excellent! August 5, 2016 I purchased row 1TB internal SSD drive plus enclosure for the old one. The video instructions were simple and extremely easy to follow, and the entire conversion took less than 30 minutes for a non-techie. I have an older (late 2008) MBP and the new drive has significantly improved both read and write speeds. Plus for around $20 I now have another drive to use for Time Machine backups. All in all, an excellent deal that I'm sure will last at least five-seven years.

Rating: 5/5 Wow. Great revitalization of my MacBook 6.1 August 3, 2016 MacBook 6.1 Installed new OWC SSD and 8G of RAM using supplied kit. Sales, cost, support, instructions, installation: all easy, efficient, and inexpensive. Before my Mac was slow, slow. Now zippy with this upgrade. One RAM module was defective, but replaced easily and quickly. (MAc was already then zippy with 5G RAM (4 + 1) while I waited for full 8G (4 + 4). And also: now I have a backup drive with my old HHD.

Rating: 5/5 Easy and effective July 31, 2016 I upgraded my mid-2009 Macbook Pro from its original 250 Gb hard drive to a 1 Tb SSD. Not only do I have more storage capacity, my computer also runs much faster! For less than $350, I am getting a highly-improved user experience, and will get a longer lifespan out of my computer. Very glad I made the purchase, and the installation kit was well worth the few extra dollars that MacSales.com charged for it!
