Release Candidate (RC) firmware set

There are two kinds of firmware for SSDs Mass Production (MP) and Release Candidate (RC). Prior to an MP firmware release, there are beta firmware releases and an RC firmware release. Often, the RC is the same as the MP release, however there can be small changes and bug fixes made between the two. OWC has evaluated the RC for the 6Gb/s SandForce 2281 Processor and found it to be stable with no issues reported during our testing. However, as with any evolutionary product, issues may surface as different usages and configurations are employed and it is important to understand that there will be further updates and revisions.

Since no firmware update is currently offered for the OWC Mercury EXTREME Pro 6G SSD, no update page exists. To see the typical steps involved with a self performed field firmware update, please visit our 3Gb/s product update page at: http://eshop.macsales.com/Customized_Pages/Framework.cfm?page=sf_firmware.html

It is important to note that the current firmware update tool requires the use of Windows XP/Vista/7. OWC is currently working on a Mac OS based update tool, but we do not have an exact availability date.

  1. 1GB = 1,000,000,000 bytes. Total accessible capacity varies depending upon operating environment (typically 5-10% less). The actual total capacity will depend on your own defined file settings/preferences.
  2. Temperature reporting is currently an unsupported feature because due to the operating characteristics of SSDs, it is highly unlikely one would ever exceed an OWC Mercury SSD's stated operating temperature ceiling of 158F/70C. However, we are looking into supporting this feature in the future via a firmware update. Firmware updates can be found here: http://eshop.macsales.com/tech_center/OWC/SSD.

Rating: 5/5 Words are not enough July 11, 2016 I am extremely happy with my purchase. It arrived on good time, and it was a great upgrade to my mac. I have a MacBook Pro 13 inch non-retina from mid 2012. It was not the most powerful machine and it was starting to slow down 'cause of all he new features being added to mac os x. But with this SSD upgrade plus a little RAM upgrade too, the machine flies now. Boot up time was reduced from 1 minute 25 seconds to only 17 seconds. Apps open instantly, everything feels smoother and the mac feels lighter in weight as well.

The external HD enclosure is super light and works great too. And it looks just like an accessory made specifically for the Mac.

Rating: 5/5 Awesome experience, all worked flawlessly July 9, 2016 I bought an OWC 240GB Mercury SSD as replacement for the HDD of my MacBookPro. I did all the work using only my MacBook and the contents of the box OWC sent me. All worked like a clockwork: the shipping, box, components, tools, manuals, instruction videos, I am very, very impressed, highly recommended. Now the laptop works faster, like one order of magnitud, no overheating, no fan noise and the old HDD is my backup external disk. Now I am working on installing more RAM memory using their kit.

Rating: 4/5 SSD working well July 6, 2016 Definite speed upgrade. Easy to switch using CCC. I have been satisfied with previous tool sets. This tool set not as good as the magnetic properties were very weak making it difficult to remove/reset the screws.

Rating: 4/5 Very good product. July 5, 2016 I am new to using Macs. Purchased my late 2008 MacBook Pro in early 2016 and upgraded the RAM from 4 GB to 8GB. Then I ordered an SSD HD that boosted storage from 250 GB to 480GB. OWC articles on these upgrade were excellent resource. My only issue with the order was in the long wait for delivery to Canada. I know next time to use a courier rather than USPS/Canada Post.

Rating: 3/5 SSD Drive for 17" MacBook Pro June 27, 2016 It seems to work now that I have installed my second one. My first one installed fine and after about one hour it failed and I could not recover it. My MacBook is an older model and it takes a lot of work to disassemble to remove the drive and doing it twice wasn't what I was looking forward to. It also required me to take it out and return it before they would send me another drive rendering my laptop useless of about aa week. Not happy about that either.

Rating: 5/5 Really fast, and a cinch to install June 16, 2016 I wanted to upgrade a 2009 MacBook Pro 13" for speed and capacity. This 480 gb SSD drive fit the bill perfectly: really easy to install (using OWC's online videos), and I put the original internal drive into the OWC drive enclosure kit as an extra external backup destination. No problems at all so far: the MBP starts up really quickly, and the large capacity is really welcome.

Rating: 5/5 Easy to upgrade & worked perfectly June 13, 2016 The OWC instructions to replace a spinning HD with a SSD drive for a 2009 MacBook Pro were clear and easy to follow. In 10 minutes, I had a better computer. Thanks!

Rating: 5/5 A worthwhile 20 minute upgrade June 10, 2016 The 15" MacBook Pro (MBP) I am presently using to write this review once had a conventional 240GB HDD installed in it. The 240GB HDD was a standard fitment. I use the MBP for many hours each day and the HDD slowly began to fill up. I found myself with less and less HDD space until my MBP started to generate warning messages indicating that I had <10% HDD space available. These messages became annoying.

The obvious solution was to install a higher capacity HDD. 480GB/500GB were my most cost effective options. However, with falling SSD prices I decided not only to double the capacity of my internal drive but also go solid-state (SSD) and increase the overall performance of my MBP. It should be quieter and use less power too.

A 240GB HDD is much too valuable to just throw away so I purchased a USB 2.0 enclosure from OWC and created a new 240GB external HDD. The kit included the necessary tools to assist me with the upgrade, which I performed in around 20 minutes after I had familiarised myself with the upgrade procedure by viewing the appropriate OWC video. I have previously performed similar upgrades so knew what steps were required.

I encountered no problems whatsoever and the frequent warning messages I was receiving ceased immediately. I am now using about 50% of the SSDs capacity.

I kept the HDD, now with a USB 2.0 interface, as a backup because it contains a complete and working copy of El Capitan upon it.

I have not regretted the upgrade for one minute and I would recommend it to anyone who has found themselves running low on HDD capacity.

Rating: 5/5 Must have upgrade May 20, 2016 My MacBook Pro was taking us much as five minutes to start up. Now, after installing the SSD it starts in a manner of seconds. I did the install from my Time Machine back up. Installing the drive was straightforward and only took a few minutes to complete. While I was at it I installed a new battery at the same time. I have doubled the capacity of my storage and extended battery life significantly.

Rating: 5/5 Extremely Happy May 17, 2016 with the product. Wanted to upgrade my MacBook Pro (circa late 2008) and this SSD drive has done just that. Startup is a breeze and apps open very very quickly. Has definitely breathed new life into this aging product and given me a little more time before I need to upgrade. The videos on how to install were very informative and helpful. Awesome product.

Rating: 5/5 Revived My 2008 MacBook Pro May 10, 2016 This was easily one of the best purchases I have ever made. The new SSD drive upgrade along with the enclosure kit allowed me to bring life back to my old MacBook Pro. I was once aggravated with the spinning wheel and 5 minute boot up times, but now it boots up in less than 15 seconds. Also, this was a cheaper alternative than purchasing a new computer. I highly recommend this upgrade before you issue out thousands of dollars purchasing a new mac. Thanks OWC!!!!

Rating: 5/5 Good price, easy to install, runs fast! May 8, 2016 With the tool kit and USB enclosure, this is an affordable, easy to install, super fast SSD. Their videos and data transfer instructions are very helpful. I love how fast our 2008 MacBook Pro starts up now. Applications open very quickly. New life for this old Mac. Got so tired of it being so slow, but now I'll keep it a couple years longer mostly for my kids to use.

Rating: 5/5 WOW! May 1, 2016 Never thought I could change my own hard drive -- your videos were fabulous! I just installed the OWC Mercury Electra 3G 480GB in my wife's old 2008 MacbookPro. It had been so slow and was tired of the spinning wheel between web pages download. After installing the new SSD drive, I put the old hard drive with the included case and connected the old drive via USB port. Tried using Migration Assistant to transfer my files to my new SSD -- after a hour of doing nothing, I went online and used the Carbon Copy Cloner for the Mac and downloaded it free. Took about 4 hours to transfer the information to my new drive. Rebooted -- WOW, this computer is so much faster. It is better than NEW! Can't wait to help my friends update their MacBook Pros and even update my own iMac. Thank you OWC!

Rating: 5/5 It runs like a new Mac Mini April 21, 2016 Since I have two iMac now the Mac Mini mid 2010 ended up in the closet because it was painfully slow, but I could bring myself to dispose of it. When I learned of OWC and I knew that I needed to come up with a computer for my dad to use I decided to up grade the memory and dive to an SSD. The up grade of the memory to 16 GB and the SSD drive made it like a new Mac Mini at a fraction of the cost. Boot up time cut in half from 100 sec. to 50 sec. and apps launch lightning fast. I'm very pleased so my mid 2010 iMac is next.
