HD Video Certified

RAID 0 Performance Stripe
Both drives are combined together to create a single drive volume that's much faster and provides larger capacity.

RAID 1 Mirror
Both drives are used to write two "mirrored" copies of your data at the same time to provide an instant backup copy of your data.

NRAID (Span)
Creates a larger drive by combining the capacity of two or more drives of the same or varying sizes into a larger drive volume.

Independent Mode (JBOD)
Available as an option via USB and FireWire connections, this mode lets you access each drive as an independent volume. This mode is like having two separate drives connected to your computer.

Rating: 5/5 The enclosure works, no problems or work arounds November 3, 2013 I was using two Toshiba Canvio 3.0 750GB Portable USB hard drives with OSX's software mirror RAID to hold my iTunes Library on my 2009 Mini. They worked, but the USB 2.0 interface was slow and the drives were always going to sleep. Every time I tried to access my library on my Apple TV, it would hang the Apple TV and Mini, until both drives had woken back up. I backed up the soft RAID drive to my iMac, and put each drive into the Mercury enclosure, set the RAID option and formatted. I used super duper to restore the data and haven't had an issue since. You know, its kinda nice when the stuff you buy actually does what it is advertised to do. I intend to buy another one for my iPhoto library. The only thing that would make this enclosure better would be USB 3.0; but at this price, its not that important to me.

Rating: 5/5 Excellent product June 23, 2013 I am using two of these enclosures connected via eSATA to a LaCie Thunderbolt Hub. One has a pair of 1 TB hard drives in RAID 1 (redundant mirror), and one has a pair of 120GB SSDs in RAID 0 (striped) to form a fast 240GB drive. In eSATA mode each drive needs its own 12V power supply - I used existing supplies I had from older disk drives. OWC helpfully supply a short eSATA cable with each enclosure.

The LaCie hub allows for daisy-chaining another Thunderbolt connection. I use this to drive an Eizo monitor via its DisplayPort input. So, one Thunderbolt cable into the computer and the external drives and display are all connected!

A minor note: while the enclosure can be configured as two single drives, only one is visible to the computer when used with eSATA via the LaCie hub. I believe this is a limitation of the hub, as when connected by Firewire, both drives in the enclosure are visible. At any rate, for use with the LaCie Thunderbolt Hub, the enclosure needs to be set to Spanning, RAID0, or RAID1.

A second minor note: although advertised as "near silent fanless operation", this applies to the enclosure itself. With two hard drives loaded (and spinning), the drives themselves are quite audible in a quiet room.

Summary: an excellent and versatile product indeed. The only "wish" for a future version of this product would be to drop the Firewire 400 port and update the USB port to USB3.0.

Rating: 4/5 Very nice product March 7, 2013 Well constructed and elegant. If daisy-chaining Firewire 400/800 connections, the optional power supply OWCMEP2BAYM15 is highly recommended, especially if more than one bus powered device will be used along the chain.

A minor nit-pick is that the LED cables could be moved so as not to interfere with the drive being seated in one of the bays.

Rating: 5/5 An outstanding eSATA SSD solution October 3, 2012 I am using this enclosure with a pair of OWC Mercury Electra 6G 120GB SSDs in a RAID0 configuration as the boot device for my Early 2008 Mac Pro via eSATA (via the Newer Technology eSATA extender cable adapter, which also serves a Time Machine disk). This enclosure is well-constructed, amazingly fast, and unbelievably easy to set up. There is nothing special or quirky about putting it together - just select a desired disk config, add disks, plug it in, and go. OS X Mountain Lion recognizes it right out of the gate, and installs to and boots from it as if it were a normal internal SATA drive.

The only caveat is that the included FW800-to-Power cable is too short to reach from the rear FW port on the Mac Pro to the top of the case where I put the enclosure. I elected to also purchase the optional AC adapter, but it would be better if a longer cable were included. Overall though, this is an outstanding product and I highly recommend it!
