I bought it for a clone backup, and I've got a few other drives like this one (all less than 1 TB, though). Never a failure, just a great little backup drive and I'm 100% satisfied with this line. It fits perfectly in my bank safe deposit box, also can be carried with me when necessary. Very small footprint. My favorite backup drive.

Rating: 5/5 Best external backup drive for a MacBook Pro November 3, 2015 I have used these Mercury On-the-Go enclosures for many, many years and have owned about six of them. I continuously upgraded as new / different bus connections became available. Not a single one ever gave me a problem. Easy to upgrade the drives inside as you upgrade the capacity of your laptop. Fast enough for backups or even booting if necessary. I use these to clone my internal drives and tend to use the FireWire 800 port. They get warm during longer (45m) backups, but that's what the heat sink is for, and they never get super hot. You can rely on them. Has a power switch if you want to keep them plugged in but off. Bus powered, so no need for external power. Small, light, and durable enough to keep in a backpack or laptop bag. Only gripe is that you may not like the small blue light on the controller board. It is not annoying, I prefer it, but it does exist and may annoy you if you are Donny Darko.

I thought this would be the ideal backup drive for my older iMac which has FW400 but not FW800. I would have ordered a converter if it were more obvious.

Customer service at OWC is great. They are knowledgeable. You speak with someone in the U.S. Shipping was the same day as order.

The software is great to use, if choose not to use time machine.

I will be ordering more for both my plastic windows OS and my favorite aluminum MAC OSX. Three year warranty is outstanding.

Rating: 5/5 Wicked cool. May 11, 2011 I've used this drive as a solid work drive for some 2 years now, and I'm still impressed with its look, speed, and dependability. It's a rock solid trooper whose clear plastic case which reveals the 2.5 inch drive still looks cool to me. Call me a geek but I still like seeing the insides of electronics. It's definitely a unique looking drive.

Portable with fw800 speed is one heckuva combo, and using it to create much of what you see on the owc web site, email, and more is proof positive this is a solid drive for work and play.
