Rating: 5/5 PERFECT FIX !!! March 3, 2016 The product was perfect and the installation video made it easy...easy...easy. There is nothing scarier than popping open a laptop but the OWC videos are clear, easy follow, and exact. My Air is running like new. Thanks!

Rating: 4/5 Speedy replacement hard drive August 28, 2015 This is a great kit that includes SSD hard drive, install tool, and case with connector for old hard drive. Instructions are easy and installation took 30 mins. The only issue is the ribbon cable used to connect the old hard drive into the housing is too thick. It took me a long time to jam this cable into the hard drive connect and make it work. I've done a lot of OWC installations over the years and this the first time something didn't fit properly. The 120 GB SSD is a great upgrade from the standard 80 GB HD from Apple.

Rating: 5/5 Great Value for the Price October 21, 2014 The information provided by OWC was precise so that I selected the correct SSD for my MacBook Air and extremely informative, clear and therefore helped me avoid a mistake and ordering an incorrect SSD. Installation was straightforward and the result was astonishing, my MacBook Air 2008 is now loading and accessing applications with little delay that were so slow. Also the "spinning ball" is now virtually non-existent. Highly recommend purchasing a OWC SSD to give your Mac new lease of life.

Rating: 5/5 Great product, great company, great services April 23, 2013 I've ordered this SSD unit for me beloved MacBook Air (early) 2008 initially with some doubts, after a previous failed attempt to replace the original old HDD with a relatively cheap SSD. The Tech Support Department reassured me that the OWC 120GB PATA ZIF SSD is fully compatible with my computer. I've ordered it Friday, April 19 and I've received it today, April 23 in Targu-Jiu, a small town somewhere in Romania (Eastern Europe), which is a true record for a long distance shipment. This morning I've installed it following the precise video instructions available on OWC's website and now I can say that my MBA is better than new. Thank you very much for all !

Rating: 5/5 Excellent product, excellent service April 4, 2013 I received the ordered product within 3 days here in the Netherlands (thanks to FEDEX). This in an excellent condition. The SSD was intended as a replacement for the crashed hard disk in my early 2008 Macbook Air1,1

This SSD PATA ZIF (quite rare) disk, arrived in a box which also contained a philips screwdriver, a high quality matt black OWC case, a pouch with philips screws, an internal ZIF connection cable (using this case, the old or new disk can be placed in the case and used as an external disk) and an external USB cable.

My old 80GHDD (which failed various tests, caused software crashes and failed new iOS installations) appeared to have a mechanical failure, metallic 'ticking' was heard in the weeks before the final 'crash' occurred. In the end it was not accessible anymore and it failed the S.M.A.R.T. tests. After I installed the new 60G Solid State Drive and a new MAC OS X Lion software installation, everything worked perfect again.

Then, just for fun, I placed the old HDD drive in the case to see if I could get it up and running again. To my big surprise, it functioned without any problems! It passed all tests and was fully accessible again. So now I have a perfectly working Macbook Air again and a smoothly running external 80Gb HDD again :-)

Thanks OWC!

Rating: 5/5 Dramatic Difference January 3, 2013 My original HDD was showing as "FAILING" on the S.M.A.R.T. tag but hadn't totally failed yet. I ordered this drive and was able to change the HDD to SSD myself using the included tool and referencing the HOWTO link supplied on the OWC site. 20 minutes and the drive was replaced, no surprises totally happy with the overall experience, help identifying the proper drive, placing the order then install help that was bang on. Good job.

Rating: 4/5 Definitely recommend January 2, 2013 My wife's Air 1,1 which she DEARLY loves was beginning to have a problem with corrupted files and bad blocks, but the machine was otherwise in near perfect condition and we didn't really want to spend what a new one costs. I'm a long-time OWC customer so I knew they had this little gem & after watching the OWC installation video a couple of times, I was reasonably sure I could do the transplant. I also had some hope of a performance improvement. This drive is only about 10% of a new Air's price so the gamble seemed worthwhile.

Long story made short, the drive arrived about 3pm, along with the OWC toolkit (well worth $15!), & I had the drive installed and the Air booting from it for the first time before 5pm! You need good lighting unless your eyesight is a lot better than mine, the right tools, a steady hand, some patience (DO NOT RUSH - allow an uninterrupted hour), and a way to watch the install video (or a really good memory) while you do the work. With that, anyone who can operate a screwdriver can do the physical installation.

OWC seems to skip over the software part of the install, but I recommend a good external USB drive, SuperDuper from Shirt Pocket Software for cloning, and Apple's Disk Utility and Migration Assistant.

Once complete, works perfect - faster than new right now actually, but we will see what happens as the drive fills up (SSDs are somewhat sensitive to amount of data stored).Would be 5-stars, but minus one for not giving the the option to buy the drive without the external enclosure and cheesy little screwdriver which is no good to me since my original drive is failing.

Response from MacSales.com, Marketing January 3, 2013 The video doesn't skip over the software part of the installation. At 0:39 it states... One Last Note... It is recommended that you transfer your data to an external drive prior to installation. For instructions on how to do this, please visit our Web site: www.macsales.com/sparedrive

Rating: 5/5 Easy to install thanks to the videos August 3, 2012 The most complicated thing I'd done to my Macs on the hardware side before this was add memory, but my 1st gen MBA was unusable with the original hard drive getting too unreliable, so it was worth the risk.

The videos are the key to success, imo! I watched them through twice before purchasing, then twice again after I had everything set up to start. I played it on my MacBook Pro as I went along, pausing at each step. No problems anywhere. I was done in about fifteen minutes.

Since I already had a SuperDrive, I just plugged that in and slipped in the Snow Leopard disk (decided to roll back to SL after Lion made the MBA unhappy), formatted the SSD, then installed a fresh install of SL.

I put a couple of apps on it that I want to use and left off all the other detritus that had accumulated over the four+ years I'd owned it. Now it's a sweet (and faster!) machine again.

(Note that I had to track down the video for inserting the old HD into the provided case. A search on ZIF on YouTube brought up the OWC video. The tiny screws took up the most time.)

Also note: Buy the nylon pry tool if you don't have one (it's indispensible). And the included screw driver was flawed and didn't work, but I'd ordered a small tool kit with the SSD and was fine.

Rating: 4/5 My Air Rev A for work March 4, 2012 I usually just use my Air Rev A just for presentations for work. But after 10.7 the system just lagged with every task. I was either going to sell the air or try the owc ssd. I got the 60 gig and grabbed a tiny jewelers phillips and decided to try. Originally I was going to put the new ssd in the external enclosure and copy the original before I installed it. The air could not detect the new drive. So I went ahead and installed the new empty ssd and pulled the original. I then put the original in the external and still no detection (when I tried to boot to external - holding 'option'). Rechecked the ZIF cable and it was upside down on the drive side. Flipped it and it booted to it. I then copied over to the new ssd.

Now the air is faster than new. Everything opens snappy even battery life is improved. I just use the old drive for time machine. And since it's a smaller drive, I limit what I save on it but there is still enough space for whatever.

Seriously recommend grabbing one of these drives if you are frustrated with the speed of your original air like I was. Double the speed? Maybe even tripple it!

Rating: 5/5 Fantastic Product - Easy install February 8, 2012 I had the original Air and I was really considering selling it as the original 4200 RPM drive was getting harder and harder to work with. In doing a little research I came across this product and I'm back using my beloved air. I don't do much intensive tasks and the upgrade has made my air a great companion on short trips again. Now if OWC could do something about the video card on this I'm sure I could keep it even longer.

Rating: 5/5 Great improvement for MacBook Air! February 2, 2012 Having an original MacBook Air for 3 years now, it was getting a bit old and slow. When my hard drive crashed, I decided to go with SSD. Installing the drive was easy using the instructions on YouTube. The speed improvement is great. It's most noticeable when I open or switch between applications and when the time machine backups are running. With the old drive, these would slow everything down for minutes. Now, it's only a few seconds!

Rating: 5/5 Great Improvement for my 2008 MacBook Air September 19, 2011 I recently upgraded my early 2008 MacBook Air with a new OWC Mercury ZIF 120 GB SSD. I replaced the stock 80 GB, 4200 rpm drive. Installation was straighforward but required a little extra research on the web. I now have about 60 GB of free space instead of 10 GB. Booting time is fast. Opening applications is fast. Running Lion on my MBA is now a pleasure. I have been running my upgraded MBA for three days and the improvement is startling. I recommend this product.

Rating: 5/5 Not what I had planed but still good September 3, 2011 I purchased this for the first generation MacBook Air. I love the packaging and that the product came with an enclosure for the original hard drive.

I was not happy when I found that there were no installation instructions with it nor was i able to find them on the support pages. I managed to get it installed on my own without too much guess work.

There also were no instructions for the assembly of the enclosure either. Normally these things are pretty obvious but with this one there were two adhesive foam pads that I wasn't quite sure what to do with.

After my experience I would buy this product again knowing that I would not miss the installation instructions.

I would also like to point out that the instructions for the next gen MBA were missing a recommended step of disconnecting the battery before starting to remove the original HD. This could cause a problem in some cases.
