Release Candidate (RC) firmware set

There are two kinds of firmware for SSDs Mass Production (MP) and Release Candidate (RC). Prior to an MP firmware release, there are beta firmware releases and an RC firmware release. Often, the RC is the same as the MP release, however there can be small changes and bug fixes made between the two. OWC has evaluated the RC for the 6Gb/s SandForce 2281 Processor and found it to be stable with no issues reported during our testing. However, as with any evolutionary product, issues may surface as different usages and configurations are employed and it is important to understand that there will be further updates and revisions.

Since no firmware update is currently offered for the OWC Mercury EXTREME Pro 6G SSD, no update page exists. To see the typical steps involved with a self performed field firmware update, please visit our 3Gb/s product update page at: http://eshop.macsales.com/Customized_Pages/Framework.cfm?page=sf_firmware.html

It is important to note that the current firmware update tool requires the use of Windows XP/Vista/7. OWC is currently working on a Mac OS based update tool, but we do not have an exact availability date.

  1. 1GB = 1,000,000,000 bytes. Total accessible capacity varies depending upon operating environment (typically 5-10% less). The actual total capacity will depend on your own defined file settings/preferences.
  2. In terms of standard gigabytes, 1GiB ≈ 1.074GB and refers to the actual formatted capacity of shown under Mac OS 10.5 or earlier and Microsoft Windows OS.
  3. Specific application environments such as temperature and duty cycle will affect the overall reliability.
  4. Specifications provided by SandForce.
  5. Temperature reporting is currently an unsupported feature because due to the operating characteristics of SSDs, it is highly unlikely one would ever exceed an OWC Mercury SSD's stated operating temperature ceiling of 158F/70C. However, we are looking into supporting this feature in the future via a firmware update. Firmware updates can be found here: http://eshop.macsales.com/tech_center/OWC/SSD.

Rating: 4/5 Works good as an external drive February 24, 2017 I was looking for an SSD that would speed up my Late 2009 Mac Mini. Even with the 266 Ghz processor, things were slowing down and boot-up was too long.

I was not ready to buy a new computer yet. So, I purchased the OWC 480GB Mercury drive.

I didn't want to go inside the computer's case so I just bought an external metal enclosure from OWC and hooked up the drive via the Firewire 800 ports.

It has been a few months, and I can't remember exactly how I transferred the files from my old hard drive to the new SSD. I think I just used Apple's software and a copy of the software on another external hard drive that I use for Time Machine backups only. But everything transferred over without problems.

The performance is quite good. Initial start up is MUCH faster and there is less lag time when opening applications. I realize I would get even faster performance if the drive were internally mounted and I may do that eventually. But for now, it works good enough.

Rating: 5/5 FAST DRIVE February 14, 2017 Although the process of swapping my HDD for an SSD was quite a bit more complex than it was supposed to be, that was largely because I didn't get the kit with the enclosure. If I had, cloning my HDD to the SSD would have been much easier and would have significantly reduced the time necessary to get my laptop running again. Take my advice and get the version that comes with the enclosure and tools. It's only a few dollars more and you get the necessary tools as well as the enclosure, because the drive arrives sans tools. If I hadn't recently replaced my battery with one from OWC, I wouldn't have had the necessary tools to do the job. My only complaint with the actual drive is how easy it is to cross-thread the old positioning posts when installing them in the sides of the new drive

Rating: 5/5 Good Buy February 4, 2017 My 2008 MacBook Pro was on its last leg and I purchased this SSD drive and it brought my MacBook Pro back to life. I went from a four minute boot up time to 30 seconds. Also the technical support from installing the new drive to transferring the data was above reproach.

Rating: 5/5 Awesome SSD to revive my aging macbookpro January 8, 2017 I think everyone knows now that SSD are the way to go but they have always been pretty pricey to get into the large GB family. Finally the large capacity drives have become more affordable and practical. My machine is a 2009 Mackbook Pro which as we know has become pretty old in the technology world however with a retail price of over 2k when new I want to be able to squeeze every bit of usable life out of it. This upgrade should allow this old beast to survive a few more years before needing to be replaced as my main computer. The SSD did the trick and I wish I would have installed on sooner! OWC products are great and always delivery quantity, performance and affordability. I even got an open box drive and enclosure to save a few bucks. I had to look twice to even tell if it was installed or not! It was packaged as good as a new in box item would have been! The free tech support is icing on the cake and almost everything is listed here on the website. It made switching out the drive stupid simple and the data migration article assisted in getting the new drive formatted, OSX installed and data moved. I have used memory, battery's and now a SSD from OWC and everything has always been top notch!

Rating: 5/5 My 2011 13" MacBook Pro Works Better Then Ever! October 28, 2016 For the longest time, I used my late 2011 13" MacBook Pro for myself, but when my wife's computer died, I started sharing the machine with her by creating an additional user login for her. Since that happened (and two OS upgrades) the machine became extremely slow. "Fast User Switching" sometimes would take 3 - 5 minutes. First I tried upgrading the RAM and it had little to no improvement. A coworker suggested updating the hard drive so I went with this drive. I went from a 800MB drive to this 1.0TB drive and now my machine RACES! It is faster then ever and almost as fast as my much newer work laptop. The solid-state drive is amazing! It has extended the life of my machine. My battery life has increased. Applications startup faster and I don't even worry about the next Apple OS upgrade killing my machine. I did the installation myself. It took less then 20 minutes, but you have to have the right tools. It also backed up from the time capsule perfectly. Highly recommend this before you even think about replacing the machine.

Rating: 5/5 Worth the money September 27, 2016 I rebuilt my older Mac Book Pro and now it runs like a champ. I added extra memory and a battery. Using the tool kit I purchased from MacSales made the job so much easier and quicker. From start to finish I was done in less than 20 minutes adding all the new components. Up loading the the software from from start up disk took longer, but I let it run while I was doing something else. I highly recommend this drive and new memory.

Rating: 5/5 MacBook Pro 13 - 7.1 - 2.4Ghz Runs Better Than New Now September 14, 2016 I purchased 16GBs of RAM and the 480 DIY kit with the Electra G3 SSD to update my daughters MacBook Pro 13 - 7.1 - 2.4Ghz which had run out of storage space. She was looking for a new MacBook Pro and now she has it for a fraction of the cost!

Changing out the hardware was exactly as shown in the OWC videos for each piece. It took about 45 minutes to open the laptop, remove the hard drive, place it in the external enclosure, install the new SSD, replace the RAM memory and close everything back up. The laptop came up quickly even with one of the RAM chips not fully seated and I was able to reinstall OS X Lion following the OWC provided instructions for formatting the SSD and system/data migration found on their website. After reviewing the laptop status once the OS was installed and seeing one of the banks of the RAM was not registering, I reopened the laptop and reset the RAM to get all 16 GBs. This was a snap to upgrade and the longest part turned out to be the re-installation of the OS with all the upgrades since my daughter had run out of space and could not download the latest fixes. She now has new life in her 5 year old laptop and it should take her through many years of use going forward.

Having built PCs for myself, I find the effort to match and research parts and memory to motherboards can be a very time consuming task to get things right. Not so with OWC as they have done all that work for you. I am considering further upgrades for external items (RAID, Monitors, Docking Station ...) in the future and will make exclusive use of OWC recommended parts and services. They are a class act!

Rating: 5/5 Easy install, great performance boost September 12, 2016 Instilling this drive is easy to do, and OWC has online videos to walk you through the process. I had recently upgraded the memory in a 2009 MacBook. Performance had improved, but when I replaced the hard drive with this unit, the increase in speed and responsiveness is dramatic. I would highly recommend this upgrade as it will clearly improve the performance of our Mac.

Rating: 5/5 MacBook Pro Solid State Drive Upgrade September 12, 2016 I bought this hard drive to replace the stock hard drive on my very old MacBook Pro 2008 model. My wife purchased a brand new laptop and nobody was using the 2008 one anymore. Since this hard drive was really cheap, I thought I'd give it a go and see if it would breath some new life into the old machine and I could still use it. The old hard drive was experiencing some serious lag and the computer was very, very slow. After I upgraded to the new SSD hard drive, it now works like a dream. Everything is much faster than it used to be. I'm running the same operating system on it too (El Capitan)! I would highly recommend making the upgrade to a SSD hard drive if you have an older machine. The hardest thing about it was getting all of my info on my new blank hard drive. Oh, also, make sure you have a phillips screwdriver (PH00) that is not too pointy, or you might strip the screws.
