Mercury Accelsior E2
PCI Express Solid State Drive

The PCIe SSD drive built for the most demanding needs of video editing and creative professionals.
3 Year OWC SSD Limited Warranty
Boot, Launch, Create, and Save Faster
With its simultaneous internal and external storage performance, the Mercury Accelsior E2 offers the the best combination of speed, capacity, and connectivity available today.

Stop waiting for I/O-intensive apps like Photoshop, Final Cut Pro, or Avid Pro Tools to render, capture or process. Start working faster with near instantaneous boots and app launches. And save your work faster than ever before.

The Accelsior E2 utilizes the PCIe slot in Mac Pros and PC towers, the fastest data interface available, to deliver up to 820MB/s of blistering performance. That's nearly 3x faster than an SSD equipped Mac Pro 3Gb/s drive bay, and well beyond 6Gb/s drive speeds.

When your work is completed, transfer it for backup or archival purposes at speeds up to 600MB/s via the two eSATA expansion ports to any external storage device with an eSATA port.
Boost Server and Gaming Data Speeds
In addition to video-editing and multimedia creation / management deployment, the Accelsior E2 takes servers and gaming to entirely new levels of performance with it's extreme data speeds.

With up to 100,000 IOPS, business-critical applications like online transaction processing databases are given an instant boost. For gamers, Accelsior E2's speed dramatically reduces game level-loading, object streaming, and save times for more playing and less waiting.
And Laptops, Mac mini, & iMac Too...
The Accelsior E2 isn't just for desktop computing. With an external PCIe expansion chassis, such as the OWC Helios, you can enjoy the Accelsior E2's performance benefits with any Thunderbolt port equipped Mac or PC.
Efficient, Reliable, and Upgradeable SSD Blades
Accelsior E2's SandForce Driven™ SSD blades provide a more responsive and productive computing experience with cooler, quieter, and more energy efficient operation compared to standard hard drives. SandForce RAISE™ technology provides RAID-like data redundancy protection and reliability.

And with the future introduction of higher capacity Mercury Accelsior SSD blades, you'll be able to meet expanding storage needs while extending the useful life of your investment.
Easy-to-Install & Robust
Accelsior is as easy-to-install as memory a upgrade, yet robust enough to handle the rigors of pro environments.

This game-changing, high-performance upgrade comes backed by a 3 Year OWC SSD Limited Warranty.

Add Up to 32TB Externally
with Two eSATA Expansion Ports
In addition to the ultimate SSD upgrade, the Accelsior E2 adds two eSATA storage expansion interfaces to any Mac Pro. Achieve faster than internal drive speeds with up to 600MB/s performance per drive. That's a whopping 6x faster than the fastest stock Mac Pro external interface of FireWire 800 with up to 100MB/s data rates.
RAID or Single Drives,
The Choice is Yours
A variety of single and multi-drive RAID solutions can be connected via Accelsior E2's two eSATA expansion ports. You can also create a RAID array with Apple's Disk Utility, SoftRAID, or various software RAID applications for PCs.

Includes

Note about compatibility and throughput:
  • Compatibility:
    • Compatible with all eSATA equipped storage solutions.
  • PC Throughput:
    • PCIe 2.0 x4 slot or better is required. Use of a PCIe 1.0 x4 slot will reduce performance.
  • Mac Pro Throughput:
    • 2009-2010 Mac Pro. Installing Accelsior into any open x4 or x16 PCIe 2.0 slot will deliver full throughput up to 785MB/s.
    • 2008 Mac Pro. These models have two x16 PCIe 2.0 slots, which enable Acceslsior E2 to deliver full throughput up to 785MB/s. Installing Accelsior E2 into of the two x4 PCIe 1.0 slots will result in Accelsior E2 being addressed as a gen one, one-lane card with performance limited to real world 190-200MB/s data rates.
    • 2006-2007 Mac Pro. These models utilize PCIe 1.0 slot which cannot be configured (even with the Expansion Utility in OS X) to address Accelsior E2 as anything but as a first generation one-lane card. As a result, Accelsior_E2 performance will be limited to 190-200MB/s data rates. If maximum data rate speed up to 285MB/s is desired, we recommend the installation of a 2.5" OWC Mercury SSD in an open Mac Pro drive bay.
  • eSATA Expansion Ports:
    • Compatible with all eSATA equipped storage solutions.*
    • A sleep conflict may be encountered when using certain eSATA chipsets via the eSATA ports when booted to the Accelsior E2. See the specifications tab for affected solutions where System Sleep mode MUST be disabled in order to ensure reliable operation. Allowing system sleep to occur while one of the affected external drives is connected via the Accelsior E2 eSATA ports could result in loss of data following wake from sleep. Although the above are our general recommendations for use, wake from sleep has been determined to only be an issue when the Accelsior E2 is used for startup (SSD or eSATA connected device). We are working with our partners to see that the sleep/wake function is fully supported with all solutions and startup scenarios.
  • Dual Card Use/Booting:
    • Dual Accelsior_E2 Usage. The use of two or more Accelsior_E2 SSDs requires OS X 10.6.8 or later.
    • Windows booting is only supported in slot #3 on a 2008 Mac Pro (with model ID MacPro3,1). To boot Windows on an Accelsior E2, only one Accelsior E2 can be installed at a time. OWC Dual Boot Enabler for Apple Boot Camp required for use with Boot Camp utility. Download here.
    • 2006-2008 Mac Pro (with model ID MacPro1,1; MacPro2,1; MacPro3,1). Due to an Apple limitation, any volume located on a Mercury Accelsior_E2 SSD will not appear in the "option boot" menu. A volume installed on an Accelsior_E2 can be set as the Mac Pro's boot volume through the "Startup Disk" pane in System Preferences.

*Requires 6Gb/s certified cables for connecting to eSATA drives - available separately. Not compatible with port-multiplier enclosures. The eSATA ports do not support hot-swapping. Accelsior_E2 eSATA ports are bootable.

Release Candidate (RC) firmware set

There are two kinds of firmware for SSDs Mass Production (MP) and Release Candidate (RC). Prior to an MP firmware release, there are beta firmware releases and an RC firmware release. Often, the RC is the same as the MP release, however there can be small changes and bug fixes made between the two. OWC has evaluated the RC for the 6Gb/s SandForce 2281 Processor and found it to be stable with no issues reported during our testing. However, as with any evolutionary product, issues may surface as different usages and configurations are employed and it is important to understand that there will be further updates and revisions.

Since no firmware update is currently offered for the OWC Mercury EXTREME Pro 6G SSD, no update page exists. To see the typical steps involved with a self performed field firmware update, please visit our 3Gb/s product update page at: http://eshop.macsales.com/Customized_Pages/Framework.cfm?page=sf_firmware.html

It is important to note that the current firmware update tool requires the use of Windows XP/Vista/7. OWC is currently working on a Mac OS based update tool, but we do not have an exact availability date.

Manual

Driver8

Required for Accelsior E2 SSDs purchased before 3/24/2016.
Driver for Apple Mac Pro
  1. Requires 6Gb/s certified cables for connecting to eSATA drives - available separately. Not compatible with port-multiplier enclosures. The eSATA ports do not support hot-swapping. Accelsior_E2 eSATA ports are bootable. A sleep conflict may be encountered when using certain eSATA chipsets via the eSATA ports when booted to the Accelsior_E2. See the specifications tab for affected solutions where System Sleep mode MUST be disabled in order to ensure reliable operation. Allowing system sleep to occur while one of the affected external drives is connected via the Accelsior_E2 eSATA ports could result in loss of data following wake from sleep. Although the above are our general recommendations for use, wake from sleep has been determined to only be an issue when the Accelsior PCIe is used for startup (SSD or eSATA connected device). We are working with our partners to see that the sleep/wake function is fully supported with all solutions and startup scenarios.
  2. 1GB = 1,000,000,000 bytes. Total accessible capacity varies depending upon operating environment (typically 5-10% less). The actual total capacity will depend on your own defined file settings/preferences.
  3. In terms of standard gigabytes, 1GiB ≈ 1.074GB and refers to the actual formatted capacity of shown under Mac OS 10.5 or earlier and Microsoft Windows OS.
  4. Specific application environments such as temperature and duty cycle will affect the overall reliability.
  5. Performance may vary by machine - see compatibility tab for details.
  7. OWC Dual Boot Enabler for Apple Boot Camp required for use with Boot Camp utility. Download here.
  8. Driver ensures proper power-down of Accelsior E2 during sleep, restart, and shutdown actions that may otherwise not occur in the Mac Pro with PCIe connected drive volumes. This driver does not affect or interact with other drivers, software applications, hardware devices, etc. This driver is not required for use of Accelsior E2 in Thunderbolt to PCIe Expansion chassis (such as OWC Helios). No driver is required for use of Accelsior E2 for Windows or Linux operating systems.

Note: The use of two or more Accelsior SSDs requires OS X 10.6.8 or later.
Note: While using Windows with an Accelsior, only one Accelsior SSD can be installed.

Rating: 4/5 Fast... June 13, 2016 I installed the first gen version of this drive in my mid-2010 MacPro 5,1. After a few days of "option" selecting it as the boot drive during start-up (I have another sata drive with the same OS) my Mac remembered it as the primary start-up disk. It's really fast! Love the speed. However, is anyone else's Mac showing the drive as a SATA external (rotational) drive in Disk Utility and System Reports?

Rating: 5/5 Easy Path to Great Speed June 9, 2016 I've been thinking about an SSD upgrade for my mid-2010 Mac Pro for some time, but didn't realize a PCI option was available until an earlier, used model turned up in your Garage Sale. The E2 seemed an even better deal, all things considered, and thanks to your installation video it was almost as easy as a memory chip click into place. Your instructions for setting up my new SSD start-up disk were clear and a big help: El Capitan downloaded and installed in about an hour, and it took less than an hour and a half to transfer via Migration Assistant all of my applications and settings from my original start-up disk, which is now still waiting as a back-up or repair disk on my Mac. I was very happy to discover that my copy of Adobe CS6 still performs all the tasks that at lest I need on this new system, and that even my now venerable copy of DVD Studio Pro works better and faster than it did under Yosemite!.From the moment I press the power button it takes about 20 seconds for the finder to load, and many apps, as promised, open in a flash. It feels as though I've bought the computer upgrade I couldn't afford!

Rating: 5/5 Very big difference April 14, 2016 Wow, my 2008 Mac Pro was running on its original HD, which for some reason had slowed to a read/write rate of about 30-50 MB/s. The new drive was easy to install, and after formatting and cloning has a read/write of 700/550. My Mac Pro suddenly feels like a supercomputer by comparison. It is early days but so far I haven't had any problems.

Rating: 5/5 Two cards in one for Mac Pro 3,1 users April 11, 2016 The speed and quality of the PCI card is advertised. For those Mac Pro 3,1 users like me that don't have an extra high speed PCIe slot to plug in a SATA 6 card, you might try what I did. Reroute the two eSATA ports back into the inside of the Mac Pro using a eSATA to SATA connector, buy two Newer Technology 3.5" to 2.5" adapter cards to fit a Mac Pro, grind or cut off the SATA 3 connectors on the Newer Technology adapter, Put Right Angle SATA 6 connectors on the SSD's you installed in the Newer Technology cards (they fit now because you removed the SATA 3 connector) and connect the other ends of the SATA 6 cables to the Accelsior E2 Mercury card. You now have 2 of your 4 internal Mac Pro hard drives running at SATA 6 speeds, powered by the Mac Pro. Add software raid software from MacSales if you want for even faster speeds than SATA 6.

Rating: 5/5 Highly recommended for Photoshop March 22, 2016 I purchased this PCIe SSD to speedup the computing processes in my 2010 Mac Pro when working in Photoshop and Lightroom. I have not been disappointed; these programs are very large and many tasks are processor and memory intensive. The SSD shortens processing time very significantly and gives me two eSATA ports to connect to external drives for storage - a win-win. I strongly recommend this card to any Mac Pro user, especially for photo or video editing.

Rating: 5/5 A No Brainer February 27, 2016 My 2009 Mac Pro was so slow that i could turn it on, go make a sandwich and when i got back you could still hear the hard drive working overtime. It was time to do a clean install so a good opportunity to upgrade.Card was easy to install and I was able to keep my old hard drive in so I could transfer what I wanted manually, because I'm not a fan of migration assistant.Boots up so fast you won't believe it and no more spinning beach ball.

Rating: 5/5 Quenches my need for speed!! February 27, 2016 My 5.1 Mac Pro boot times were sooo slow! It would would take more than 5 minutes for my Mac to boot up and stabilize. All my programs would take an inordinate amount of time to start and load. My UAD card would hardly ever work correctly. One of my trusted friends advised me that using a pcie card as a boot/program drive would give my Mac a new lease on life. After Conducting research, I decided that the Mercury Accelsior would work best for my needs. Once installed and tweaked, this card has worked flawlessly. Boot times are less than a minute and my programs/UAD card loads quickly without a hitch. One of the best purchases I made to hot rot my Mac!!!

This Mac Pro started out as a 2009 model 4,1. 2x 2.6 (8 core). in late 2011 I added 32 RAM 1066 (OWC match set) In early 2013 with firmware it became a 5,1 (2010) and added 2x 2.93 (12core), 32 Ram 1333. In late 2015 installed 2x 3.46 (12 core). The last CPU upgrade did not really improve the speed. I decided to try this Mercury PCI card. I was not disappointed. Boot up time is 14 seconds. and no lag waiting for apps to preform. P.S. The OWC 32 Ram 1066 became 1333 with the firmware update.

Rating: 5/5 It's Fast! October 14, 2015 Everything during normal use works at the click of a button or tap! Installing the card was easy and I did a fresh install of El Capitan on it. Don't forget to install the driver for it from OWC!

Rating: 5/5 Dramatic Improvement to LogicX October 4, 2015 My primary reason for looking at a SSD card was to upgrade my mac pro 8 core for my audio production setup. The Mercury Accelsior E2 PCI Express was a piece of cake to setup and is now my boot drive and is significantly faster for all my applications, including Logic X.

Rating: 5/5 This Is It! August 21, 2015 The ultimate. I've purchased alot from OWC for more than a decade, always great, price, packaging and shipping. But this is special, just an absolute superior product. In my 2010 Mac Pro, transfer speeds about twice that of the Samsung SSD drive in my powerhouse PC. This unit brings data speed upto that of the newest SSD Macbook pro and MacPro. Just super, Thanks OWC.

Rating: 5/5 Excellent, new life to my Mac! August 14, 2015 Very impressed with this product, works fantastic. Side effect of adding it a my boot drive, was it skips the RAID card Bios setup, which takes forever, and boots very fast, but I can still use my RAID card, just saves the time to 'boot' the raid bios before it can run the OS... Very unexpected benefit, but for this alone it was worth it;

Very fast performance; very quite and no noticeable heat build inside the machine!

Rating: 5/5 Outstanding. Wildly fast. August 5, 2015 I recently upgraded from a 480 to a 960 (I highly recommend the garage sale and the rebate program). To transfer data, I booted from one of my spinning disk drives and I was amazed at how incredibly slow spinning disk drives are! I have had my 480 for about a year and I've become conditioned to the Accelsior speed. The larger 960 is up and running-- and fast fast fast. Use those old fashioned spinning drives for backups.
