Rating: 4/5 Nice simple external drive September 8, 2014 I purchased this product to upgrade the HD in my 2009 MacMini. I was originally running Snow Leopard, but I wanted the new drive in place before I upgraded to Mavericks. Assembly of the bare drive into the enclosure is very straight forward. Then I cloned the original 160GB SL drive to the 500GB HGST drive using Disk Utility. Following the instructions on OWC website, I disassemble my MacMini and upgraded RAM and swapped the hard drives, putting my original 160GB drive into the enclosure. The new drive booted right away and then I proceeded to upgrade to Mavericks. Once the Mavericks upgrade was stable, I cloned the new drive to my old drive so that I have a bootable backup of Mavericks. Since the old drive was smaller than my new drive, Disk Utility would not work for me so I used DataBackup3 instead and that worked fine.

I did not give the product 5 stars because being very simple, the controller in the enclosure won't put the harddrive to sleep when the computer goes to sleep. But as a backup boot, it works fine.

Rating: 5/5 Easy Installation of Hard Drive August 27, 2014 I decided to upgrade my mid 2009 white Macbook. I upgraded the ram to 4GB and I upgraded the hard drive to the HGST 500GB 7200rpm DYI kit which came with the drive, a hard drive enclosure to use your old drive as a external drive and a tool kit.. OWC had everything I needed for the upgrades at a reasonable price. The installation is quite simple for the first timer if you follow the instructions and watch the videos from the OWC website. My Macbook now is quick and more responsive and is up to speed as some newer models. I am glad I found the OWC website great products, do your research compare and you can't go wrong.
