On Tuesday, May 18th a security vulnerability was announced that every Mac OS X user should be aware of. This vulnerability, rated "highly critical" by one of the first security oriented websites that first reported it, opens your machine up to allowing the Mac OS Help application to be executed. While this does not sound like it would be the end of the world, it cascades allowing full access to the system, the terminal, and the opportunity for a malicious script to be run that could delete data. This exploit could be utilized any number of ways, the most dangerous is the fact that simply visiting a webpage could activate it. Other delivery methods could be via email, or direct access to a machine. For more information about this exploit, MacOSXHints has some of the best information at this time. Apple has not addressed this security hole as of yet, but is expected to very soon. Fortunately, there have been 2 freeware fixes released to the public, the first being Don't Go There GURLfriend! by Isophonic Software, and the second released yesterday by our friends at Unsanity. called Paranoid Android. Regardless of which utility you choose to use, we highly recommend that you install one of these patches at your earliest convenience to avoid something unfortunate happening. For an example of what could happen if an exploit such as this was used against your computer, visit this site. Be aware that this does no damage to your machine, it's a simple example.
