Rating: 5/5 This product is really, really fast. November 11, 2015 I was pleasantly surprised by this product extremely fast transfer files speed. Believe me, I am not a geek when it comes to computer numbers or claims to what marketing groups write about their goods; but the Buffalo Thunderbolt MiniStation blew me away. I have never come across another storage device, in Thunderbolt connection, that simply transferred my files with such speed and ease. I really like this product, it's look and unobtrusive nature. Nice.

Rating: 4/5 Hoping for this to be the "perfect" external drive... November 11, 2015 I've been experimenting with multiple external drives for the past 10 months. I settled on and have been using two HGST Touro 1TB 7200 rpm drives for about 6 months now, but quickly tired of carrying around 2 separate drives.

The Buffalo Ministation and the La Cie are the only two, 2TB thunderbolt drives available on the market that are worth considering that aren't as expensive as SSD, but still provide the speed of a 7200 rpm drive.

I just received my drive from OWC this week and I must say I'm impressed. The drive does not run "hot" although I have not put it under a huge workload just yet. It does run "warm" though.

I wanted to share this screen shot from a Blackmagic Speed test for everyone's consideration. I'm hoping this drive is the answer to my external needs until someone comes up with a 2TB internal SSD that I don't need to take out a mortgage for! Cheers!

Rating: 5/5 Large Capacity, Compact Size September 26, 2015 I bought several of these to replace all of our 1TB LaCie Quadra hard drives that we use for backups of our server and other workstations. Their compact size and lack of power supply mean that they are super portable and easy to place next to equipment. Because we use redundant backups, one is always in the trunk of my car until it is rotated out. It is so small it is easy to store under the trunk floor next to the spare tire. Their R/W speeds are decent and I have yet to experience a failure with 4 of these in full-time use for a couple of years now. They are my go-to drive when I need large capacity and portability.

Rating: 5/5 Small size and Thunderbolt FAST June 21, 2015 I bought this to use as a clone backup for my main drive. Since I live in Japan I want to be able to walk out the door with a drive that is capable of getting me restarted if a big earthquake destroys my home. This drive is ideal and offers the speed associated with the Thunderbolt connection. It has been working flawlessly since I set it up with my iMac. A very satisfied customer.

Rating: 5/5 Lightweight and portable May 29, 2015 This drive is great for backing up, or using as extra storage for a newer MacBook with a Thunderbolt port. It's fast, and it's powered by the bus, so there's no power supply to worry about forgetting, or to lug around. It's also great for transferring files created on your MacBook while on the road, to your desktop when you get back to the office, or home.

Rating: 5/5 This device works great November 17, 2014 This portable disk has worked flawlessly since I took it out of the box. I love the fact that is is self-powered and does not need an external power supply. My first unit needed an external supply and was constantly getting misplaced, so for me this is a plus that its bus powered.

As I stated its worked flawlessly since taking it out of the box, does not seem to overheat as the case stays relatively cool. I like the 3 year warranty as well, although right now I am not expecting to have to use it. Buffalo has always been great when I needed to contact them, thats another reason I chose this unit.

Rating: 5/5 REALLY fast data access, transfer and saves. November 9, 2014 It's nice to finally have an external drive that's accesses, writes and reads my large graphic files as quickly as I can work. It's self-powered (via the INCLUDED Thunderbolt cable), is quiet AND mobile – ALL are added bonuses. I wish it had come with a case, but for the price, this is a great deal. I found a compatible travel case (hard shell) on a bidding site for less than $8.

Rating: 5/5 A workhorse August 16, 2014 This "little" drive is a real workhorse. I work in post production sound as a feature film re-recording mixer and I use this drive continually for temporary archiving and file transfers from studio to studio.

Rating: 2/5 Only worthwhile for certain Macs. August 6, 2014 Only useful for Macs with both a Thunderbolt port and USB 2.0. It is then your fastest single hard drive external option. If you have USB 3.0, stick with that. There's no speed advantage to this drive and a bargain basement USB 3.0 drive will be just as fast for far less money.

The drive also can't easily be opened to add a faster mechanism and doesn't daisy-chain because there's only one thunderbolt port.

Response from MacSales.com, Technical Support August 6, 2014 Both Thunderbolt and USB 3.0 provide more bandwidth than the drive mechanism inside takes, so the drive mechanism itself is running at full speed regardless of interface connected. Also, all bus-powered Thunderbolt devices need to be plugged into the end of the device chain. Only Thunderbolt devices with a power supply are able to be in the middle of a daisy chain. It isn't a drawback of the product, but rather a specification of Thunderbolt itself.

Rating: 5/5 Simple, Fast, Reliable May 18, 2014 Just what I was looking for to go with my TBolt iMac for storage & backup. I have not had the issue with heat described by another review- warm, yes, but nowhere near hot. As a fail-safe I disconnect it & store it in an out-building when I go on trips, just in case a disaster happens to the house. It easily & reliably handles that.

Rating: 5/5 Very pleased November 9, 2013 I bought the 1.0TB Buffalo MiniStation Thunderbolt to hold my iMovie library - it was using too much of the internal HDD on my iMac. The drive, connected to the Thunderbolt port, is fast enough to work with video in iMovie. I'm not experiencing the heat issues I've seen in other reviews. I purchased the drive locally more than three months ago. Will consider adding another if I need to replace one of my other external backup drives.

Rating: 5/5 Excellent product May 21, 2013 This is an excellent product. A Bus-powered interface turns it a very portable thunderbolt HD. It's also fast, reliable and well made. In comparison with Lacie thunderbolt drives it has a better cost benefit.

Rating: 4/5 Relatively heavy, gets hot, sucks power February 12, 2013 I bought two of these when they were announced, but after using for two months, I feel there are better options out there. I have many USB, FireWire, and these Thunderbolt drives (I shoot video and stills).

My experience with the Buffalos is that they work perfectly well (I have two partitions set up; one for Time Machine backup on the road, and one for data), but they run way hotter than any of my other ten drives. As well, they drain the power out of our top-of-the-line MacBook Airs and Pros faster than USB drives.

For recreational use, any USB 2 drive is fast enough to watch a movie from, but for editing HD video, you need FW800 speeds, plus. The Buffalos (either Thunderbolt or USB 3 are fast enough for this (but so are the LiCie Ruggeds, and they are lighter and do not run as hot).

Rating: 5/5 overall a solid thunderbolt drive option December 27, 2012 for the price this 1TB thunderbolt drive is great, obviously a solid state drive would be quicker but thats another story :), even for a 7200 rpm drive i still get great read/write speeds. overall a great product at a great price

Rating: 3/5 Gets VERY hot when connected by thunderbolt December 19, 2012 I bought this drive because it was a good price for a combo of USB3, Thunderbolt, a handy 1TB HDD, and a thunderbolt cable included. I intended to swap the HDD out for an SSD at some later date, should there be a reason to do so. With a HDD, there's not much point in the Thunderbolt port because R/W speeds are no faster via Thunderbolt than via USB3 (according to OWC's benchmarks), but with an SSD there would be a point. However, what I did not expect is how HOT the drive gets when it is connected by Thunderbolt - even when the drive is idle. Hot enough to burn your hand! If the same thing happens with an SSD inside, I really don't think this drive can realistically be used via Thunderbolt regularly.
