Customer Reviews
These little RAIDs have yet to be beat by anyone. The physical size, the storage size, connection flexibility, and the overall package add up to an awesome little box. I've had mine for about ten years now (!) and other than an upgrade from 2x500GB to 2x1TB, I haven't had to touch it once, it's been flawless. I'm so enamored of this device, in fact, that it's 2025 and I just purchased a second unit (in 0GB config and new in box) to expand my storage. Popped a pair of 2TB WD Blue laptop drives in it, plugged it in using the beefy 2A 12VDC brick and a StarTech USB3C2ESATA3 adapter and baby, we're golden. It says something about industry and consumer priorities that even with its older Rev. 2 eSATA chipset I still couldn't find anything new that compares in terms of speed, packaging, convenience, compatibility - there just is no comparison. I guess that makes me the odd man out! And don't forget, no one is offering an external enclosure with hardware RAID in this format - I've seen some offerings that mount in a 5.25" drive bay and which advertise having JMS chipsets, but not only would that require an enclosure for the enclosure, you'd still need a connectivity solution to go from the 5.25" bay's regular SATA, out of the case, and into your Mac's whatever-you've-got. Then you're still stuck with that hinky JMS chipset, so good luck with lost data if you can even keep it connected long enough to store something. With the GMax Mini, the 2.5" format and reliable mid-tier connections, combined with its Oxford 936DS chip, are enough to put this little black box at the top of my list. So nice I bought it twice :)

This drive worked great as I used it for a cross country motorcycle ride and was using my 2008 MacBook Pro. I loved being able to have the external storage be bus powered.

Works well and worth the investment. The only minus: the LCD display is difficult to read from an angle, even when you try to vary the contrast. Aside from that, it's an overall good product
