MAXimum Performance & Compatibility
Underneath Guardian MAX's sleek, unassuming housing beats the heart of a super protector ready to save large amounts of precious data quickly, reliably, and effortlessly. Pre-configured hardware RAID solutions feature two paired lightning fast SATA 1.5/3.0Gb/s drives with up to 2.0TB each of storage capacity and a high speed Custom Oxford 946DSE/3100 Integrated Chipset featuring FireWire 800/400, USB 3.0, and eSATA ports to deliver some of the fastest single drive transfer rates possible...up to 300MB per second! Enclosure only kits are also available for "add your own hard drive" flexibility and economy With its multiple interface connections, Guardian MAXimus makes adding vault-like mirrored data storage performance to Macintosh and Windows computers Plug and Play easy.
MAXimum Real Time Redundancy
Real performance can also be measured by intangibles like having peace of mind knowing your critical data is always safe! Should you experience a hard drive failure, the ever vigilant Guardian MAXimus automatically and seamlessly continues data read/write functions with the remaining drive. And with the convenient front panel drive status LEDs, you'll know at a glance which drive is being accessed and if you need to take any action.
Why You Need Guardian MAXimus RAID-1
Guardian MAXimus is "live activity" backup of financial records, medical files, business projects...any critical data that you simply cannot risk losing. It's always guarding against data loss by writing the same information in real-time to two separate drives for a "mirrored" copy. It also protects you from costly system downtime and data restoring after a single hard drive-equipped system crash. Even daily scheduled software driven data backups can't protect you from the time of your last backup and when your computer's internal drive fails.

Rating: 4/5 My 2nd Guardian Maximus July 24, 2015 Value for the money on the 3TB+3TB Guardian Maximus is the best thing about this RAID. I definitely require a mirrored backup for my client data, and this system has served well. So well, that this is my second purchase of this drive. I'll likely be purchasing a third when my projects fill the two drives I have.

They do not run as quietly as I thought they would, but certainly not distracting, even though they're situated close to me on my desk.

I use these drives for editing in FCPX on an iMac. They're not the fastest drives in town, but they are dependable and fast enough to edit with. I pull in AVCHD footage rewrapped as MOV. Occasionally I will see some lag on an unrendered timeline, but never see lag on optimized media. Works well for me.

Rating: 5/5 Great External HD! March 31, 2015 I have looked and researched a long time for a backup External HD. And then I realized that I haven't looked at what OWC had to offer. Needless to say, my research would have been much shorter had I just remembered to go to OWC. I have been a OWC customer for over 15+ years and their products are still the best and most reliable out there. The 2.0TB NewerTech Guardian MAXimus is no exception. It is fast, and quiet. The case looks like it could take a beating. Very sturdy and very solid. I had to use USB 2.0 as I did not realize my laptop did not have USB 3.0 at all. But no matter, read/write speed is very fast. I was able to backup a total of 450GB of pictures and videos in a matter of hours. I have only had the HD a couple of months but am impressed with the performance nonetheless. I will not hesitate to get another one and will recommend it to anyone who ask. Thanks OWC. I have needed to backup my pictures and videos for some time now and I feel confident that they are well secured in the NewerTech Guardian HD.

Rating: 4/5 Mostly happy so far March 13, 2015 Set up was easy, basically plug in and ready to go. I am using this RAID to house the media for my iTunes library (and with it's mirror setting to automaticaly back it up). I haven't had any problems though it's only been a month or so. My only complaint is the fan is a bit on the noisy side. It is loud enough to be noticeable in a quiet room but not when I'm listening to music at a normal volume (which is the only time I have the drive turned on).

Rating: 5/5 Well-designed, well-made product; great features February 27, 2015 We purchased this to house a large collection of photos. It is currently connected to our Apple iMac via Firewire, although it has the interfaces we may need in the future. Installation was a breeze and the performance is terrific. We have been bitten by single drive failures in the past, so we are sleeping better with this RAID-1 configuration and the reliability it offers. The device is compact, easy to place, and fairly quiet. We can hear some fan sound, but it is not bothersome. The documentation is fine and easy to follow. We have not made use of the added software, but may someday.

Rating: 5/5 Great MIRROR RAID January 12, 2015 This is my first MIRROR RAID and I feel better about my data security (because of the data duplication). I also use this disk for backups, and it is faster than the previous disk I used - backups now take about 1/3 the time. I don't yet know about long-term reliability since I have been using this disk for less than 2 months, but so far it has been terrific.

Rating: 5/5 Fun...no, really August 27, 2014 Backups are not fun. They are not sexy. People don't backup computers for these reasons. But dang it, I was like a kid on a major religious holiday when I opened this box. It's sexy looking, and just plug and play right out of the box. The automated setup was very easy, and who doesn't love a 2 TB RAID 1? It's fun because it includes a truckload of software, including especially useful software like Prosoft Data Backup 3. So far so good with this drive. Looking forward to it working silently in the background for me for many years.

Rating: 5/5 Great backup drive August 1, 2014 OWC is the best! the best customer service and products. I have four OWC Drives, two Gaurdian Maximus an Elite Pro and a mini pro, one of the drives on the Maximus failed (this was four years on and to be expected), i called OWC and they helped me get set up again quickly. The thing with the raid drives is that if they don't have the same firmware drive at the time one fails you have to replace both, luckily i was able to get the data off the one drive and then rebuild the Maximus. I highly recommend OWC, great service!

Rating: 4/5 Very happy so far April 9, 2014 I just received mine yesterday, 4+4. I'm thrilled with OWC's fast shipping. This setup is compact and it looks good. It looks and feels like solid, quality product. Set-up was a breeze on my Mac Pro. I feel like I should mention one negative: the noise. The claims of “whisper quiet” are, unfortunately, exaggerated. I'm not all that bothered by the noise because #1, it's substantially quieter than my old ReadyNAS, and #2, I took the manufacturer's claims with a grain of salt. Honestly, had they not said “whisper” quiet, and “recording studio” quiet, and just gone with “hey, this thing's pretty quiet,” I'd have been thrilled with the noise level, and probably raving about that specifically. But I'm annoyed by false claims, and if you're really expecting it to be “recording studio” quiet, you might be disappointed.

Overall, though, I'm quite satisfied with the product, and would buy other units from this company.

Rating: 5/5 3T Newer Technology Guardian Maximus RAID July 30, 2013 We purchased one in 2011 for video production and love it. We chose a RAID so that if one drive happens to fail, we'll have our hours of work immediately retrievable from the other. No worries about doing backups. We've never had a moment's trouble with it, so now we've gotten another one (July 2013) for more video production.

Rating: 2/5 Can't confirm function July 3, 2013 Seems to be doing its job but I have no way to confirm that it is actually backing up my data. The mirrored hard disk drive is invisible to any disk program I've tried, including disk warrior, disk utility, drive genius. I called customer service to find out if there was a way to see the drive; they could tell me to "look inside the enclousure." Big help. Why would they design the firmware like this? Is it just me? I'm going to have to open the enclousure and connect each drive separately in order to verify. Not that I don't trust OWC, they have always given me good value and functioning products, but I think anyone who owns this unit would like to be able to "see" that the backup system is working. Trust, but verify.

This review is from 3.0TB (3.0TB + 3.0TB Mirrored) NewerTech Guardian MAXimus RAID-1 [MIRROR] Quad Interface Solution.

Response from MacSales.com, Marketing July 3, 2013 The front of the enclosure has two LED indicators labeled HDD1 and HDD2. They light green when data is being read or written to each drive. In the event that one drive fails, the corresponding LED will be a solid red color indicating which drive needs to be replaced. The "See it in action" video on the right side of the following page shows that process: http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/firewire/usb/raid_1/Gmax The storage solution shows as one volume on your desktop, disk utility, etc. as it is a hardware-based solution - the RAID is maintained by the enclosure itself. It is designed to be simple and seamless. For those that wast a more hands-on 2-drive RAID 1 solution for their Mac, we do offer the Mercury Elite Pro Mirrored RAID Storage Solution which is powered by the award-winning SoftRAID 4 which features comprehensive monitoring tools as well as automatic recovery. http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/firewire/1394/USB/EliteAL/MirrorRAID/

Rating: 5/5 Saved my butt (and my family's data) April 30, 2013 I've been burned by claims of RAID-1 based drive enclosures in the past. They say they're redundant and safe, but they're not. Most of the drive enclosures use proprietary low-level formatting that makes it easier to mirror the drives, but prevents the drives from being used outside of their enclosures. You are forced to use data forensics tools *on the good drive* to recover your data when the bad drive fails. This is totally absurd, but unfortunately true!

The NewerTech Guardian MAXimus doesn't use proprietary low-level formatting. You can remove the drives and use them in normal eSata enclosures. I witnessed this directly with my first Guardian MAXimus. I bought the 0GB model (no pre-installed drives) and placed a known-good 750GB drive in it. I ordered an identical drive from OWC and popped it in and watched the Guardian MAXimus sync it with the original.

It worked fine for three years until one of the 750GB drives failed. I popped the good drive out and placed it in a temporary enclosure and easily copied all of the data off of it. I could have simply popped in another 750GB drive, but I wanted to upgrade to 3TB drives.

I just bought my third NewerTech Guardian MAXimus with mirrored 3GB drives pre-insalled. I wouldn't trust my data on anything else.

Rating: 5/5 Superb March 25, 2013 As soon as I opened the box I knew that I had made a great choice. The enclosure is built like a tank, solid, substantial and very much a professional product. I am using the 3TB version on a Mac so no formatting was necessary. In literally 3 minutes I was underway and moving my entire photo library over to the NewerTech Guardian. The quality of this product is incredible. I will be purchasing a second Guardian for my iTunes library in the very near future.

Rating: 5/5 This product works as advertised. January 30, 2013 I am not a skilled computer user, my iMac has been reasonably intuitive to learn and the RAID1 has continued with that style; simple straight forward plug and play - love it. It is supported by the bundled software (data backup 3) to provide an easy transition to safe secure backup for my data.

Rating: 5/5 Great Backup Solution September 20, 2012 With Firewire 800 or USB 3 this is a great inexpensive (compared to thunderbolt rediculousness) backup solution. Running solid as expected.

Rating: 5/5 Recommend Guardian August 19, 2012 The Guardian Maximus 2.0 TB Raid-1 offers a lot in the way storage capacity and ease of use. As a photographer I need fast and reliable storage but want to avoid complicated new hardware that will take me away from my primary work. The Guardian Maximus is the ideal solution with high storage capacity, high security, and minimal set up and maintenance demands. Highly recommend for non-IT professionals.
