Before attempting to perform this installation, please watch the following instructional video in its entirety to determine your ability to perform this complex procedure. OWC assumes no responsibility for damage that may occur during the install. Technical support for this DIY product consists only of this video:
NOTE: A small number of 2012 units were shipped with the drive mounted in the upper drive bay rather than the more typical lower bay shown in this video. If you have a 2012 model, you will want to determine the configuration of your Mac mini's drives prior to ordering.
~To do this using OS X 10.10 or earlier~
Open Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility.app and click on the grey drive icon at the left edge of the window. If the "Connection ID" at the bottom-left corner of the window lists "Lower", you may proceed using the standard installation instructions. If it lists "Upper" then you have a special configuration which will need additional components, and you will need to also refer to the Addendum video.
~To do this using OS X 10.11 or later~
Open Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility.app and click on the grey drive icon at the left edge of the window. Next click the "Info" button on the toolbar. A window will open. Scroll to the "Location" item; if you see "Lower" you may proceed using the standard installation instructions. If it lists "Upper" then you have a special configuration which will need additional components, and you will need to also refer to the Addendum video.
Yes, You Can Do-it-Yourself
OWC is committed to your success, so if you need a bit more guidance, we are available Mon-Fri 8AM-8PM and Sat 9AM-4PM with U.S. based technical support by phone or live chat.
While OWC encourages the DIY philosophy, this is a challenging install that requires advanced skills. If, after watching the how-to video, you are not fully confident of your ability to perform the installation, you can choose to have OWC "Do It For You" via our Apple Mac mini Installation Service.
NOTE: This kit contains consumable and/or one time use components and therefore is not covered by any warranty. If you have any concerns about your ability to perform the upgrade, you can return the unopened kit for a refund. The 5-Piece Toolkit (except for nylon pry tool) included with this kit is covered by a 1 Year NewerTech Product Limited Warranty.
Rating: 5/5Be Careful!!!January 16, 2016Please, PLEASE read the booklet AND watch the video several times BEFORE beginning any upgrade aside from adding RAM. I've done surgery before on numerous Macs & PCs over the years and felt moderately confident after watching the video & reading the booklet. The I/O connector, well noted in the documentation, broke clean off the logic board w/ only slight effort. I could not get a good pry point to separate the wiring from the connector. Off to the Apple Store to replace the logic board, $391 for the item. Unless you've been inside these before, the shade tree mechanic is not qualified to really poke inside. If you want to swap the HD for a SSD or add the SSD alongside the HD, do the right thing and send the Mini to OWC and let them do it because 98% of us really don't have the proper experience to do this correctly. I would recommend this item to a friend!

Rating: 5/5great valueDecember 30, 2015I was going to buy the drive and the kit, but this had a better value. the Mac mini is harder than you think to take apart. I have built many many computers over the years and the mini has literally no extra wiggle room. I was only able to get one of 2 screws back in that hold the wireless antenna. the second hold is off by a few hairs and will not go back in. Everything works well, and the instructions are very clear. probably took me an hour in total to install the drive. I would not attempt if your not comfortable working with computer boards, as the plugs feel very fragile. Rating: 5/5Great way to speed up the Mac miniDecember 24, 2015I used this to create a Fusion drive in my 2012 Mac mini. It improved the machine's responsiveness considerably. Because of the excellent installation videos, I knew ahead of time that my mini had the stock drive installed in the upper bay. That meant I had to buy the extra kit, but it also meant the installation was a lot easier because I didn't have to take out the motherboard and power supply. Once I had it installed and booted from an external drive, Disk Utility saw that I had an SSD and an HDD and automatically created a Fusion drive from them. After restoring from my backup I was instantly up and running. Rating: 5/5A "Must" PurchaseOctober 14, 2015This kit coupled with an SSD is a NO BRAINER. The install is easy when following the OWC on-line video. All the necessary tools are included. You won't believe the speed and performance coming out of that little Mac Mini box. We've installed these in 2 of our 2012, quad-core i7 minis (16 gigs RAM). 300 megabyte Photoshop files or 60 page InDesign files are no problem….and did I say fast? I would recommend this item to a friend!

Rating: 5/5Easy installation-great designJuly 17, 2015I have to admit I truly HATE opening any Mac. There's usually problems from the beginning. If you've ever had to crack a Mac open, you know what I'm talking about! However, that being said-I have to admit that this time, the surprise was that this add-on was actually very easy to install. Instructions were perfectly clear and there were no surprises (like not having the tools for the job), because they're included! Love the extra storage space now, and don't really miss the dvd drive-if I really need to use one, I attach an inexpensive external one and I'm all set. Kudos to whoever the designer(s) was/were that came-up with this little kit. They paid attention to the details and made a quality product for non-techie-types to be able to do a job that SHOULD be this simple! I'd love to see Apple hire them to design the next mac mini-that way cracking the case on one wouldn't be such a painful process! THANK YOU OWC for making the data doubler part of your regular inventory! I would recommend this item to a friend!
Rating: 5/5Very nice packageJuly 5, 2015OWC has thought of everything.
The kit contains everything that you need to add in a second hard drive. The only thing it doesn't have is a hex key.
The videos are also really detailed - though they make the process look easier than it actually is.

Rating: 5/5Tricky install, good directionsJune 18, 2015The meat of this product is essentially a cable and the tools & instructions to use it- I was happy with all of the above. This product is inherently tricky to install, as you have to take nearly Everything out of your mini to get to the 'upper' drive bay, including the logic board!. The provided installation manual was spot on & made the process much easier than it would have been without. This install is still not for those unsure of their abilities, and I recommend a quiet spot away from too many distractions. One bump in the road with my install- the SATA connector slipped partway off the new drive during re-assembly, causing the machine to not see the drive when I booted it back up. I had to tear it back down all the way and reattach the cable. Being more watchful the second time, it stayed on and everything works fine now (writing this from my now speedier mini ;) ). The speed difference under Yosemite with a SSD is very noticeable with boot time, logging in & out, and app launch times much smaller. I would recommend this item to a friend!
Rating: 5/5quality products and servicesMay 31, 2015At first, I thought the price was a bit high for what it was. However, after receiving the package I enjoyed the quality of the items and the care they took to prepare the installation instructions. Every little detail and warning, including exceptions, were carefully indicated in the manual. Big nice colourful pictures were in the manual and the online videos were also very helpful. My second hard drive on my mac mini is working perfectly. I would certainly recommend it to anyone. I would recommend this item to a friend!

Rating: 5/5Pretty easy install - Incredibly usefulApril 10, 2015Arrived in no-frills packaging, good enough to protect the contents and not too much as to be wasteful, though it did come with a full color thick printed manual for the install guide. The guide was spot on and every step had a clear picture of which screws to remove or component to press/turn/pull/etc, I just wished it had come with a PDF (or QR code on the envelope to load on my phone?) to be more environmentally friendly.
With the clear pictures and a step-by-simple-step guide, installation was straightforward, if not time consuming. But in the end I was set up with my own fusion drive and my Mac Mini is now super fast!
