Release Candidate (RC) firmware set

There are two kinds of firmware for SSDs Mass Production (MP) and Release Candidate (RC). Prior to an MP firmware release, there are beta firmware releases and an RC firmware release. Often, the RC is the same as the MP release, however there can be small changes and bug fixes made between the two. OWC has evaluated the RC for the 6Gb/s SandForce 2281 Processor and found it to be stable with no issues reported during our testing. However, as with any evolutionary product, issues may surface as different usages and configurations are employed and it is important to understand that there will be further updates and revisions.

Since no firmware update is currently offered for the OWC Mercury EXTREME Pro 6G SSD, no update page exists. To see the typical steps involved with a self performed field firmware update, please visit our 3Gb/s product update page at: http://eshop.macsales.com/Customized_Pages/Framework.cfm?page=sf_firmware.html

It is important to note that the current firmware update tool requires the use of Windows XP/Vista/7. OWC is currently working on a Mac OS based update tool, but we do not have an exact availability date.

External Drive Usage

Supported for use in external enclosures that utilize a power source independent from the interface bus.

Not supported or recommended for use in external, bus-powered enclosures.

Dual bay units such as the Mercury Elite Dual Mini and the Guardian Maximus Mini do NOT support two of 960GB Mercury Electra MAX SSDs simultaneously, even when utilizing a power supply.
  1. 1GB = 1,000,000,000 bytes. Total accessible capacity varies depending upon operating environment (typically 5-10% less). The actual total capacity will depend on your own defined file settings/preferences.
  2. In terms of standard gigabytes, 1GiB ≈ 1.074GB and refers to the actual formatted capacity of shown under Mac OS 10.5 or earlier and Microsoft Windows OS.
  3. Specific application environments such as temperature and duty cycle will affect the overall reliability.
  4. Specifications provided by SandForce.
  5. Temperature reporting is currently an unsupported feature because due to the operating characteristics of SSDs, it is highly unlikely one would ever exceed an OWC Mercury SSD's stated operating temperature ceiling of 158F/70C. However, we are looking into supporting this feature in the future via a firmware update. Firmware updates can be found here: http://eshop.macsales.com/tech_center/OWC/SSD.

Rating: 5/5 3 yrs running flawslessly November 15, 2015 Got this kit 3 yrs ago and eventually I got a new USB 3 enclosure. I run virtual machines for labs as external disk out of 5K iMac. This disk is super fast on USB3, no issues at all. You can use internally on laptops and get a good speed up. A 2008 Macbook Pro boot time shortened from 50 sec to 30 sec on a very used Mountain Lion installation, considering SATA 1st gen interface limits. I guess you get similar speed on Windows 10 laptop.

The USB 2 enclosure, still in use with another disk, quite nice to carry media around and the tools are the right ones for non-unibody Macbook Pros.

Rating: 5/5 Great SSD! June 21, 2015 After ordering I realized (since it was a HD replacement in a 2009 iMac) I needed the 2.5" to 3.5" Drive Converter Bracket and the OWC Digital Thermal, SMC Compatible in-line cable and suction cups. Once those parts were received all went well. Installation was straight forward (with the help of OWC video and online iFixit installation instructions /w photos. Re-attaching the vertical sync ribbon cable into its socket on the LED driver board near the top left corner is challenging -- use tweezers if you have big hands!

Works great!

Rating: 5/5 Works as advertised! January 5, 2015 The installation was very easy, just following the video. With one small exception* everything worked first time. My MacBook Pro (2011) has been given a new lease on life with the speed boost from the SSD.

* There's a step missing from the instructions. Disconnecting the MacBookPro battery causes the internal clock to reset back to some default date. This causes a vague error when starting the restore install of OSX (Yosemite) on the new drive. The solution is to boot first from the old drive, now external. During the boot, the clock is set to the correct time from the Internet. Then the CMD-R restore of the OS works.

I feel comfortable calling to ask questions before purchase and after. Always learn a lot. Speak with sincere people who think about my questions. If they can't answer they refer me to tech support. Everyone wants me to buy what works with my set up and needs. Easy to purchase, support & exchange.

Bought 2 SSD drives for 2 late 2007 MBPros. The SSDs are phenomenal. MBPros are running quite well with updated OSs. I installed the 2nd SSD myself using the video after asking a couple of questions re working surface (use wood, touching metal lamps on desk will discharge static elec). The video was great (one exception: the inter. HD was held in with torx screws, not phillips; need magnifying glass to see). With the first SSD I exchanged the cheaper case for the clear plastic with a USB 3 port anticipating new mac; the cheaper case is too light for anything but data storage). The clear plastic case is great (have 3). They are a little awkward to assemble.

Rating: 5/5 *Wow* it is SPECTACULAR! September 2, 2014 I upgraded a friend's MacBook Pro, pre unibody 4,1 with this drive. What he reported via email says it all, "*Wow* it is SPECTACULAR! Fast, Quiet, Cool, Fun, so nice I don't have to worry about storage space! I would've written sooner but I've been busy, totally enthralled. I can't thank you enough!"

Rating: 5/5 SSD Upgrade was easy as ? ! August 10, 2014 My middle-aged MacBook Pro had been dragging during startup - it took better than a minute!. The Adobe Creative Cloud apps, network storage, etc required more muscle than the OEM Drive could lift. In the wee hours one day I decided to go Solid State - purchased the 480GB OWC Mercury Electra 3G and an On-The-Go SATA FW800+USB3 enclosure. The items arrived on schedule. Today I did the surgery - cloned my hard drive to the new SSD, then swapped out the old with the new. Amazingly successful results! The computer booted in less than 20 seconds!!! I named the SSD "Speed Racer" in celebration. Rendering 3D animation in Photoshop CC 2014 happens in a flash now too. I am so grateful. Thanks for being there XLR8 and OWC :)

Rating: 5/5 works great in a 2012 mac mini June 30, 2014 The memory works great. You just have to make sure you follow the video instructions. And after replacing the hard drive, you need to make sure that the fan cable is secure so the mini doesn't heat up. I'm very happy with the hard drive. It's fast, and space isn't an issue.

Rating: 5/5 Put the life back in the old laptop May 29, 2014 I had an aging 2008 MacBook Pro which was getting really slow with the new operating systems. With the new SSD drive I can put off that new purchase for another year or so. Really worth the time and effort. I'm a retired physician with NO technical background and it was easy to follow the simple instructions. Thanks a lot

Rating: 5/5 Noticeable difference in performance with SSD August 17, 2013 After experiencing SSD performance in relatives' newer Macs, I decided to replace the stock 5400 RPM HD in my mid-2010 15" MacBook Pro with a similarly-sized SSD. While the difference in performance is not quite as dramatic as I had hoped (realizing, of course, that my MBP is not a 15" Retina-display model with 16GB of RAM like the one I was comparing it to), it is still impressive. Biggest change is going from about 4-5 minute startup to less than one minute. However, other changes are also impressive. I have a lot of apps, so when I would open my applications folder, it would take a long time for all of the icons to draw - that is no longer a problem. I used iPhoto for the first time today - WOW! - it's like a different program. Other changes are not as dramatic, but the MBP is definitely snappier. (I've only had the drive installed for about three days and am still seeing performance differences as I use the computer for various tasks and programs.)

The On-the-Go case is great! Very speedy using FW800. It took less than 2 hours to copy my ~186GB of data from my old drive to the new one. Quite easy to install the SSD in the case for cloning. Removal of the old drive and installation of the new in the MBP was quite easy thanks to OWC's online videos. Toolkit has everything you need to complete the tasks. I now have my old drive in the external case to use as a backup drive.

Earlier this year, I upgraded from the stock 4GB of RAM to 8GB of OWC RAM and that also made a substantial difference in my MBP's performance. Adding the SSD has made it feel much newer.

I have made many purchases from OWC over the years and have never been disappointed.

Rating: 5/5 Fastest Mac I've owned March 17, 2013 Last year I installed OWC's 480GB solid state drive in a 13" MacBook Pro (early 2009). I ordered the upgrade bundle, and installation was a snap. But not as much of a snap as my 'new' computer. Huge change in performance — I love it.

I love it so much that I'm not inclined to spring for a new Mac at this point. I've got speed, stability, durability, and storage space that I'd have to pay a pretty stiff premium to match in a Retina MacBook. So, thanks to OWC's SSD, I'm going to hang onto my 'new' old MacBook for a while — much as I'd like to have that new display.

Thanks, OWC!

Rating: 5/5 I love you guys! February 15, 2013 Works like a dream. The old 2008 MacBook Pro used to boot in 1:45 and after the SSD and RAM upgrade its down to 0:35. That is not bad for an almost 4,5 year old mac. Really like getting a new one. Fast delivery. Kudos to OWC and UPS.

Rating: 5/5 Great Product and Simple Installation September 23, 2012 Normally I don't leave reviews for products that I buy. However, this SSD + OWC On-the-Go Kit is great. For my purposes, I wanted faster boot-up and application loading times, and I don't have too many programs on my computer. Therefore, I chose to go with a smaller and less expensive SSD, and then I am using my old hard drive in the included enclosure to store larger files, such as my iTunes library. In computer boot-up time I noticed a tremendous difference. It's slightly faster opening applications, but the increase is not dramatic as the boot-up time. One thing to note is that I upgraded my RAM about a month before installing the SSD. Another thing to note is that if you use your laptop on battery power a lot, you may see a decrease in battery life. While an SSD does consume less energy than a standard HDD in its idle state, in its active state it can consume more power than a HDD. For comparison purposes, I have a MB Pro Mid 2012 (MacBookPro9,2) with a 13 inch screen. Before installing the SSD, I upgraded RAM to 16 GB.
