Upgrade/Replace your internal drive
The Drive and Tools you need to Upgrade/Replace the existing 2.5" Drive in your laptop, Mac mini, Xbox, PS3, etc + make the drive being replaced an External for data transfer, backup, and/or additional portable storage.

Everything you need in one package, immediately ready to assemble and:
  • Backup and store your data with style and confidence.
  • Take your data with you - small enough to keep in a pocket!
  • Easily add additional laptop storage with no AC adapter required.
Examples of how this bus-powered Express bundle can be used in real world situations:

Power Users / Travelers: Relocate your "home folder" to your Express and have your files with you at home, at work or on the road without the need to synchronize your machines.

Laptop Owners: Clone your current internal SATA hard drive in your laptop to the new drive. Then install the new, larger drive in your laptop and keep the smaller drive in your Express for additional storage space.

iTunes Aficionados: Keep a copy of your iTunes library on your external drive to play on multiple machines.

Gamers: Add additional storage to your XBox 360 or PS3 game console to store music, media, and other downloads. PS3 even includes a backup utility to protect your internal drive's data.

For Everyone: Have the piece of mind of a complete backup plan. Create a bootable clone of your hard drive at regular intervals so if your computer goes down, your productivity doesn't go down with it. Boot to another computer and keep on working!

Release Candidate (RC) firmware set

There are two kinds of firmware for SSDs Mass Production (MP) and Release Candidate (RC). Prior to an MP firmware release, there are beta firmware releases and an RC firmware release. Often, the RC is the same as the MP release, however there can be small changes and bug fixes made between the two. OWC has evaluated the RC for the 6Gb/s SandForce 2281 Processor and found it to be stable with no issues reported during our testing. However, as with any evolutionary product, issues may surface as different usages and configurations are employed and it is important to understand that there will be further updates and revisions.

Since no firmware update is currently offered for the OWC Mercury EXTREME Pro 6G SSD, no update page exists. To see the typical steps involved with a self performed field firmware update, please visit our 3Gb/s product update page at: http://eshop.macsales.com/Customized_Pages/Framework.cfm?page=sf_firmware.html

It is important to note that the current firmware update tool requires the use of Windows XP/Vista/7. OWC is currently working on a Mac OS based update tool, but we do not have an exact availability date.

  1. 1GB = 1,000,000,000 bytes. Total accessible capacity varies depending upon operating environment (typically 5-10% less). The actual total capacity will depend on your own defined file settings/preferences.
  2. In terms of standard gigabytes, 1GiB ≈ 1.074GB and refers to the actual formatted capacity of shown under Mac OS 10.5 or earlier and Microsoft Windows OS.
  3. Specific application environments such as temperature and duty cycle will affect the overall reliability.
  4. Specifications provided by SandForce.
  5. Temperature reporting is currently an unsupported feature because due to the operating characteristics of SSDs, it is highly unlikely one would ever exceed an OWC Mercury SSD's stated operating temperature ceiling of 158F/70C. However, we are looking into supporting this feature in the future via a firmware update. Firmware updates can be found here: http://eshop.macsales.com/tech_center/OWC/SSD.

Rating: 5/5 SSD DRIVE April 28, 2016 I use the SSD mainly for recording Audio on my Mac Mini and the upgrade to 1TB SSD Drive was nothing short of miraculous!! It boots Apps almost as fast as you can click the button, and rendering Audio is almost instantaneous. Not to mention how much cooler my Mac Mini is running.Good job OWC once again!!!

Rating: 5/5 It runs like a new Mac Mini April 21, 2016 Since I have two iMac now the Mac Mini mid 2010 ended up in the closet because it was painfully slow, but I could bring myself to dispose of it. When I learned of OWC and I knew that I needed to come up with a computer for my dad to use I decided to up grade the memory and dive to an SSD. The up grade of the memory to 16 GB and the SSD drive made it like a new Mac Mini at a fraction of the cost. Boot up time cut in half from 100 sec. to 50 sec. and apps launch lightning fast. I'm very pleased so my mid 2010 iMac is next.

Used to take make a pot of coffee to startup to seconds, literally! EVERYTHING IS FASTER! Love this upgrade so worth it and anyone buying this SSD should definitely get the enclosure kit- so worth it!

Rating: 5/5 Super fast April 11, 2016 Replaced my stock hard drive with this awesome little unit. My mid 2009 MBP feels like a brand new machine. The old HDD went into the optical bay space, which in turn went into an external enclosure. Check out my review on the data doubler.

OS and apps are on the SSD. All major file storage, music libraries etc. are on the HDD. Works brilliantly. Computer boots from shutoff state in under 10 seconds! I have yet to see the b*tch ball of death since the install.

Rating: 5/5 SSD - Holy Amazeballs! April 10, 2016 First off, I'm not a power user, but do feel comfortable swapping out RAM and laptop batteries. Everyone told me not to do it myself, but the more research I did, the more convinced I could do it myself. I had a backup (1 TB) drive and couldn't wait to install an SSD. This had to be one of the easiest things I've done next to swapping out RAM. I'd forgotten though to reinstall OS X on the new drive before installing it, but it didn't make a difference. Seriously, I feel like a rock star. Thanks guys!

Rating: 5/5 Awesome Drive - new life to my Mac Mini April 7, 2016 This drive was straightforward to install. Upgrade was painless. Had my Mini running the first evening. It is amazingly fast. The thing that surprised me the most was simply the speed increase in opening files. Amazing. Files that would take several seconds to open now appear to open instantly. I am extremely pleased and would highly recommend this drive.

Rating: 5/5 A new lease of life April 4, 2016 Installed in a late 2008 unibody 13'' MacBook. Extremely straightforward install, and the performance of the computer has been restored to that of a new machine. Reliable and well functioning. Excellent purchase, well worth it.

Rating: 5/5 Worked like a charm! April 4, 2016 Installation was quick and easy. Transferring data was also really easy.

Only gripe I had was that Apple had to download a ton of stuff just to migrate the drive and this took literally all night long, so I had no laptop until then. Users of older models (mine is 6 years old) should put the laptop on ethernet wire (not wifi) during the migration or be prepared to wait a LOONNNGGGG time. Not OWC's fault... blame this on Apple.

Rating: 5/5 Easy Upgrade April 3, 2016 I have a 2009 MacBook Pro that I wanted to keep for many more years and not have to buy a new MBP. The SSD drive installation was easy with the tutorial videos and kit from OWC. The installation doubled the size of my hard drive and sped up the computer as well, which I especially notice when launching Parallels and Windows. I also exchanged the battery at the same time which was also a breeze with the tutorial videos. I highly recommend both. The $450 investment in both was a lot cheaper than $3000 for a new Mac!

Rating: 5/5 Reviving old Macbook March 20, 2016 Had a 2009 black macbook which was (rarely) in fantastic condition but not so fast. That all changed with this SSD install. It turned on, off and operated so quick it was impressive and far better than any other home or work computer I was dealing with. I upgraded the RAM to 4GB also at the same time and it made it a modern and capable laptop again.

Rating: 5/5 Excellent Drive. Easy Install March 17, 2016 I replaced a smaller SSD in my Mac Mini because I needed more room and did not want to fool with teaching my wife how to use two drives. This works flawlessly and is fast!

Rating: 5/5 Awesome Upgrade March 14, 2016 Easy installation, restored from Time Machine. Has made my 2012 MBP feel like a brand new machine. The speed is absolutely incredible, with all of my applications opening almost instantly. I have to run Windows 10 under Parallels for work from time to time, and time to desktop went from 3 to 4 minutes to about 20 seconds. Well worth every penny.

Rating: 5/5 Wow March 12, 2016 By my subject line, I'm referring to the entire experience. Easy ordering, fast delivery. But that's not even the best. I think a training video either on the OWC site or elsewhere indicated it shouldn't take more than 10 minutes. I didn't time myself but I think I had the old drive out (and in its new external case) and new drive in at around 3 to 7 minutes!. I highly recommend watching a video tutorial for the little but important tips about disconnecting and reconnecting the parts. Very nice that the correct tools were included to make it even faster. Then of course there's the SSD drive itself. My sluggish 3-year old Macbook Pro opens everything pretty much instantly now including startup.

Rating: 5/5 Fountain of Youth! March 11, 2016 It's had to describe the difference in performance of my MacBook Pro (15" mid 2012). I was beginning to think I should look at acquiring a new laptop. This one was getting painfully slow. After reading some other reviews about the impact of replacing the HDD with a SDD, I decided to give it a try. OMG!!! What a difference. I don't know if my system was nearly this fast when it was brand new.

The installation was simple and product has worked flawlessly. I would recommend this to anyone with a HDD based system.

Rating: 5/5 Like getting a new laptop... March 3, 2016 I had no idea how much time my MacBook Pro spent accessing the standard hard drive until I installed this SSD. Swapping out the drive made every application much much faster, especially boot up, that lasted for, well forever, and now is not 15 seconds. Installation was a breeze especially after I contacted a very helpful tech support team. I'm extremely pleased and happy that for about $350 I dramatically extended the life of my Mac and doubled the HD (1 TB vs 1/2)

Rating: 5/5 Great product and easy to install March 3, 2016 I have a late 2009 MacBook that I upgraded to 8GB of RAM and this drive. Using this site to locate and order the correct items, the quick delivery, and the videos to install made the process east and fast. I'm a 70 yr old female with no tech experience, but a DIY. One caution is that it takes a long time to transfer the data from the old drive so don't do this when you might need to use your computer right away. Another is that you need your network password in hand, so get that before you start. I have now upgraded to El Capitan and it's like having a new computer, albeit not as light as the new ones and it can't do air play, but I'm excited at how many applications I can run at the same time and how fast everything loads.
