Customer Reviews
I've always likes the Mercury line of drive enclosures and this one doesn't disappoint. The aluminum construction gives me confidence of heat being dissipated away from the drive, unlike a plastic enclosure. How many sellers of such devices include all the cabling for all supported interfaces while still keeping the price reasonable? I could probably count them on one finger. I'm primarily using Firewire 800 and have had no issues with connectivity or speed.

Don't get me wrong, it's a great little enclosure. Aluminum. Easy to swap out the HD with another (unlike the g-drives). Lots of connectivity options not really found anywhere else. Wish it was a bit smaller but probably not possible with all the cable connection options. However, it can't power a Seagate Momentus XT hybrid drive via USB without either: 1) Separate AC adapter (not included) or 2) a USB "Y" cable/adapter (not included) which allows you to power the enclosure and drive via two USB ports At this price they should include the Y cable to power the enclosure and drive. What a pain to deal with if you (like I was) are on a tight schedule... Radio Shack doesn't carry them in their stores, nor Best Buy. Fry's is your only option or reorder and repay for shipping via OWC. The cost is less than issue than the time.

This is an enclosure I bought to replace a stolen Macally one. It has a more recent chipset. Although I found its dimensions to be quite large for a 2.5" HDD when compared to a MyPassport, it doesn't seem that big, really. Plus, back pane space is actually used to place connectors. This also translate to lots of cooling space inside, and, in contrast to the other brand it replaced, a high-performance drive placed inside never got hot. It also looks like it can take much abuse before being unusable. Mine has a missing rubber feet, but nothing too important. Although I found S&H to be quite expensive for Canada, the enclosure seems well worth the cost. My only regrets being that, at this price point, it could have been future-proof by including USB 3. Plus, even deemed unnecessary, adding a power adapter and voltage regulator inside would be nice to avoid drawing too much power out of a laptop, especially when daisy-chained, as well as to protect from overvoltage. Suggestion: perhaps it would be possible to shave a bit of width by placing connectors vertically, or diagonally? Even internal space seems quite large to provide for adequate ventilation. Use it with: a high performance drive inside, such as SSD, 7200RPM platter HDD Overkill with: stock 5400rpm drives. Old drives that are slow.
