FileSalvage
FileSalvage v6 by SubRosaSoft - If you've lost data and you need to get it back, FileSalvage is your best choice. FileSalvage is the ultimate Mac OS X tool for data recovery. It recovers deleted files, damaged or missing volumes and even formatted disks!

FileSalvage 6 is a set of extremely powerful data recovery tools designed to restore files that have been accidentally deleted, become unreadable due to media faults, or stored on a drive before it was re-initialized or formatted. It is device and file system independent, allowing the users to
recover files from a normal Mac OS hard drive, USB key, Linux disk, Windows drive, FLASH card, scratched CD, and almost any other media or file system that can be recognized in Mac OS X.

FileSalvage 6 adds the ability for the user to define their own custom file type. To recover a file format that is not in the current list of supported and known types, the user simply drags & drops a dozen or so files of the same format into FileSalvage to analyze and process. Upon completion, the new profile will be added to the known formats. This flexibility enables the user to recover files created by applications that are either too new or uncommon to be initially supported by FileSalvage 6.

FileSalvage 6 also adds the ability to search for embedded files. Already a feature found in SubRosaSoft’s MacForensicsLab, searching embedded files will yield files contained within other files, such as web caches or mbox format email folders. This new feature will allow the user to recover more files.

The latest update of FileSalvage is available on a dual-boot bootable DVD that will start up from either a Power PC or Intel based Macintosh.

Written specifically for Mac OS X, FileSalvage 6 includes powerful features that give the user excellent flexibility and control in data recovery.

System Requirements:
Apple Macintosh Computer
Mac OS X 10.3 or higher (built for Tiger 10.4)
256MB of RAM
External hard drive or networked drive to save salvaged files to.
CD/DVD-ROM Drive (for CD Installation or Boot DVD)

FileSalvage can recover most deleted files which have not subsequently been written over. Due to the way data is distributed when being written to a drive, there are still a decent chance of recovering your files even if you have a copied small amount of data onto your drive since deleting the files.

Safety first - FileSalvage will never write to the disk or device you are salvaging data from. This makes the software risk free, as it does not attempt to repair a disk but instead simply reads it, and copies the relevant files to a destination of your chosing.
Works anywhere - FileSalvage is device and file system independent. You can recover files from a hard drive, digital camera, USB key, PC disk, FLASH card, scratched CD's, and most storage media that work with your computer.
Searches free space - On HFS+ volumes, the user can limit FileSalvage to scan only the free space of a volume to recover files from. This produces huge speed efficiency and means that the task of recovering files can be accomplished much quicker. By default, “Undelete” scans for “free space” whilst “Salvage” will scan the entire space on a device.
Recovers files after a disk or device has been formatted - Got an initialized disk or other device that had files you want back? No problem, as long as you didn't perform a secure erase, FileSalvage will recover your files from the newly initialized drive.
Recovers files from corrupt media - Data corruption does not stop FileSalvage from working. In fact it will happily process an entire corrupted file system for intact data and recover whole or partial files wherever it finds them.
FileSalvage works on faulty hardware - FileSalvage can also recover data from mechanically unsound devices. The software uses several tried and tested methods, which in addition SubRosaSoft has improved upon, to read the same piece of information and to automatically skip of areas of the file system that are fully unreadable. By employing these methods, FileSalvage is able to recover data from sources that may have appeared to other software to be too physically broken to use.
File Preview - Allows you to preview the files before you recover them.

FileSalvage should be your first option to recover your important data, before you risk your data trying to repair the disk.

Recovers files from devices even if they fail to mount or only partially operate.
Recover your whole device or just the files you have recently deleted.
Does not alter the original device.
Simple streamlined user interface.

Can FileSalvage work on the same physical disk from which the system has booted?

Yes, you can run FileSalvage on any locally connected drive. You will need another drive (such as a network connected drive, external drive, or Apple iDisk) to store the data recovered.

Does this mean I do not need to backup my data?

No safety system can beat the security of having a regular backup. SubRosaSoft strongly recommends you check your disk for integrity (using Apple's DiskUtility or Prosoft's Drive Genius) and back up your drive often using applications such as SubRosaSoft's CopyCatX.

-More info about CopyCat X-
  • Create exact duplicates of your hard drive, Apple iPod, or Mac OS X startup drive. CopyCatX is the fastest way to duplicate devices in most formats on your Apple Macintosh computer.
Duplicate your boot drive.

  • The fastest software duplication system for Mac OS X. CopyCatX is extremely fast. It works on drives that other systems cannot recover by using our proprietary resumable/fault tolerant algorithms.
Lightning fast backup and restore.
  • Backups include every single detail of the original including permissions, icons, placement, and content.
Automatic block matching for damaged media (such as scratched data CDs or physically damaged hard drives).

Unlike most backup programs which copy file-by-file, CopyCatX utilizes a method called device copying. Device copying enables you to retain every detail of the original volume. It's a lot faster than the traditional method of backing up file-by-file. When duplicating a volume, CopyCatX is smart enough to skip all the blank space of a drive during the copying process to further improve the speed.

Built to be tough - CopyCatX can create disk images from damaged media using a proprietary algorithm to work around media faults. Even when the drive is so sick it can't all be done in one pass. Use the resume function to carry on when the drive has cooled.
Built for speed - Our tests show CopyCatX to be the fastest software drive duplication system for Mac OS X. But don't just take our word on that - download the free trial version here.
Built for simplicity - CopyCatX is designed to get you doing what you want to as easily as possible. Most functions can be started with just a few clicks of the mouse.
Built for Mac OS X - Designed specifically for Apple Mac OS X 10.3 or higher.

CopyCatX can copy all the contents of your old iPod to a newer larger iPod

CopyCatX is intended to be used on random access devices such as hard drives, iPods, and flash media. It will not work with devices such as tape, CD, or DVD.

Easy-to-use interface simplifies the duplication process to a few clicks.
Extremely fast duplication using low level copying.
Perfect clone of device retains every detail of the original drive or volume.
Duplicate volume or device to disk image.
Cross Platform Device Copy allows Microsoft Windows, Tivo, and Linux drives to be cloned using a Mac.
Proprietary resizing technology to regain lost space after a volume copy.

System Requirements:
Apple Macintosh Computer
Mac OS X 10.3 or higher (built for Tiger 10.4)

Can CopyCatX work on the same physical disk from which the system has booted?

No. Unless you are duplicating to an image, CopyCatX needs to unmount both the source and destination drive before proceeding with the duplication process. When duplicating to an image, CopyCatX will need the source device or volume to be unmounted.

Can CopyCatX copy the active startup volume/device to another hard drive?

No, CopyCatX requires the source and the target volumes to be unmounted before proceeding with the duplication.

Can you clone a partition without the data folders?

CopyCatX doesn't allow selection of files and folders for backup. You can back up a volume or a complete device.

Can I use CopyCatX to backup a UFS Volume?

Yes, but only in device mode.

What is the best way to back up a Boot Camp drive?

Duplicate the drive or volume to a disk image.

I am trying to duplicate a volume on the startup disk, and CopyCatX gives an error with the message "Unable to unmount". What gives?

In order to backup a volume on the startup disk, you will need to startup from another disk and run CopyCatX there.

Will CopyCatX work with software RAID?

No. The current version of CopyCatX will not be able to duplicate any software RAID arrays but will work with many hardware controlled RAID setups.
