Got a new Firewire drive and went to set it up for OS X, but it won't install OS 9.1 on it. It also won't low level format it; just seems to erase it. Also, the "update driver option in Drive Setup is grayed out. Is this normal for Firewire drives? |

It's external drive on pci Firewire card on PowerMac 9600. Tried Drive Setup 1.9.2.. Used Norton 6.0 and it said there was a major problem and then said it fixed it, but I'm not so sure. Why can't I update driver or install an operating system? |

... more details as to what Mac and what FW controller etc? What did you try to use to initialize it? FW is ATA, ATA cannot be LLF, only SCSI. The only need is to map out bad blocks IF you think there is a problem. It could take a full day. Some folks put the drive inside on IDE controller, use Drive Setup 2.07, then put it in FW case. Also, booting isn't supported on FW until after the B&W - some people are trying to get around that with varying success and luck using XPF 3 it seems. |
