Trouble Upgrading Classic to 9.2.1 |

My system is 7600 w/ Sonnet 700MHz G4, 576MB RAM, 36GB IBM Ultrstar HD w/ 4 partitions [Mac OS X, Mac Classic (9.1) , Spare, and Mac OS 9.1], original CD-ROM,4MB logic board video, and an external SCSI Zip100 drive. Here's another problem! When I try to upgrade my Classic partition to 9.2.1, nothing happens!!? Running in OS 10.2 with Classic started up, I insert the 9.2.1 Update CD. After a few clicks I end up at the "Mac OS Install" icon. When I double click on this icon, absolutely nothing happens (other than the icon gets selected)! Nothing seems to get the installer going. If I try the same process with the 9.2.2 update software, the installer will launch OK but then of course I get a message telling me I must install 9.2.1 first. If I try updating Classic to 9.2.1 from my regular OS 9.1partition, I get the old "you can't install it on this machine" message. Any suggestions? Should I try the OS9Forever software? If so, how? TIA. John Hixson |

Since I never heard anything more on specifically how to update the OpenGL stuff in 9.1, I went ahead with the long download. It took two tries to get it, but finally I had the necessary smi's. With them on my desktop I was able with the help of OS9Helper to quickly install both 9.2.1 and 9.2.2 on both my Classic and my OS 9 partitions. Now I'm cool with everything up-to-date on my machine. Thanks for reading. John Hixson |

To joevt: I've persued the kind of advice you're giving enough times to know that it mostly doesn't work unless it's very specific and complete (not that I don't appreciate your offering!). Can you tell me where to get the specifics for what you're suggesting? Thanks. John Hixson |

You can get the same Open GL support in 9.1 for the Radeon card by copying Open GL related extensions from 9.2. |

Why bother? I use 9.1 for classic and it seems to work AOK. Why do you NEED to update? Marty |

To jonz: What you suggest is probably correct. At least that's kinda what their (OS9Helper's) instructions seem to say. And therein lies the problem in that the Update CD doesn't have smi's on it. Maybe I'll wait til late tonight and go to bed while downloading 9.2.1 update. |

"and don't want to go through the eternity of downloading the update smi's" I haven't used OS9forever for a while (haven't needed to !), but I seem to remember that you have to have the smi on the desktop for it to work. May be wrong. |

Great idea in theory but it just isn't working out. I'm trying to use OS9Helper 1.0b8 together with a 9.2.1 Update CD as I only have a dial-up connection and don't want to go through the eternity of downloading the update smi's. Anyway when I click on the OS9H "Begin Installation" button, the process seems to start (but verrrry slowly) as indicated by the progress bar. After about 10 minutes (and 1/2" of progress bar!) the process stops with an error message something about not having chosen the correct language! At this point I give up until I can get more guidance. Thanks. John Hixson |

Should I try the OS9Forever software? Yes ! Use that to install 9.2.1/2 on your 9.1 partition, get rid of the Classic 9.1, and let OS X choose the new 9.2.2 as the "classic". That's what I have done and it works flawlessly. |
