Serious 10.2.5 install/boot problems... |

I've had the worst time getting 10.2.5 to work on my 9500. For background, it has a 300 MHz G3 ZIF in a CarrierZIF from ZLR8, 784 MB of deliberately semi-interleaved RAM, (3) Samsung 120 GB SpinPoint ATA/100 drives connected to a SIIG ATA/133 card, a PC Radeon 7000 that has been flashed, an OWC FireWire card, a SIIG USB 1.1 card, and a RealTek 8139c network card. Whenever I try to run the update, it totally crashes the installer, and in most cases, completely ruins the system. I've tried installing from my 10.2 retail CDs and updating to 10.2.5 and it has the same result. Installing from my 10.2.4 installer disks (a *cough* nonreleased build) it runs fine, then pukes when I try to do the update. There are no reproducible kernel panics or console dumps that I can get a hold of, so I apologize for not being able to describe the situation further. I ran 10.2.4 quite well on my box with no troubles, and I hear the 10.2.5 generally runs well too. I'm going to look into possible hard disk problems, but does anyone have ideas? It's killing me! |

I notice this message from Apple today re 10.2.6. viz. " You may experience unexpected results if you have installed third-party system software modifications, or if you have modified the operating system through other means. This precautionary statement does not apply to the normal installation of application software." I thought I was being a bit paranoid re all this but it would appear from this statement that Apple are seeking to torpedo XPF & Sonnet's chances of getting past 10.2.4 or 10.2.5 for those who can get that far. |

Ian , I sympathise. I have had exactly the same experience on my 9500 (twice) with 10.2.5 using a Sonnet G4 700 Acard ATA 66 card and an Apple DVD ROM . The damage inflicted on the drive was extensive and hints at a degree of malevolent intent. Fortunately it was a new drive without any valuable data. I was running no other PCI cards during the upgrade and had had no such major problem prior to this episode getting to 10.2.4 Has anyone had a similar problem with 10.2.5 on any other models??? |

Unless all the ram is interleaved, the the system runs as non interleaved... You only get the speed benefit when the system sees all it's ram is interleaved at boot. I think the realtek theory is a good possibility, since I had to scrap mine as it also was sketchy... Bold enough to try the 10.25 update? Marty |

Well, 10.2.4 is running well on the box once again. The only thing I have problems with is very large transfers from my PowerBook G3 500 to an internal drive using target disk mode. The Finder on the 9500 has the tendency to quit for some reason in the middle of a transfer, leaving it partially completed without a sign of failure, except from missing files in the destination. Hehe. My suggestion from this experience is DO NOT do multiple copies of over a couple hundred megs. My machine doesn't even like 2 transfers of 3-6 gigs each. Eek! |

Well, portions of the RAM are interleaved. Not all of the banks are, and as I understand it, you can have two banks interleaved and two banks non-interleaved. I might try to pull the RealTek card if I can't get 6J73 working again. Poopie. Although, I do wonder if the USB card has something to do with it. I'll check it out. Thanks! |

Try disabling your RealTek card. I've had bad luck with their network chips. Better to reduce a variable. You may want to zap your PRAM while you're at it and reinstall your XPF extensions and BootX under OS 9. |

Strange.... No such thing as "semi-interleaved" much like "semi-pregnant". There is a problem with the 10.25 USB kext, but that shouldn't stop the installer.... Sounds like you should stay at 10.24 and wait for 10.26 to try again? Sorry not very helpful I know. Marty |
