Hi, This is a great resource and I'm glad I joined. I have a PMac 7300 with a Newertech G4 400, Radeon PCI 7000, and a MacAlly PCI/USB 2.0 card, 704 MB ram. Today I was able to boot the computer off of the Mac OS X v10.2 Upgrade/Install Disc 1 disc, following the "Preparing To Use XPostFacto" notes. Since that is only an updater disc, which needs an existing OS X install to work, I could only go as far as selecting the destination disc. But, at least it booted up. When I went back and used the Mac OS X Install disc, v.10.1.3, (I also tried v.10.1.2), I could only get as far as the black screen on restart. The MacAlly card worked with the 10.2 disc as far as booting up. Having it in or out made no difference with the earlier OS install discs or with 10.2. The computer easily reboots back to OS 9.2.2. Do I need a newer install disc, v. 10.2 or higher? Once an OS X version is installed, is it a simple matter of running the updater off of the updater CD? One other "problem" since installing 9.2.2 and the Radeon 7000, is that to boot up, the power up button must by pressed and then the Control/Option/Powerup button (RESTART) combo must be pressed to complete the initial booting up, otherwise it sits there with a black screen. This occurrs with the old and new firmware and software updates for the Radeon 7000. T |

I did run DiskWarrior and TechTool Pro 3.0.9, neither should significant problems with the FW drive. In 9.2.2 I was getting the "drive appears to be damaged" dialog and would still get freezes when copying from or trying to delete files from the drive. I then booted to 10.2.5 and was able to successfully Trash some files, but then as I was copying files from the FW drive I got hung with the spinning rainbow ball and had to restart. I will check the drive on one of my G4's to make sure its not the culprit. In the mean time I would like to know if the MacAlly USB 2.0/FW card has been working for others. I also wanted to get clear about the proper L2 cache setting. Currently the Maxpower control is set to: 1) Cache: 200.MHz (400/2), This ratio can be changed or disabled. with buttons Write-back(faster) ON, Write-through OFF, its one or the other. 2) Motherboard cache(256k off) The On if larger than backside is ON, and there are dedicated On or Off buttons to the right which are off. 3) Memory timing optimization is set for 70ns, with Off and 60ns(faster) options These are defaults. What settings do I need to setup L2CacheConfig? Thanks, Kenny |

The new Radeon firmware should not affect FireWire but 9.2.2 might. Try 9.1 instead. Maybe try using Disk Warrior. |

Hi joevt, I am running 10.2.5 with the NewerTech G4 400, Radeon PCI 7000, and the Macally USB/FW pci card. When I went back to 9.2.2 and tried to trash files from the FW drive connected to the MacAlly card, I get consistent freezes. This happens when copying files back from the FW drive, although I was able to successfully copy back some files. Before the OS X install I had successfully backed up files from the 7300 to the FW drive. The only other thing I did was to update the Radeon 7000 firmware to the new version. Before all this I had successfully burned CD-Rs use the MacAlly card, but had never used a FW drive. I have noticed other threads concerning the new firmware for the Radeon 7000, and am wondering if this is one of those problems. So far, this is the only problem that has emerged, but I don't know if it is really connected with the new firmware. The computer runs fine with the FW drive on the desktop as long as I don't use it as I have described. Thanks, |

Is the Newertech Control Panel for OS 9? For OS X, you can use L2CacheConfig or PowerLogix Cache Control X. There's a "Newer MAXpowr G3 1.0" for OS X but I don't know anything about that or what's on your NewerPower img. They might be too old for 10.2. I keep Write Back off because it's faster but using "On" is supposed to be more compatible... You have to use a utility like Carbon Copy Cloner to make a backup of an OS X disk if you expect the backup to boot. I think some people use Retrospect. You can't boot off a firewire drive yet. |

I was able to install and boot 10.2.5 on the 7300. As far as configuring the L2 Cache, I wanted to make sure I have the Newertech Control Panel set properly. Currently it is set to WRITE BACK, Motherboard cache(256k off) ON if larger than backside, FOR 70ns memory timing. Do I just turn the Motherboard cache ON for L2Cache.config. I also have a NewerPower img. file that apparently works in OS X, but I not sure if it works in 10.2 and above. Also, when I did a backup of my 10.2.5 disk to a firewire drive, I got a couple of dialog boxes saying that certain things wouldn't be copied over. Does that mean I can't use that backup if I need it? Thanks For Your Help, K |

Thanks joevt! I do have OWC 128's and somewhere noticed that the Radeon 7000 isn't compatabile from 10.1.3 down. I'll try your tips and will see what happens. By the way, I've been entering the forum through a paste from an OWC email which logs me in under someone else's name. I'll log in properly next time. K |

If you have 704 MB of RAM then you must be using some 128 MB DIMMs. Are they from OWC? In my 8600, I usually have to type control command power after a warm restart. I have no problems with cold restart. Try installing 10.1.3 with the monitor connected to the built in video port instead of the Radeon 7000. Once you install 10.1, try installing 10.2. If it requires a restart but won't restart, then go back to OS 9 and use XPostFacto to boot the 10.2 update. If you have any more failures, try using XPostFacto from 9.1. |
