Old World (9500) and RealTek crashes with AFP? |

I have a PowerMac 9500 that has got, at various times, 1 or 2 RealTek 8139-series network cards in it. While setting up the machine, I was able to use the built-in 10Mbit ethernet with great results. Between my PB G3/500 and the 9500, with a 10/ 100 switch in the middle, I was getting between 6 and 7 Mbits/sec upstream from my G3 (according to NetMonitor.) Definitely a good thing, since the theoretical maximum is 10Mbit. When I use the RealTek card and the driver version 1.1.3, and I try to initiate a file transfer TO the 9500, it locks the machine and I have to reboot both computers. Has anyone else noticed this? It's happened on every version of 10.2 that I can remember, and it's starting to bug me. Maybe if others have noticed this, we can point it out to RealTek and hopefully get them to fix it. Thanks! |

I bought two of the ZX345s from WeirdStuff, got them yesterday, and installed them. They work wonderfully! No drivers needed, and I copied about 30 GB of .avi DIVX files to the server in just 2 hours. It was getting a sustained upstream from my laptop above 20Mbits/sec., which is pretty darn good all things considered. I would highly recommend anyone who needs fast ethernet to get a few of those cards! |

I just checked. Weirdstuff still has the ZX345's. They are $14.95. I think I'll probably buy another one as that is $5 cheaper than the one I have now. |

From Zynx (http://www.znyx.com/products/hardware/zx340q-faq.htm): The ZX340 series of multiport PCI adapters was discontinued in 1998. It was replaced by the ZX340Q series adapters (note the 'Q' suffix, identifying the current products). The discontinued ZX340 series adapters are no longer available. The old ZX340 series employed the Intel/DEC 21140 MAC chip, which was discontinued by Intel. The new ZX340Q series uses Intel's 21143 MAC chips which offer improved performance and built-in 10/100 Mbps speed autonegotiation. The current ZX340Q series product line includes the following 10/100 Mbps Ethernet adapters which provide the same, or better, functionality as their earlier 'non-Q' counterparts: ZX345Q single port ZX348Q dual port ZX346Q quad port The current ZX340Q product line offers an even greater range of standard driver and RAINlink driver compatibility. However, Macintosh users please note that none of the current ZX340Q series adapters support Mac OS, Mac OS X, or Mac OS X Server. Back to EBay? Bryce |

I'll definitely look into the Zynx. Is yours the 345? If so, I'll buy a ton of em if I cannot get this resolved through RealTek. I am going to email, and I think the more emails they recieve, the better. Shoot something to nicfae@realtek.com.tw and hopefully they can fix the bug. Gotta ruffle the feathers! |

I got the same thing. I use a 7500 with macos x server. The original 'mace' nic and a realtek card. At certain moment everything blocks, and I have to restart to. Sometimes I can just pretend that I change something in the network pref pane and apply this. Then I have my connection back. I use this one as a router but for now it is bearly useable. Also someone for me a solution available? René |

Yes. I have experienced this problem too with my Power Tower Pro 225. I had to replace the card with a DEC 21xx chip based card. The Realtek card worked fine for internet traffic and connecting to other machines via ethernet but as soon as I tried a file transfer networking died on both machines forcing reboots. There has to be a problem with the driver. For a time I thought it was a problem between 10.1.5 on my wife's iBook and Jaguar on my machine until I tried a file transfer from my Linux file server. Same thing. I had to reboot both machines. A few months ago someone posted here about this problem in another thread saying that he'd replaced his Realtek card. Following his recommendation I replaced mine with a Zynx 10/100 card which is based on the DEC chip. I got it from weirdstuff.com. Zynx was an OEM supplier to Apple so their cards work without 3rd party drivers in both OSX and OS9.x. |
