No, it's not just the street address of the greatest computer corporation in the world... ... it appears to be my boot loader at this moment in time. I was able to successfully install Jaguar, and I had even started setting some of my preferences (arranging monitors, positioning the Dock, etc.). Then, it appears that my FireWire CD-ROM disagreed with the OS and locked up the system when I tried to run the OS 10.2.5 complete updater from disc (it started the update, but locked). So, I rebooted. Now, it's just not happening. I'll probably need to start the process over, but what went wrong? Here's what keeps looping on my boot up. It gets past "Welcome to Macintosh" and the initialization of services in the progression of the boot (which would appear to be a success...), but we get the following after the call to /sbin/autodiskmount[330] for the final volume: May 7 01:15:25 Dave-Soumass-Computer init: getty repeating too quickly on port /dev/console, sleeping May 7 01:15:26 Dave Soumass-Computer /usr/libexec/ crashreporterd: crashdump terminated by signal 5 May 7 01:15:57 Dave-Soumass-Computer last message repeated 2 times May 7 01:15:58 Dave Soumass-Computer /usr/libexec/ crashreporterd: crashdump terminated by signal 5 May 7 01:15:58 Dave-Soumass-Computer init: getty repeating too quickly on port /dev/console, sleeping May 7 01:15:59 Dave Soumass-Computer /usr/libexec/ crashreporterd: crashdump terminated by signal 5 May 7 01:16:30 Dave-Soumass-Computer last message repeated 2 times May 7 01:16:31 Dave Soumass-Computer /usr/libexec/ crashreporterd: crashdump terminated by signal 5 May 7 01:16:31 Dave-Soumass-Computer init: getty repeating too quickly on port /dev/console, sleeping May 7 01:16:32 Dave Soumass-Computer /usr/libexec/ crashreporterd: crashdump terminated by signal 5 ... Rinse and repeat... Anyway... what's going on here? Can it be fixed, or did I just fubar the filesystem? Thanks! - Dave |

Ryan, Re-installed the OS and everything is hunky dunky. My 10.2.5 Combo Updater was interrupted at the FIreWire bus. It would appear that I have an issue with my FireWire Card. I'll take it up in a new thread. At any rate, I'd recommend that you copy the updaters to the Hard Drive prior to running to ensure you don't have the problem of not being able to recover. On the plus side, all of my preference were retained from the previous installation (as you had said). In all, it was just an hour of fixes. Thanks again, Ryan. - Dave |

I have had one other report of this, also when a system update was in progress but failed part way through. I suspect that something has been left in an inconsistent state (some software got installed, but others didn't, or something like that). You may need to reinstall 10.2 to get back to where you were (you should be able to preserve some of your user settings). |
