XPF/OS 10.2.2 on 7500/XLR8 G3-400/Built-in audio controller/powered speakers. The only sounds I get are streaming real audio through Real PlayerOne and the startup chime. No sound in Quicktime, no MP3 sound in iTunes, no .wav file sound w/any player, no system speech, alerts or effects. Everything worked fine in 9x. Any ideas? |

I did some reading in the archives but couldn't get any clear sense of a "common link" between the various system configurations with this problem. I'm running a 9 GB Cheetah off a MilesU2W so EIDE is not my problem. The thing that gets me is why does streaming real audio work when nothing else does? That's got to be a significant clue for the techsperts out there. I might wait for the next version of XPF to see if there's a fix, but I'm also keeping an eye on eBay for a cheap(and Apple supported)G/3. Thanks for the input. |

This is a well-documented problem, but I don't see an easy way to search the archives. If my memory serves me, it breaks down into two categories. One category is no control over sound via sound panel, so external speakers are a workaround, although at least one person reported cutting the wire to the internal speaker. The second category centered aroung machines with an upgraded ATA PCI card, usually a 100 or 133. There never was a fix posted, but I haven't looked in about 3 months... Learn to live with it or switch to SCSI drives (yeah, right -- after you just plunked down cash for a new EIDE setup), as I believe they were the ones with problem #1. If you find the answer, please post it, and you will become known as nearly as awesome a guru as Ryan Rempel! |

Common problem. Sonnet says "We are aware of sound bugs in the older machines running under OS X. We have been looking at the issue for a while and are not sure if there is anything that can be done. Keep an eye on the support part of the web page for updates." I only get startup chimes and system beeps for a few minutes, then nothing. System.log shows entries like: ..IOAudioStream[0x1c32000]::clipIfNecessary() - Error: attempting to clip to a position more than one buffer ahead of last clip position (1a,2878)->(1c,25d). ... IOAudioStream[0x1c32000]::clipIfNecessary() - adjusting clipped position to (1b,2878) Look in system.log and see if you find similar entries. |

Changed sound preferences/rebooted/changed them back and system sounds worked, but only for a few seconds. Click on anything and they're gone again. |

I've a nearly identical system, although I've a G4 chip and run 10.2.6. I've never had a problem with lack of sound out on this system under 10.1, 10.1.3, 10.15, 10.2.0, 10.2.3, or 10.2.5. I trust you've checked that the sound System preferences are properly set? That the volume out is not muted? Try changing all those preferences, then changing them back, as there have been reports of some systems controls needing a reset that way to work properly. iTunes and system alerts work for me. re system alerts, note the delay built in: if you don't wait long enough, they won't sound. |
