I was having similar problems on installing 10.2 on a Rev A Beige G3 upgraded with a 500MHz G4 ZIF. I had got the "can't open" stuff. Removed RAM but one stick and all installed PCI cards (FW 400 and USB1.0, separate cards). Still no joy. Used the XPF 3 beta, worked like a champ first time, running very well at this point, Thank you very much. |

Have you tried an OF reset? to reset nvram, use the "init-nvram" and then the other two commands (set- defaults, reset-all) and see if that helps. It did for me. |

What is the firmware update needed for the beige g3? I'm figuring I'm outdated and having a hard time getting 10.2 to install due to a kernel panic looks like relating to the onboard ati rage video card |

Beige G3 (rev A even!), using ATTO UL2D OEM w/ 1.6.4 firmware, LVD SCSI drives. 3 x 256MB PC100 8 ns Crucial, Mac Radeon... zero trouble. Have also used stock IDE 4 GB and a 40GB Deskstar (60GXP, soon to be replaced with 120GXP). Didn't use XPF. I used Sonnet Tuneup for G4/500 cache though. |

I had a similar problem. I attempted successfully to install OSX on a stock Beige-G3, and I had no trouble, but when I reformatted the Drive, the installer would install, but the computer failed to reboot!!! The following was discovered. On a G3, the hard drive has a special track with information on it which allows the system to boot and install OSX without assistance from XPF. However, if you use Techtool-Lite to zap the pram and then reformat with a low-level format and zero all data; you lose the ability to install OSX. You then must use XPF to install it. I had no problems with it including loading OSX.2.3! This same scenario is echoe'd double if you buy a new HD without it coming from Apple first . Remember, there is no eprom in a Beige-G3 so there is no hardware place to install firmware. Any firmware sent to you will have no usefulness unless it is small enough to place in Pram, or can be installed on a special track of the HD as when the Apple-sourced drive was new . Hope that info helps! |

I had been running 10.1.5 on my beige desktop G3 with a 467 MHz accelerator for about eight months with no problem. However, Jaguar sent the screen black after various times from five to twenty minutes into the install even with all PCI cards removed. Then I read about screens going black on Apple's Discussion pages during Jaguar install with the following result. I made sure all the energy functions and screen savers were off but the key to making the thing work seems to be to remove all RAM cards but one and the reason is that the install process seems to be sensitive to different card speeds. Jaguar installed corrrectly so I immediately downloaded 10.2.5 and installed it. Then I restored all RAM and PCI cards. Subsequently I installed 10.2.6 with no special procedures. |

Scratch the firmware update, it was for a wide Scsi card which i do not have on mine, I'm back to square 1....should I install 10.1 and then try again. It didn't work before but then again I wasn't using XPF. I'm on the verge of staying with 10.1 but I hate that others have been successful. I NEED to do this. Thanks again. Paul |

Just got off the phone with apple support and the tech was kind enough to help me , I think. The manual recommends you do a firmware update which I assumed I would get through the software update on 9.2. He said this is not necessarily so. He emailed me the firmware update which I will install as soon as I get my ethjernet card back in to download it. My next question is do I have to uninstall XPF first to see if all it was was a firmware update. I remember reading about removing something while in OS 9 but not for the life of me can I find it. Oh, I re formatted my HD getting rid of 10.1 to do a fresh install so I no longer have it on my hard drive but should this firmware update not work I can re-install no problem. Thanks for the quick response. Paul |

First of all don't worry about those error messages about "patched scsi device ..." They refer to two XPF extensions which only load under 10.0.x and 10.1.x - they are not required and intentionally do not load under 10.2.x. If you want to get rid of the messages then remove the files PatchIOSCSICDDrive.kext and PatchedSCSIDeviceType05.kext from the /SystemLibrary/Extensions folder after you get 10.2 installed. The message "Still waiting for root device" indicates that there is a problem accessing the boot device that you have selected. Can you clarify for me - is this after applying the 10.2 update to your running 10.1 system or is it when trying to do a fresh install of 10.2 from the CD? It sounds like you're doing a fresh install from the 10.2 CD. If this is the case then try booting 10.1 from your successful installation and then applying 10.2 as an upgrade to that system. It's possible there's a problem with your 10.2 CD which prevents it booting. |
