Normal or is my HD on the way out? |

My firewire HD likes to not work randomly (its the switch/Power supply, and not the problem here) but every once and a while (about 2-3 times a week) it will manage to bring down the system and when i restart my start up drive fails the basic drive test. in verbose mode it says, Checking disk Missing thread record (id = 43799) Orphaned indirect node temp525048 invalid directory count (should be 16665 instead of 16668) invalid volume directory count (it should be 16668 instead of 16665) then after a few minutes of repairs it continues with start up. This is a hassle, but i would like to know if a reformat will fix it or if it is about to crap out, like my other HD did. If a reformat will fix it i am going to wait until XPF3 comes out so that i don't have to mess with reformatting it twice. Thanks, Jim |

I know the firewire problem is with the switch because when you turn it on after the night it gill sometimes not mount, but if it does it will then die within 5 min and i have to turn it off and on again a few times to get it to mount again. I am going to try to fix it when i get the time. as for moving the Fireiwr card, that can not happen because i only have 2 PCI slots that work under OSX. ther are 4 in the system but if all PCI cards are not on the 2 on the left it will not start. then my PCI video card (Radeon) will only alow the thing to boot if it is in the first slot, so where my Fireire card goes has to be the one place. I would just like to be able to use my internal SCSI drive as the helper drive in XPF3 so that i don't have to mess with putting it on my OS9 drive. Thanks for the input, Jim |

I had exactly the same errors with my UL2D and IBM 18Gb hd. Since I moved the card to another PCI slot, everithing worked great ... maybe you can try other slots for the firewire card. |

I have run TTP3, and fsck on it in the last few weeks, and have tried Nortan but always crashes before i tell it to do anything, i don't think that buying Disk Warrior would be worth it because the drive is worth pennies today as it is old and only 3GB. I will reformat it when XPF3 comes out to see if that will help because i would prefer to have it rather than use my OS9 disk which is only 2GB for the helper drive, but it should work seence the whole system does not get installed on it, Right? I don't use OS9 anymore any way, but it is a good thing tohave as a back up... This is anouther reason for Firewire booting, my Firewire Drive is 120GB, and i would like to actually be able to use my home folder. Will the OS9 helper get firewire booting any time soon? I will get that if it does and move everything off of my old internal drives and to my Firewire drive. Thanks for the help, Jim |

Those errors are a sign of directory damage on your boot volume. Try the following: Boot into single user mode and run fsck until all errors are gone. If that doesn't fix it for good, try a disk utility like Disk Warrior or Techtool Pro running under OS 9. If the errors come back, then your drive may indeed be failing. The last resort is a reformat, but if the drive's really failing, you may not want to go to all that trouble. |
