Ethernet card, PCI slots, and clones |

Well this isn't exactly XPF related... I wanted to bump up my PTP from 10 base T to 100 base T, installed an Asante 696 ethernet card. I can see the card in profiler, installed all the latest drivers etc, it simply won't establish an IP address to get online. I tried the tech support at Asante and they gave me some PCI slot runaround saying the PCI cards need to be in the "bus master" slot of A1, with no other PCI cards in the top 3 slots. I tried this, still nothing. Then eventually they told me they only support clones up through system 8.1.. so uh, was the PCI slot info complete bs? Or maybe it's a matter of finding a more compatible card? I have an older AsanteFast 10/100 card I tried briefly but got the same result, the router doesn't "see" the card or asign it it's own IP address so I can't get online, although I can transfer files with file sharing and timbuktu. Anyone who's got an ethernet card upgrade in a clone or 9500 series I'd appreciate any advice. Thanks. I did try both OS 9.2.2 and OS X. PTP with XLR8 450 upgrade, Sonnet ata 66 in slot 4, XLR8 firewire PCI card in 5, ATI Radeon 7K in slot 6. Useless ethernet card in slot A1. |

Interesting. I figured Asante was lying when I got about 4 different stories about PCI slots from them, told to use appletalk only, delete TCP/IP preferences and other runarounds, only to be finally followed with the caveat that they only support... ahem, up to 8.2. Was there even a 8.2? I thought it was 8.1, then 8.5. Whatever, scumbags. I only wasted 23 bucks here on OWC, and $5 on the older card. I would think since OWC are hosting what is in fact a very clone-oriented subculture of OSX users, they might say, warn people of the imminent dangers of using such a buggy device. Another brick in my wall of spare dead antiquated computer parts. Anyway fellas, I appreciate the info. I knew I'm not so dumb as to not be able to install a friggin' PCI card when I got OS X running on a 8 year old beast. And I just snagged a Kingston card for $5 off ebay, so I'm good. Thanks again. |

The DEC card is the way to go. I bought 2 of the ZNYX cards from WeirdStuff.com, and it works perfectly. Screw RealTek and Asante, DEC is the key to a working machine. |

Yes. What you are referring to is the Asante sh*t-fest. I personally paid $79 Canadian for one of their Friendly Net 690 PCI Cards. It worked just fine under MOS9.1, but not MOSX. When I phoned them, I got a similar answer about Bus Mastering, and that I couldn't have any cards in Slot 2 of my Powerbase. Funny, I only have 3 slots. Video, USB, Network. I cannot simply ditch one card for theirs. But I did manage to try, and even with slot 2 free, even with slot 1 AND 2 free, and then the Asante card in *each* and every slot, it still gave me a Kernel panic and wouldn't properly request a IP from my router (I have onboard video). So I phoned them again. This time, they stated that their products were not tested and certified on Clones. They said they couldn't help me. Sooo. My Asante card is sitting in its box on my desk. Go try and find a Kingston KNE100TX (NOT KNE110TX). They are DEC Based 10/100 cards, and work absolutly flawless. MOSX has the drivers preinstalled (they come with the OS, makes my life easier), and they are readily available for Mac OS 7-9.2. Its a pretty generic card being DEC Based and all. I snagged one off Ebay for $8 US +S/H ($3). Sure beats the $79 Asante card. |
