Just to be belligerent, XPF does indeed boot off of the hard drive. Ryan has plainly explained this a few times. (Note the Techtool Pro 3 discussion for a recent explanation.) To check for yourself, anyone erase your hard drive using the formatter included with the Mac OS X installer. You will notice a quick crash as the installer is erased from the hard drive. Since CD's cannot be written to, XPostFacto copies the relevant files from the CD, adding Ryan's kernel extensions and boot loader. The modified boot loader is the trick that allows "X" to load on Old World Mac's. I never did look into what happens to the installer, though if I remember correctly in earlier versions "X" would erase the boot loader and such, but somehow Ryan got around that with later versions. So yes indeed XPF uses the hard drive to boot from. By the way a way to initialize the disk during a clean install is to set another drive as the install to drive, which the installer will boot off of. This way when you erase the drive you won't erase the installer. I have done this on a few occasions before reinstalling. I don't mind having the extra installer files on my emergency 2.5GB drive. |

First, Mitch, that web site references another web site , and it can't be viewed with any broswer I have (IE, Camino, Mozilla & Safari). Now, for the 9600. I recently upgraded my 9600/233 with a Sonnet G4/800, and then installed X 10.2 on a Seagate 9GB Cheetah which is off an ATTO UL2D SCSI PCI card. Video card is the standard Twin Turbo. Everything works great. Here's the lesson I learned from this forum a long time ago. Format the drive to get the X install with 9.1 Disk Setup. Also make sure the Adaptec has the appropriate firmware for X, too. I know a lot of folks have had trouble with Adaptec SCSI cards. The ATTO cards have always worked for me. So, first try the 9.1 formatting. If that doesn't work, it's got to be the Adaptec firmware. BTW, My 9600 just rips right along with the Sonnet G4 800. Extends my system another few years. Cheers! --Dwight |

XPF does NOT boot off of the hard drive unless you use Apple System Restore to "recover" the CD to a drive/partition (can't be the one you want to install on). XPF fools OSX into thnking the computer is fine and can install on it then it has drivers that will add support and make other things work, that is basicly what it does. but this should not be an issue because the factory installed drive should work fine, that problem only arises on upgraded CDroms and maybe real old systems and on Clones (like the j700 that i have). what does verbose mode say when you turn it on? |

As you don't have motheboard video don't worry about the PCI video card. I have found that the 9600 is very forgiving of PCI video cards and the Voodoo 3 should work fine (unaccelerated of course). The suggestion of the CD Drive is good, but since XPostFacto boots off of the hard drive and not the CD this is not a major issue. Is the 2940 supported under OS X? I thought I read that it was not supported by either Apple or Adaptec under Mac OS X. An unsupported card can stall X and booting from a drive hooked to said bus is impossible. I must agree with "mitches" throttle suggestion, though since you stall at the boot process I don't see this as the issue. Finally, I would suggest removing all except the video PCI card. I would then make sure the CD Drive is attached to the internal Bus at ID: 3. I would then make sure that the HD is at ID: O (OS X has had issues with drive settings). Make sure the drive is formatted with the Drive Setup that came with 9.1 in HFS+ format. |

You must use a bootable CD drive, i.e. an old apple 300i,600i etc. works fine. Use the mother board video out. PCI video cards may or may not be supported. I've used this arrangement for 10, 10.1-5, 10.2-2.4 without fail. FYI: ATI 7000 is only supported up to 10.2.4. Voodoo3, who knows? First of all UNcheck all the Debug options in XPF. These will cause halts early in the boot sequence and mask the true problem. (See the XPF Help for more info). Is the Adaptec 2940 supported in OSX (especially for booting)? Have you got a drive connected to the internal SCSI bus that you can try out an OSX installation on? Set the Throttle to 24 and select Keyboard for the input device in case you get as far as an Open Firmware prompt and need to type something. You might want to de-interleave your memory (move the DIMM from B1 to A2) just in case this is an issue. For some people interleaving works for others it doesn't. Finally I'm not sure about the Voodoo3 and its support under OSX - someone else on the forum can advise on that one. |
