What is the partition max size to install OS X on? I have a single 60GB IDE connected through a Sonnet 133 IDE card. 8600 with a Sonnet G4/800 512MB RAM Thanks Joe |

I could not install to a partition over 8G on an 80G Seagate connected to a Sonnet ATA 133 (Promise based). I believe it to be something in the Apple installer script that does not allow installation to a partition over 8G in anything older than a beige and B/W G3. However it is very easy to clone/duplicate an OS X install to a partition over 8G after the fact. I am currently running OS 10.2.6 on the full 80G drive now. Ed |

No, it affects the Promise chip based Sonnet ATA cards also. I can install updates on my 80GB WD SE drive but I could not install OSX onto the 20GB partition I set aside for it. I had to reinstall my Acard ATA/133 card to install directly to that partition. |

I think that 8 gig limit only applied to the Beige G3 using it's on board controller. My B&W works fine with 120 gig partition. |

I wonder if you could create like a 2gig partition, install OSX onto that, and then Clone (Carbon Copy Cloner) onto to other (larger then 8gig) partition? Then you could either keep the original install as a spare or wipe it and make an OS 9 booter as I recommended below. I forget to mention putting XPF onto the 9 booter, but that goes without saying :~) Marty |

You can hook the drive up to an Acard card and install osx on a partition of virtually any size, then take that over 8 GB partition and hook it up to a sonnnet 100 or 133 card a boot fine and keep booting fine. I have OSX on a 22GB partition of a 60GB drive on a sonnet card. It works just fine. I just know that reinstalling is a pain if I ever need to do it. There is not a 8GB partition limit on our computers there is a fark-up with OSX's installer when used in conjunction with a sonnet IDE card. |

The Sonnet Tempo ATA/133 card uses the promise chip which properly reports ATA drives as IDE devices. Therefore, he is subject to the 8GB limit. |

Not true. It depends on how the drive is connected and which machine it's connected to... The 8gig limit was imposed to circumvent issues with certain early Apple IDE controllers most notably in the beige and B/W G3. Later models don't have this limit. Also some cards, like my ACARD Ahard 66MHz card pose as SCSI, thereby allowing me to have my OSX system on a big fat 56G partition (60G drive) It's a good idea in practice to have a little OS9 boot partition with some disk tools on it (DiskWarrior,Disk first Aid) just in case.... That would be 8GB. |
