How is the development on XPF 3 coming? My 2G internal hard drive has 152MB left on it (and the swap file is on a different drive too) and i could not even install itunes on it without moving the installer to my firewire drive (for some reason it needs like 150mb for the installation of iTunes). all of my programs are on my firewire drive and i still do not have any room on my drive so i am really needing XPF3 with Firewire support so i can use my 120GB firewire drive for booting. Thanks, Jim |

Sorry for such a late answer to your question. It's going better now. I've got the "guts" completed, and am now working on the UI. And then I'll do a little testing before I send out a beta. So, basically, I'm looking at a beta sometime in July. Of course, my credibility is somewhat limited at this point :-) I am really looking forward to getting the new codebase together so that I can make incremental changes more quickly again. That is more fun than these big rewrites. (In fact, I have basically discovered, as have no doubt many before me, that big rewrites aren't a really good idea). |

Cocktail 2.2 lets you drop a folder or volume on its window tab to create a symblink also... |

Check out my entries within this thread. If you don't feel comfortable with it, you may be better off waiting for XPF 3 or get a larger drive. |

If you've installed the developer tools, you can also place it on another disk and symlink /Developer. Then issue from a shell, the following command: sudo defaults write com.apple.installer FollowLinks -boolean true You may want to issue the command as your personal login, too. |

I need some more space... |

well i got about 200MB back after changing the home directory but i have found that it is still not enough, the security update said it needed 300+mb! to install when using the software update, but after i download it to may disc it works fine only requiring a few MB of room. This is still an irritant and i would not have to worry about space on a 5MB security update so is there a way to move the /library directory? it does not seem that that directory is not needed in the boot process, i would think that the /system/library is the one involved in the boot. Thanks, Jim |

I think that a solution is to mount a specified HD at a specifies Path. A UNIX friend told me that this is possible. So what if we mount the hard disk in the users folder instead of Volumes??? The only problem is that all the other disks CDs etc should be mounted the the known Volumes directory. And also the Volume mounted in the Users folder should not be mounted in the desktop. I do not know if this is possible but it would be a nice idea for partitioning a disk without the user know where are the partitions mounted. Just an idea |

Ok i got it, i guess you can't just copy the prefs folder over (even in the root) you have to copy all the files over at once. now everything is back....i hope Thanks alot, this will help a lot for the time being. Jim |

I think i remember when i enter a name with spaces, of a drive, i have to put Firewireosxhd or something like that. i will play around with it but some help would help. thanks! |

Look for "iphoto library manager" at macupdate. It lets you put your iphoto libraries (more than one allowed!) anywhere you want, without links! Says for OS 10.0.1 or something like that, but it works with 10.2.x and the latest iPhoto. |

Well, there are many UNIX books and I don't have one immediately off the top of my head. But then you can go ahead and do a search at Google for UNIX FAQ to get you started. What you should do is try to use symlinks to replace some of your larger files/folders within your home directory first. I do this with my iTunes folder and it hasn't given me any problems. You can try this for your iPhoto directory in Terminal or equivalent: cp -pR ~/Pictures /Volumes/MyDiskWithLotsOfDiskSpace mv ~/Pictures ~/Pictures.save ln -s /Volumes/MyDiskWithLotsOfDiskSpace/Pictures ~/ Launch iPhoto to see if it works. If it does you can safely delete ~/Pictures.save. |

i am definately picking up a book on Unix because there is some realy usefull stuff that i can't do right now, i know what MacADDICT publishes in its Unix section but that is like a tip a month and is usually useless to me. Any book recomendations? Thanks, Jim P.S. i am going to try to switch the home directory tommorow, and i may try to get the -s to work incase i can't get it to switch the home folder and because i sems like a usefull thing some day. |

You said alias are ignored. Have you tried symlinks? They're different, you know. To create symlinks, open up Terminal or equivalent and use the ln -s command. "man ln" for more info. |

you have to double return here for some reason. There is almost nothing in my home folder, i have to have my pics from iPhoto because for some reason yo can't change the folder it saves in, and it ignores the aliases i tryed to make, but that is about 150+MB so thay could help. but i have also not been able to get my Firewire HD to work right yet. If XpostFacto 3 came out i was going to overnight a new case for it to see if that helped (one of the nice OWC ones, not the cheap crap from e-bay like the one i have now). but i may have just found a solution for my problem, i had a firewire HD and CDRW and i had 2 FW ports so each on got its own, well after i plugged the HD into the CDRW and daisy chained them, it seems to have cured the problem so i will try moving the Home folder. Thanks for the responces, i was not actually expecting them. Thanks, Jim |

a) sorry that the instructions wound up so hard to read -- there were originally carriage returns after each line, I don't know why they didn't show up in the post. b) I missed your comment about already having all your applications on the drive -- apologies for being redundant. Ivan. |

Another option is to move your home folder to your firewire drive, and then you'll be made in the shade (provided your FW drive is always present at startup). You can still put applications in the Applications folder if you want (and I suggest this), but everything else (such as what's on the desktop, your Documents folder, iTunes music, etc) gets stored on the FireWire drive. And of course If you're still running out of room, you can put most applications on the FireWire drive -- in fact, you can do that right now, without even doing anything.. To move your home folder do the following. It sounds like a pain, but it actually doesn't take that long and once it's done, it's done. (Obviously, replace yourUserName with your actual short user name and "MyBigDrive" with the volume name of your FireWire drive.) - open NetInfo Manager (in /Applications/Utilities/) - choose "Authenticate" from the Security menu, and enter your pw - choose "Enable Root User" from Security menu, and give it a pw as prompted (I suggest the same as your admin pw) - Quit NetInfo Manager, log out, and log back in as "root" using the pw you just set - find /Users/yourUserName, and copy yourUserName to your FireWire drive - open NetInfo Manager - choose "Authenticate" from the Security menu, and enter your pw - click "Users" - click "yourUserName" in the next column - in the panel below, find the "Home" property, and double-click on the value (which should say "/Users/yourUserName" - edit the value so it says "/Volumes/MyBigDrive/yourUserName" - make sure you click somewhere else so that it sticks - choose "Save Changes" from the File Menu, and confirm that you want to Update This Copy - Quit NetInfo, and log out - log back in as your regular user - confirm that you are using the external drive by putting something in the desktop, and then navigating to the Desktop folder in the user folder on the FireWire drive to see if it's there - if all's ok, go ahead and delete /Users/yourUserName (you may need to log back in as root to do this) Let me know how it works, I think that's everything. If it's ok, I'll repost it under a more general subject header so more people might benefit from it. An alternate, command-line oriented method can be found at http:// www.bombich.com/mactips/homedir.html. Ivan. |

If you don't need more the 1 language... delocalizer is a cool utility that removes resources. On my systems, when I got rid of everything other then english it saved 300M+ Marty |
