USB 2.0 PCI Card - What will work.... |

I own a PowerMac 9600/300 and find it hard to locate a USB 2.0 PCI card that will work properly. I tried IO-Gear twice, (one card worked under X only, neither in classic). Keyspan USB 2.0 Firewire, this card is supported, according to their website to run on the 9600, but under classic 1.1 is not fully operable, though does not power up the hub, it does operate my Epson C60 Printer that is on that bus, very strange. I would like to run an external CDR and Hard drive at lower cost than SCSI is my goal. Any help would be appreciated... PS- Anyone else excited about Powerlogix's new 800mhz 512k G3 that is scheduled to be out in a few weeks... Yeah whooooooooo!!! |

>Can anybody tell me (looking at this page specifications: http://www.sunix.com.tw/ >smio/product/combo/1102.htm) if this card could work in my 7300? I have a >radeon 7000 in slot b1 and an atto card in slot b3 (so only b2 is available). I have an PM7600 with an atto card and a radeon 7000 and am using an IOGear GUF220 card (http://www.iogear.com/products/product.php?Item=GUF220). I have not had any problems with it. It uses the Orange Micro Drivers for the USB2 portion and the Firewire works natively in OSX. In OS 9 you have to use OS9 Helper to enable FireWire support but the USB 1.1. portion works without additional drivers. I have not had any problems with it. There was also another comment about a FireWire card with the Via chipset not likely to work in the Mac. I have an Inland 2 port FireWire card that is based on a Via chipset that works fine in both OSX and OS 9. The USB2 cards that use the Via chipset are definetly not supported, but I think the FireWire ones should be fine. Good Luck! |

Hi Gurus, I am sure u have seen my previous posts, now here is the details, kinda long, so pls bare with me: It all began when my old Evergreen FW/Usb card started giving me problems printing on my new Epson (my first USB printer). It would stop printing on hi res half way through, saying no more data or something, same message under OS 9.2 and 10.2.6. Then I realized I was having problems capturing video, it would freeze up my system as soon as i started capturing from my DV cam. SO I figured that my Evergreen FW/USB card was done and I needed to change it. So I got this FW card that came with a scanner at my work (its suppose to be for a PC), it worked fine for my capturing. Then I tried all different USB cards, the cheap generic USB 2.0 etc. etc. They worked fine under 10.2.6, but not under 9.2. finally yesterday I got a Macally FW/ USB 2.0 card. Great card even with internal connections and 4pin power connectors. The USB part worked woked fine under 9.2 and 10.2.6 after installing the extensions. Great so far...THEN I tried the FW part......SHUCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! same problem capturing crashes. So the Macally card workes fine with USB but not with FW. My conclusion USB/ FW combo cards don't work in my machine, separately they are ok. As much as I hate to I will return the Macally card, keep the no name brand FW card (made for PCs) and decide on the USB card, actually I am thinking about getting a USB 1.1 card since I will probably never use USB 2.0 devices. I still have a no name brand cheap USB 2.0 card that I am temporarily using under 10.2.6, but it doesn't work under 9.2. I saw in this forum about downloading USB 1.5.5f1 from the USB DD, which I did but I have no idea how to install it, I read it but i still didn't get it. Can Anyone help me installing it, cause this may activate this generic USB 2.0 card, then I won't have to get anymore USB cards. Thanks for ur time. My specs: PTP pro w/ Sonnet G4 800 Mhz/ 800 Mb ram My current PCI config: Slot 1: Empty Slot 2:ADaptec 29160 card Slot3: Generic USB 2.0 card Slot4: Generic FW card Slot5: Creative Sounblaster Live Slot 6: ATi Radeon Mac edition Thanks for ur help. Maurizio - I downloaded the drivers that are linked on the page you mentioned. It seems like there are USB2 drivers for OSX in the download. That's not too surprising since the card uses a common NEC chip for the USB2 interface. However, the Firewire ports are driven by a VIA chip which I doubt will be supported under OSX. So if you want USB2 and Firewire your better off looking at cards from Sonnet or Adaptec. |

gabb, Yes, the USB portion will work. USB 1.5.5f1 from the USB DDK will allow it full functionality, even in 9.2.2. - Chibi Delennâ„¢ |

Just a reminder on USB 2.0 cards - none will work at 2.0 speeds in OS 9 or Classic. Don't even bother trying. That said, anything from Keyspan, MacAlly, and Ratoc should work. The Tempo Trio and any other Sonnet USB 2.0 card should work as well. I know for a fact that they do work in OS 9 with the USB 1.5.5f1 dev kit extensions, as this is what I use. I have no firewire devices to test, so I can't say for sure whether or not that is working, but hopefully it is, as I intend to get a firewire TVR solution sometime in the near future (job permitting). - Chibi Delennâ„¢ And yes, the formatting in this forum SUCKS A GOAT'S NUTS. I'm sorry, but having to use a bloody -br- tag every damned time I want a carriage return is not my idea of intuitive or user friendly. Bleah. |

Everything seemed nice and dandy when I was using Newer Tech card (g4 400 Mhz). Hell broke lose as soon I put in a Sonnet crescendo G4 800 card. I do see performance boost but too many other problems. I am never buying another sonnet product. gabby |

I have an old Evergreen tech FW/USB combo card that has given me problems (during printing, capturing video etc. So i figured i should change the card. There is also a power point on the card that allows u to connect power to the card, and I did to see if it helps. What I have noticed is that my wacom is more responsive after the card was externally powered. But sometimes after a while the the comp loses contact with the Wacom tablet. I have two new USB 2.0 cards that don't work under 9.2, but fine under 10.X I am going to get a FW/ USB combo card soon. From this forum I have learned that Ratoc and Keyspan cards work. The Keyspan card is cheaper but it cannot be externally powered, while the Ratoc card can be. Since I have seen speed boost on these cards with external power I would prefer a card that can be externally powered. Do u guys know anything about the Firewiredepot.com or firewiredirect.com combo (kinda expensive but has everything) cards? i am just worried if the USB part of the card will be compatible in my machine. do u think externally powered cards actually perform better? any suggestions? |

Gurus, I tried everything, downloaded developer's kit, apple's USB adater stuff, nothing works. Both USB 2.0 card just isn't recognized under 9.X. One of my cards has a an"ALI" chip and the other "NEC" chip. The one with the "ALI" chip says nothing about Macs, its a Windows card, the other one with the "NEC" chip does say Mac 8.6 and above. But none works, only under 10.2.6. My last resolution getting that Ratoc or Keyspan card. I think i like the Keyspan one since it specifies Machines not tjust OS, like Power Mac 9500 and up. Since I have a PTP, I should be ok. Pwrmactx, Does this card(Keyspan) have an internal power supply point so i can power it up internally? Gabby |

I have found that Keyspan USB 2.0 Firewire Combo Card WORKS GREAT!!! It carries USB 1.1 under classic, but if you are using a hub it needs to be powered, since there are so many ports on the card. I haven't tested USB 2.0 devices, since I presently do not own any yet, but I have appied the Keyspan USB 2.0 Update with no issues so far and very reliable... Thank you for all your help... Jim PS- The Card has a NEC Chipset and system requirements include Powermac 7300- 9600 |

Oh well it must have recognised something about my HTML since it made everything I typed invisible. Sorry, I've commented before about the crappy pseudo-HTML interpreter on this forum. I'm not going to waste any more time trying to guess what it will do next. Larry et al - just ditch it and install a decent forum. |

Pls someone - how to you wrap a url into UUB or something so it looks and acts like a real link? Anyway to edit my post, too. I have to vote for either a new BBS or junk this one. I know it isn't easy, MacGurus has been refining their new bbs for weeks - but it has excellent search capability, editing and more. |

You can find a direct link if you look/search MacIntouch for "USB Report" or USB 1.5.5f1. don't know why you'd search the Apple Discussion area, that's the last place - but ftp.apple.com maybe. |

I got my Ratoc card form Macgurus.com but they are no longer in the retail business for the time being. You can buy directly from Ratoc at their Yahoo store. I don't remember the URL though. If you do a search on the web you will find Ratoc. From there you will find a link to their store. |
