Upgrading 7600 with G3 Processor to OS X |

Previously I wrote about the CD hanging the upgrade and several of you graciously responded. I have subsequently added a Sonnet ATA133 PCI card and connected a Maxtor 80GB HD and an EPO atapi 56X CD ROM reader to that card. I have removed all other SCSI devices except a Quantum 4GB Internal which houses OS 9.1. I have removed all memory cards except one 128MB card. I have disconnected USB devices from the back as well as the Ethernet cable and an external SCSI drive which I no longer need anyway. I have partitioned the Maxtor so that the first partition is 7.98GB and designated it for OS X. I have failed to install using Sonnet's PCI install 1.2.6. The boot into the install disk does not light up the monitor and the CD is quiet for half an hour. I have also failed with Xpostfacto 2.2.5. However, I put Xpostfacto into verbose mode and got the following after a long string of stuff which appeared to be OK. The boot from the install disk lights up the monitor with a big apple and then the verbose part happens Dependency com.apple.kernel of oldworld.support.Patched IOSCSICDDrive is not compatible or is unavailable Can't get dependencies for kernel extension oldworld.support.Patched IOSCSICDDrive IO Catalogue: oldworld.support.Patched IOSCSICDDrive cannot be loaded Still waiting for root device Does this mean that $200 dollars later, I still have a CD ROM reader problem? Help! |

I was able to install 10.2 in a 7600 with no original Apple drives of any kind! CD-Sony CD-ROM CDU-415 Hard Drives: TANDEM 4265-1 formatted with Intech Hard Disk Speed Tools SEAGATE ST336918N formatted with Apple's Drive Setup. All are on the internal bus. SCSI termination was my biggest obstacle, as was correctly setting up XPostFacto. |

I have been running OS 10.2.6 for a couple of weeks now and got there as follows. Since my EPO CD ROM would not boot, I simply did a disk copy of the install disk to my ATA Maxtor. Then I used Apple Software Restore to copy the Maxtor copy of the install disk to a remote SCSI drive which was bootable. Then I treated the remote SCSI as though it were a CD ROM and all installs went well. First I did 10.0. Then I repeated the process with the 10.1.disk. Then I used the download process to get to 10.1.5 . Nest I used the orginal process to install 10.2 as an upgrade. From that point I was able to use the download process to get through 10.2.5 and then 10.2.6 . The use of Disk copy and Apple System Retore basically is a cloning process applied to a CD. The key is that you cannot use Apple System Retore to copy something to the same drive. The final destination has to be bootable and it will be erased first. Finally, it must be noted that this process did NOT work with Sonnet's package. It was Xpostfacto which did the job. |

Try using Carbon Copy Cloner (you can get it from Versiontracker.com) to clone the CD onto a hard disk partition. Normal copying won't deal correctly with the boot blocks so won't work. |

I have checked the integrity of the Jaguar disks on my other G3. I was able to successfully install from them. |

It turns out that the drive which original was declared to be obsolete was an internal SCSI Apple Sony 4X CD reader. I have now used disk copy (is this the same as cloning? to load both Jaguar disks on to the Maxtor ATA drive and on to the internal SCSI drive and attempted to use both Sonnet and x post facto. In all cases Sonnet brings up the big apple and then dies with a band of vertical bars across the apple. In both cases x post facto denies that the Mac OS X disk image is bootable. Now I must determine exactly what cloning means. |

Raymond, The following messages can be safely ignored : "Dependency com.apple.kernel of oldworld.support.PatchedIOSCSICDDrive is not compatible or is unavailable" "Can't get dependencies for kernel extension oldworld.support.PatchedIOSCSICDDrive" "IO Catalogue: oldworld.support.PatchedIOSCSICDDrive cannot be loaded" They relate to an XPF extension which does not, and is not meant to load under 10.1 or 10.2. Hopefully Ryan will modify XPF to not install the offending extension in a future release. If you want to get rid of the messages then delete the file /System/Library/Extensions/PatchedIOSCSICDDrive.kext The final message "Still waiting for root device" does suggest that the system cannot access the alternative CD device you have installed. So I agree with the other two posters about finding an Apple original SCSI drive. Also, are you sure of the integrity of the CD disk itself. Try checking it on another system if possible. |

I must agree with egonzales21, you need to find an Apple SCSI CD-ROM drive. A compatible Sony or Mitsumi drive may work, but I would stick with an Apple SCSI drive. Then again cloning the Installer CD to a hard drive would be better and faster install option. |

You are still having CD ROM reader problems. Installs go much easier when one uses essentially the same SCSI CD ROM drive that came with the machine or at least another Apple ROM CD drive. Install this on your internal SCSI chain. I believe others have described possibly copying the Apple install CD to a partition on a SCSI Drive but do not know the details. Best bet is to find an original Apple ROM CD drive of at least 4X or 8X. Ed |
